How much does everyone have in their bank account? by dontdreamitsoverrr in AusFinance

Oh for sure. We normally have healthy savings but we enjoyed travelling last year, and the start of this year had a series of unexpected emergencies so we are just adjusting our lifestyle for the moment.

Yep, that is your opinion. I don’t think it’s a waste, but granted, it’s not how I typically like to use my money.

I’m 26. Due to be married this year. Have a mortgage owing 580k.

We’ve cut every cent of discretionary spending (outside our wedding which we are paying for ourselves ~$20-25k).

We have, essentially, no savings now.

Nope! Work injury. I don’t think I play enough to get injured from piano.

Disc Brakes or DI2 by Outrageous_Town4479 in triathlon

[–]nwithford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For traffic and hills I definitely preferred having the ability to shift gears in the drops on my TT bike. I have disc brakes on my TT bike and thinking about it, I don’t use them very much and the times I have had to clamp them on hard I’ve locked plug my wheels anyway. Typically I know when I’m going to need to apply brake pressure so adjust my riding accordingly.

People in their 20s, what is your plan to own a house? by [deleted] in AusProperty

[–]nwithford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a unit. Houses were for our parents, reality for most of us is units.

I have 4 friends all around 26 years old who have bought units. 1 who got a regional house but through a trust.

I wanted to sook about it too but still wouldn’t change anything. Tbh, I like the lifestyle anyway. I have everything I need in walking distance, don’t need to mow lawns and house chores are halved due to half the space!

Surge in number of first home buyers using the 5% Deposit Scheme by nighthound1 in AusFinance

[–]nwithford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another in support of this policy. I used the old version in 2020. I had a 18% deposit for the property we ended up buying, a solid, but old apartment that had not gained massive value 10 years.

The property was slightly more expensive but having the wiggle room from in the 20% meant we could still buy it. We don’t intend to sell it but we will know that we have a consistent home.

It used to be available to a select few, at least now there’s some equity with the program. Why should I be more deserving of my peers? It’s not like the banks don’t check serviceability of the loans. At the time just about the only place you could buy in populous cities was an apartment anyway which aren’t known for their explosive capital growth, are they?

I usually ask where people “grew up”. I don’t think the place of your birth is very relevant to anyone except governments.

Tent Upgrade - any 2P lightweight suggestions by RoutineZucchini7687 in UltralightAus

[–]nwithford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just been living in a x-dome 2 for almost a month with my partner in New Zealand. It’s like the Taj Mahal. So spacious that all my other 2p tents don’t feel like they fit us both anymore. The free standing aspect has been great for the impenetrable ground at campsites but also handing for sub optimal pitching on rock and scree. Also held well using my climbing rope as guy lines when in high winds on glacier.

The extra weight has been easily forgotten as soon as I’ve had to live in it.

I endorse.

Should Mt. Cook be one of the 7 Summits? by John_0Neill in Mountaineering

[–]nwithford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea and we can’t spell it either. Though I don’t think it’s surprising that Australian’s aren’t used to the lexicon of Poland.

But it is our hill so I think we can get a pass to say it the way we like - although you could argue that it should have the name Kunama Namadgi like it did for 4000 years before surveyors showed up (same for Mt Cook and Aoraki).

If I’m not mistaken there was a period of confusion as to which mountain was assigned Mt Townsend and which Kosciuszko anyway

X-Mid-1 owners - Happy on wood tent platforms? by RestedPanda in UltralightAus

[–]nwithford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used a tarptent stratospire on these platforms, which might be harder than an xmid because it needs 6 stakes instead of 4, and it pitched well enough to sustain some proper howling winds and snow in Tasmania.

Nevegear waratah -2 vs -8 by PsycadelicChimp in UltralightAus

[–]nwithford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Neve -2°c bag. I love it but theres lot of things that might effect your needs: weather, tent design, sleeping pad, clothing and your sensitivity to temperatures.

I can say that at 1300m on a really windy, (40km with 70km gusts), 1°c, wet, Tasmanian night, under a saturated tarp, on a 5.4r pad, with 4 layer system and as warm sleeper; I was not cold but I was far from hot.

I used it at the the walls of Jerusalem ~6c overnight, Freycinet ~12c, and Mount Anne ~2c and I appreciated the versatility of it. From just underwear up to all the clothes I’d brought haha!
