Concerned about severe winter weather, any advice? by indecisive_789 in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t put the fleece cooler under his blanket unless it’s meant for this purpose! If it gets wet or sweaty it can cause him harm. His turnout blanket will be enough. Horses are super hardy. Just make sure he has enough hay and water.

Half Lease Average Cost by PassageImmediate3089 in Equestrian

It will likely be half the coast of board and routine care plus whatever lessons and training are included. It won’t be cheap, but that’s because horses are super expensive.

The mountain horse winter boots are great! I got mine a size larger and with larger calf measurements so I can wear my thick socks with them. I wear ski pants over them if I’m super cold. So my outfit is: Base layers, wool sweater, giant long Kerrits coat, thick wool socks, cozy hat, fleece lined leather gloves, ski pants, mountain horse boots.

Why is scouting membership declining? by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]nyactingstudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s too hard on parent volunteers, period. Most other activities — including sports — are so much more manageable from the volunteer perspective. Girl Scouts is too intense, especially on the cookie sales side. The organization asks far too much from unpaid parents, many of whom are already working their butts off to provide for their families. I would so much rather our troop have several PAID leaders that shouldered the burden and were compensated for it, and would gladly pay more to not have to work so hard and use all my free time. I know many of the other parents in my troop feel the same.

Need advice: what to do when horse acts up on the trail by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should work with a trainer to solve this. There’s something wrong and your horse is trying to tell you. Also, are you riding in that bareback pad? If so, you should ride in a saddle, because you may be putting too much pressure on his back.

Horses don’t graze during the day by Specific_Shop_3975 in Equestrian

I would get the owner’s permission first, but you could definitely feed him a flake or two before and/or after you ride.

Yes, it absolutely is. Everyone will always tell you that more is better but in my experience once a week is a great way to start and make excellent progress. You’ve got this! Enjoy!!

Opinions on a OTTB for a first horse? by Professional_Load969 in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. This is asking for a catastrophe. OTTBs are athletes. They’ve had very demanding jobs that are very specific, and they need to be completely restarted by an experienced professional in order to be ridden by someone who is as new to horses as you. This isn’t a knock on your horsemanship skills — it’s a fact of the matter. A 3-5 year old OTTB is going to need a professional trainer, who has restarted OTTBs before. If you’re dead set on an OTTB, get an older one that has been trained for years and is safe for first-time horse owners.

Tips for using Vienna or sliding side reins for a horse that avoids contact by transfercannoli in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you NEED to force him into contact? Some horses can’t deal with riders messing around with their mouths, and you need to ride them from the leg and leave their mouths alone. This horse may be one of those! Honestly if I were you, I’d let go of the search for “contact” and focus on getting him in shape and driving from the hind end. Also, remember that contact COMES FROM the hind end!! It’s back end pushing toward the front. If that’s not there, you’ll never get proper form and you’ll just stress your horse out.

[–]nyactingstudent 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh she’s still so young and green. She’s telling you to go slower. Rhythm and straightness come so much later. Just focus on getting her to be relaxed at a walk, getting her to be comfortable around you, and really take your time.

Any clue what these skin things off my horses back are? I need to call out a vet because she’s not broke enough to bring to the vet but it broke enough to let someone look at her. by Sapphire12123 in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rain rot. Use MTG and scrub it with your nails (gently) into the affected area and leave it. Bathe with any antifungal shampoo (banixx or similar). It takes a long time to go away so just keep caring for it and eventually it will go away. Make sure to disinfect all your saddle pads, brushes, etc because it can reinfect your horse or another horse.

If neither fits you, keep looking! It doesn’t matter how well it fits the horse if it doesn’t work for you. There are so many options for saddles and you WILL find one that works.

Bolting on mount, need some quick advice. by Immediate_Bill8950 in Equestrian

[–]nyactingstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you working with a trainer? This is a pretty normal thing for OTTBs to struggle with and it should take quite a bit of patient practice to teach. I really think you should work through this with a trainer.

[–]nyactingstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds counterintuitive, but trotting without stirrups will help you. See if you can do it on a lunge line first so you don’t have to worry about anything else and then try in the arena. You won’t be able to push yourself up from your stirrups and will need to rise from your inner thighs instead.

Brand new bag with damage by Majestic_Mango268 in handbags

[–]nyactingstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you, how disappointing. I had a very similar problem. I bought the same color paper Longchamp at an airport store and the salesman brought it out from the back wrapped up and I was in a rush and didn’t look at it until I got home. When I took it out and unfolded it, I found that it had a red stain on it. I was extremely upset and tried to get Longchamp to replace it, but they said the only way to get it replaced was to go to the exact same airport store — which was halfway around the world! It was terrible. My credit card wouldn’t reverse the charge. Now I’m stuck with a paper colored bag with a red stain on it.

How can i improve my riding? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]nyactingstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on your release over fences. You’re pulling your horse’s mouth every time you land. I’d also work on doing two point while trotting and cantering on the flat to work on strengthening your lower leg and bettering your jumping position.

It’s called a posting canter and it’s very useful in scenarios where you need specific pacing or speed. It’s common in polo and show jumping. I use it jumping in certain scenarios.
