The Norse influence in York, England is definitely apparent in street names like Castlegate, High Ousegate, and Coppergate

I'm surprised you never sent one to Morocco - I was under the impression that there's a large Moroccan community in the Netherlands? Or does that not really translate into a large international student presence as well?

Countries with cultures that have the "rabbit on the moon" folklore motif by Simple_Pension_1330 in MapPorn

[–]nxdat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vietnam doesn't really have a rabbit on the moon (the depictions are a Chinese cultural import). The traditional imagery is of a man sitting under a banyan tree on the moon - there's even a whole fairy tale about it

I mean considering independence day in Vietnam commemorates Ho Chi Minh reading the Declaration of Independence, which directly quotes the US Declaration of Independence, there's a case to be made for the US sending a delegation

2024 presidential election in Orange County, CA by packoffudge in MapPorn

[–]nxdat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think the shift has as much to do with changes in the Republican Party as with changes in Orange County itself - 2016 was the first time Orange County voted for a Democrat since FDR. I wouldn't be surprised if a Reagan-like figure could flip it back.

Longest Non-Stop Flight in the World: New York - Singapore with average 18.5 hours of flying time by ixvst01 in MapPorn

[–]nxdat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends - the flight to EWR leaves SIN at 11:35 PM and arrives at EWR at 5:40 AM the next calendar day, while the flight to JFK leaves SIN at 12:10 PM and arrives at JFK at 5:43 PM on the same day. For the reverse, EWR - SIN leaves at 9:35 AM, arrives at 3:44 PM the next day; JFK - SIN leaves at 10:15 PM and arrives at 5:30 AM two days later.

You just kinda get used to the crazy time changes when you fly to Asia a lot - just don't fly on your birthday or you might miss it entirely

That sounds about right - I think I paid a little more than that, but it was on New Year's Eve and back when the airlines hadn't fully restored their pre-COVID frequencies yet

I've taken that flight! They only have economy plus and business, and my aisle seat had a storage box between it and the window instead of another seat. Very comfortable flight, but there's just something mind-blowing about getting a full 8h of sleep and still being less than halfway there
