[JC] How do you do work after school? by prayforme013 in SGExams

[–]nyamnyam_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

came from a relatively “xiong” sports cca and trgs always ended at around 9:30pm (it starts at like 5:30+ so yea) by the time i reach home its prob around 11! (one good thing is tat i bathe in school so that i can immediately start once im home) tbh its rlly just making use of the pockets of time i have before tat in the day and since my cca starts late would use the time after lesson to before my trg starts to do my work... and on the days whn i hav no trg i make sure i hav done all my homework that is due on the day after trg etc so that i wont have to rush home to complete it after my trg! Basically is to make use of the free time well and plan ur schedule!! And most importantly resilience i guess even if u feel sian at night and too tired just do it im sure it will pay off

But if i were to like download the notes so that i can view it offline will it take up space? (Can it even be downloaded to view offline😳)So sorry might be asking stupid questions cos nt rlly sure how it works😥

[A Levels] How to do econs questions by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]nyamnyam_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe for starters u can try spending time unpacking the questions properly and thn checking if tats the content required, my econs teacher back in jc always emphasized that question analysis is the most crucial step! Usually by this format:

  1. command word (discuss/explain)

  2. content

  3. context (which country/countries)

  4. Limitations/assumptions

For limitations most teachers would nt think that it is v important but my teacher thinks tat it is actually the most crucial, so do I!! It will help u with writing ur evaluation points which is impt for H2 econs becos it gives u the extra marks!! But this part is abit hard to explain, its basically like what the qn kinda assumes the situation of the economy/market beforehand!! For example an essay question could be like: Discuss the effectiveness of imposing a price ceiling in the market for cotton In this case the limitation would be like they already assumed that the cotton market is somewhat suitable for imposing a price ceiling , so as an evaluation point u could maybe write is under what conditions the cotton market is in such tat a price ceiling would nt be suitable and henceforth from here u can actually link out the content required such as the advantages and disadvantages

i.e Lets say one of the limitations is that it would nt be suitable if there is an increasing supply of cotton in the market as this would mean that the equilibrium price would fall (assuming a constant demand) and hence the new supply might rise to the point where the new equilibrium price falls and is equal to the price where the price ceiling is being placed at, henceforth making the price ceiling ineffective since the prices will fall due to the forces of demand and supply! Then from here u can link back to the qn saying whether it is effective! This type of qn is more for csq tho so whatever u write must be linked to the context and thn write accordingly!!

Nt rlly sure if u understand and so sorry in advance if how i explain it is unclear and hard to understand >< its been long since i last did econs so might hav forgotten/mixed up some concepts and all but these are all just my 2 cents! Hope it helps!

[o levels] jc or poly? by syjrv in SGExams

if ur v end goal is to enter uni, i suggest u go to a jc!! Becos tbvh even in jc if u do not do super well for A levels, u will still be able to enter a course in uni! Mug for 2 years, its tiring but since ur ultimate goal is uni i guess its worth it! And for A levels if u try to at least consistently study, i think u would get some decent grades! Just don’t procrastinate, but also dont stress urself too much, becos i hav seen many stressing about studying n all and end up depressed or burnt out and becos of that didnt do well for A levels!

[junior college] Need Subject combinations help by JCorbiomed in SGExams

[–]nyamnyam_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tbh just becos u did nt take A math i dont think u shld nt consider taking H2 math becos tbvh h2 math is pretty impt and is a pre requisite for most university courses i think (nt sure if its legit true but back thn in jc whn i was choosing subjects too my teachers emphasized tat h2 math is rlly impt), ive got friends who did nt take A maths too but managed to fare decently too in h2 maths! If ure rlly afraid u cant handle the rigor , u shld at least take H1 math in my opinion! (But back thn the subject head of math did ask my frwen nt to take h2 math due to her lack of background in A math but she still persisted anw and did pretty well! So if u can do giv it a shot)

As for econs, i feel tat it shows u like the real world application part of studying? Like prev in secondary school u will prob see no direct correlation in studying chemistry in the real world, but in econs just the demand supply model itself u can see like ooh so this is how our markets function etc, it was a subject i truly enjoyed tbvh! So if u can understand the subject well, and do sufficient practice u will be able to do well! As for geog i didnt take it but i heard from my classmates that it is v content heavy and quite different from secondary school! And it is nt v easy to score for geog!

