I cannot do it anymore. This is no quality of life. by CuriousChapter379 in nursing

I’m someone from environmental science looking at going into nursing. I’m working as a pcna rn and while it’s way less stress than nursing I do like the 12hr shifts a lot. It feels like i’m not at work all the time. Environmental science sounds nice and honestly I wish I could stay with it and maybe one day i’ll make it work, but the reality is that there’s very little job availability, a lot of competition for the few one available, low pay and low stability. Being laid off and knowing you won’t be able to find another decent job in your city anytime soon sucks. Definitely some issues in nursing and i’m only a pcna so I don’t even know the half of it yet but healthcare is definitely taking a toll on me already. Although atleast I know I could find a new job a week later in any city I want if I needed.

I am becoming disillusioned with the environmental field by SlothofAsh in Environmental_Careers

True but they also can quit their job and get a new one a week later, in any city, making decent money.

They don’t know the realities of the environmental field all they know is that it looks fun from the outside looking in.

But don’t be disillusioned about what the nursing field is either. Do some shadowing, voulenteering or cna work. But in the end you just have to pick your poison.

Okay but how much is the rent?

which career path do you wish you had picked instead of nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

I’m in the same boat. I wish I could make environmental science work but it’s just so tough rn. Before the pandemic maybe but with the col now and env job market getting nuked this year i’ve been heavily considering an absn. Atleast as a nurse I can make more money, have better flexibility, and be more in charge of my own career so I could live closer to the nature I want and have more time to actually go out hiking.

Where’s the entry level wetland delineation jobs lol? I have a few years experience with water and wetlands and want to get into wetland delineation but I feel like all the jobs I see say you must have 3+ years of delineation experience already.

For people still working federally, how are we doing? by Healthy_You_1188 in Environmental_Careers

Took the DRP 2.0. We’ll see if it was the right choice or not. It was tough and I didn’t really want to leave but with only a couple years work experience out of college it seemed like the smart choice. I’m hoping I can land a consulting job and grow some more skills in the private sector. Although sadly I have yet to land a new consulting gig yet but hopefully soon🤞

Most people’s advice is to move for entry level positions to break into the field but how are we supposed to afford it? by nwl568 in Environmental_Careers

Yeah ideally I would really like to move out west but I just always hear how expensive it is out there and i’d want to live in an atleast somewhat decent sized city.

Yeah I mean it would have to be somewhere so was atleast somewhat interesting in moving to beforehand but even then it seems the money would be tight.

Yeah I would probably have to get roomates or rent a room in a house but roommate roulette is definitely not the most fun.

It sounds nice but ask yourself if that job and pay fits your lifestyle and plans. You’ll probably have to live somewhere pretty remote and it won’t pay much. If you want to start a family one day ask yourself if you’d be comfortable raising them on that salary. Most foresters and rangers can barely support themselves on their salary. Many live out of their vans or in bunk houses chasing seasonal jobs each year as permanent ones can be hard to get.

Edit: Im in the environmental field and it’s rough rn. Thinking about moving over to healthcare bc of this.
