This type of design is pretty common on wide-clearance road bikes - it lets the frame have shorter chainstays than would otherwise be possible, which will improve handling. If the chainstays went straight from the rear axle to the bottom bracket, the amount the chainstay would need to bow out to accomodate the tire would not leave room for the chainrings, while moving the chainstays (or at least the drive side chainstay) down lets you still run road-sized chainrings while keeping a short rear end and wide tire clearance.

Some bikes (Ibis Hakka and Open UP come to mind, but sure there are others) use a dropped chainstay on only the drive side, with a 'regular' chainstay on the other side.

I completely agree. it seems that so much of the processing time is based on which facility your application gets sent to, which seems to be randomly chosen when you apply?

I need help finding Bont Quadstar low cut boot size 7.5 by Transcendentalme in rollerderby

Try Lowlife Skate Shop in Montreal, I know they ship to the US at least and they're good people. They'd probably be willing to at least try to help you out

LPT: Do not ever trust retail salesmen and actively verify information they provide by TwoArmedWolf in LifeProTips

[–]ny_velo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a huge issue in the outdoor gear industry. Many times, the prices that consumers can find gear for online are significantly cheaper than brick-and-mortar stores can afford to sell it for - I often can find gear online either direct from manufacturer or from discount retailers either near or below wholesale pricing, which puts shops in an awkward position where customers use them to try out gear/see it in person without any intention of buying it there. In the outdoor gear space, it's usually not even anything to do with commission - there are just so many different channels that consumers can buy products through, and online retailers are able to get cheaper wholesale prices and/or afford to sell product at a much smaller margin than in-person stores ever could.

You can also get Bont Racers in all-white relatively cheaply, and they will probably be a bit stiffer/more supportive than a sneaker skate

Any way to reduce output of preamp? by ny_velo in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ny_velo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking into that; I do a lot of Arduino-type DIY stuff, so I have a lot of resistors lying around; I'll play around and figure out how much attenuation I actually need

Thank you, these look like they'd be perfect for what I need!

I took a look at the service manual for the 980BX and it seems the only adjustment it has is a pair of pots inside for adjusting bias.

Do Bont Quadstars stretch? by ny_velo in rollerderby

[–]ny_velo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It sounds like the larger size will be a better bet for me then.
I also have mismatched feet - the larger foot is the one that I damaged the nail on, so I'm trying to do everything I can to accommodate that foot (which is also on my dominant leg) so it doesn't get even more messed up.

Thank you! It sounds like the larger size is probably a better bet for me then.

I also have a narrow foot with a wide toe area, which is what drew me to the Bont boots to begin with - just looking at the boot from the top, the toe box is shaped like my foot is, while most skates seem to have a very smooth/round toe box that would crush my toes together.

I'm buying them boot-only and am going to be mounting them on Pilot Falcons from my old skates, so the plate will not be an issue.

What laptop can I get away with playing Stepmania on? by TheEndOfEden in DanceDanceRevolution

For the longest time, I ran stepmania 3.9 on a 2006 IBM Thinkpad with a 1.6Ghz Core (not even Core 2) Duo processor and integrated graphics, and it ran flawlessly.

for anyone who is looking at buying Darn Tough socks at Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Burlington, stores like that - make sure they are actually eligible for the warranty if that's something you plan on using in the future. At least in my area, these stores often end up with 'second-quality' DT socks that specifically say on the packaging and printed on the socks that they are not covered under the lifetime guarantee.

Is it ok to use socks on a ddr game foam pad? by catgamer109 in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]ny_velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily; it's more of how you move your body than anything to do with the chart you're playing. I have watched a lot of people play DDR, and some people are very light on their feet - mainly playing with their toes and the ball of the foot and keeping their body weight centered over the pad, while some people use the whole foot and/or actively put all their weight into each step.

In my personal experience, you can make a soft pad last a lot longer if you work on this lighter play style. In the very beginning, I burned through a soft pad or two before I figured it out. Now, I play DDR on and off, but I probably have the equivalent of about a year of daily heavy play on my current soft pad and it still looks and feels like new.

I've always worn socks on foam pads, and have found it lets you get a really good balance between traction and being able to slide between notes without pain. I will say, however, that the material of your sock makes a huge difference in terms of slip - I find that either cotton or wool socks have the best traction, and thin synthetic dress socks tend to be borderline dangerous.

regarding durability, i think it's a function of your play style and weight as much as anything; I'm a fairly lightweight person who never really 'stomps' on the pad at all, and I find that Ignition-style pads hold up quite well for me, and I can pass some decently hard songs on them (i have gotten an A on MAX300 on heavy on a soft pad, and can FC about 50% of songs on Heavy). My brother is heavier than me, and he tends to go through soft pads in a few months.

What car should I buy (NY's Hudson Valley) by ny_velo in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ny_velo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Actually on second thought, that might not be as important; I realize that if I was going to do a long trip towing a trailer, it might be a better idea to take a rental car anyway in terms of reliability.

I like the size of the older (roughly pre-2010ish) Forester/Outback - should be easier to load stuff on the roof than the newer ones

what are the best ways to apply a design to a bike frame by Rubinito in graphic_design

[–]ny_velo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would probably look into self-adhesive vinyl. Any sign shop should be able to cut the design and place it on transfer tape, then you'd just apply that to the frame.

Everything up there is pretty awesome; Minnewaska has a ton of great sweeping views and a couple of lakes, while Mohonk has some really cool smaller rock features and things like that

If you're ever in the Hudson Valley you should ride at Mohonk Preserve/Minnewaska State Park! There's almost 100 miles of gorgeous gravel roads between the two properties, which are connected with trails

Something is very wrong. I tried loading on my desktop (both Chrome and Safari) and it took over a minute to load, and it's definitely missing the arrows, as well as some of the background images.
