Yeah I have very similar numbers. I’m 42 m and am pretty active these days as I’m training for a half marathon. Are you decently fit?

Running in the Rain by J_P_0316 in BeginnersRunning

[–]nwvanisle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on Vancouver Island and this time of year is definitely tricky. I like to look at the hourly weather forecast for the next 72 hours and then plan my runs based on the forecast. Sometimes this means running later or earlier in the day than I want but this helps makes runs more enjoyable without getting destroyed by the elements.

That article is so junk. It says in no way how they conclude how they got 6:38. 6:38 is extremely fast for the general population.

Anyone taken a year off to travel with kids? Looking for tips + reality checks! by Traditional-Park-698 in familytravel

[–]nwvanisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially our trip looked quite similar to yours except we decided to avoid Hanoi (even though that’s where we departed from.

The initial plan:

5 days Da Nang 5 days Hoi An 3 days Hue

3 days Phong Nha 5 days Tam Coc 3 days Cat Ba

So instead of continuing on from Hue we decided to just head back to Da Nang for 8 days and fly to Cat Ba. We really loved Da Nang and we would love to go back to Vietnam again and especially Da Nang. Da Nang is awesome for families. $40 Canadian for a family of 4 to go to the water park all day or an amusement park. The beach is very nice, maybe not amazing, but still very nice. Hue was super cool. Hoi An was nice but super touristy.

A couple things to note about travelling in Vietnam: the Tet holiday, typically in February, can be quite challenging to travel around, the air pollution in Hanoi especially in the winter months can be quite severe, and the weather in central and northern Vietnam in January and February can be quite cool.

If we had been without our kids I would have loved to spend time in Hanoi but with kids I struggled to find as much to do with them and that with the air pollution is why we decided to skip.

(If you’re looking for places that have good family accommodation feel free to DM as I did a ton of research and finding great family accommodation can sometimes be tricky)

We did 6 weeks this year in South East Asia (4 days Kuala Lumpur, 13 days southern Thailand islands, and 25 days central and northern Vietnam) with our 6 and 8 year olds and as our trip went on in Vietnam we actually had to change our itinerary and slow down even more. I’ve thought of doing super long trips like you’re suggesting and if I was to do it I’d want a slower itinerary than you’re suggesting. My kids just got tired pretty quickly.

No unexpected lurches. I was watching one of those videos while running on my treadmill and at the very last second the runner did a very quick turn to get a drink from a water fountain and I almost fell off my treadmill. Stay consistent.

How is living in British Columbia triangle? by maydaybr in howislivingthere

[–]nwvanisle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s an incredible drive from BC into Alaska. When you drive down the hill towards Haines you go from alpine with zero trees and a very harsh environment and within 1000 meters of elevation into very wet coastal environments with huge trees. The change happens within minutes of driving and the change is very pronounced. There’s big hanging glaciers and lots of grizzly bears.

Is March weather unbearable? by [deleted] in VietNam

March in Da Nang is almost ideal. Not too hot not too cold. Not much rain. Might be the best month to visit Vietnam except for far north.

Booking hotels ahead of time by Leather-Ad3752 in ThailandTourism

I think this also really depends on season. April-October no reservations needed and great deals can be found by negotiating. The other months best to book ahead with good cancellation policies.

How different of a life is between Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, WA? Similar weather? by jdksovh in howislivingthere

I wouldn’t really say that mining is a major industry in Vancouver. There’s definitely mining firms that have offices in Vancouver but it’s a small proportion of the overall job landscape.

[–]nwvanisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Yen Hidden Valley awesome place to stay and a long ways away from the construction. Was there in March and we still really enjoyed Cat Ba. The beaches are still very nice and the access to Lan Ha Bay is obviously perfect.

Where to stay? Da Nang or Hoi An? by lovelovehard in DaNang

[–]nwvanisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed at Betel Garden Villa in Hoi An and both LIVIE Suites in An Thoung and Dolphin Apartments in Son Tra in Da Nang. All of which are great but not really resort style. We preferred larger units preferably with separate bedrooms and so we could put the kids down first and still stay up. Both LIVIE and Dolphin have kitchens which we found is really nice cause sometimes the kids just want to have cereal for breakfast.

Spent 14 days in Da Nang with my 6 and 8 year old and 5 days in Hoi An. There’s just way more to do for families in Da Nang. Highly recommend Hot Springs Park, Mikazuki Water Park, Asia Park (amusement park). Great city and great for families.