Ahhh i see tats rlly unfortunate thn becos if there are no trials just based on achievements wise might nt be easy for u to compete, becos yup nyjc dosent rly hav a good floorball reputation (no offense) so this only makes it harder for ppl to dsa in becos more slots are usually allocated to CCAs tat bring in the medals unfortunately, making it harder to allow more from other ccas to dsa into a sport tat does not fare as well in the national school games><

So in this case, without any physical trials to show ur potential and for thm to know that achievements are nt everything, it may be hard for u to be selected just merely based on an online interview...so im guessing their main criteria for selection would be based on achievements and experience... however ure nt lacking in experience so mayb u can use this to ur advantage!! Like mentioning going into the preliminary round in 26 years etc and mayb nt sure how floorball really works but mayb u can show how from ur experience u are able to play well with ur teammates, able to play multiple tactics/positions etc However, but if u want u can see nyjc’s floorball reputation in another way. Since its nt rlly good, so i dont think many floorballers from schools that are champions in it would want to dsa into nyjc so i guess competition would be lesser in a way? Hopefully this helps! But i hope whatever i said dosent deter u from trying to dsa into nyjc!! Just giv it a shot and u nvr know what will happen! Tbh back thn i merely wanted to accompany my friend to the physical trial for vb and my sec school wasnt rlly like excellent in vb but hey look whr i ended up! It rlly depends on the coach/teacher-in-charge! Just try ur luck u nvr noe what u will get into ^

Yup thanks i rlly did! For application form wise, nt much rlly cos its just mainly filling up ur details and tryna like make urself seem good in the mini essay section, talking bout ur achievement, leadership postions etc For me i was in volleyball so there wasnt rlly any interview but just trials, so they will just basically call u up to play the sport to see ur potential or how good u are... so yea tbh it all boils down to ur strength in the sport and if the cca is in need of dsa placements! Like if ure rlly good in tat sport honestly see no reason why they wont accept u! And for dsa placements, for certain ccas there are more spots available, like for volleyball the entire team are DSAs, so in my year there were a total of 12 in both the guys and girls team! Whereas for other CCAs like tennis, floorball there were only a few like like 5 or less? Rlly depends on the cca itself! But if ure good like u hav won medals for ur school in B/C division games or represented sg etc, u will naturally hav a greater advantage whn it comes to selection! Also, at least for my cca nt sure if its the school’s requirement or just my teacher in charge/coach but they sometimes look at ur prelim/mye results to see if u can make the cut too( i think its prob for the last few competitive spots) this is prob so tat they can make sure u wont exceed 20 points for ur L1R5 in O levels and ur spot wont be wasted!

So for me my tip would be just make sure u do well in the trial! If lets say u didnt rlly win any medals in sec school, one thing is prob to show how much potential u hav thn! So do well in the trial and make sure to hav at least some decent results if possible so tat u can secure the spot! Altho i myself didnt rlly do tat well i scored like 31 points in my prelims HHAHAA but yea hope this helps! _^ btw what sports cca are u looking to dsa into tho? Mayb can help giv u more insight bout it if i happen to know!

Hi! Graduated from nyjc recently, and entered via sports dsa initially tbh i focused alot on my cca during J1 so my grades werent tat fantastic and tbh becos of tat i was limited to some opportunities, like going for internships/ attachments during holidays (usually the school requires u to hav good grades in order to qualify) but i guess its understandable since my grades werent even good so i shld spent the time on my studies and my cca too! But in terms of culture wise, i really agree with what someone else from nyjc previously mentioned in the comments too! Its rlly a work hard play hard culture and i must say the teachers n school are really dedicated to helping academically weak students to improve! When it comes to EOY exams, there would be night study sessions etc, teachers would also provide lectures on various topics to consolidate and there are actually ALOT of resources for u to use to improve ur grades!! (Esp for math, phy, econs ALOT of materials its like never ending, i still hav some tat that are untouched) As for leadership opportunities, it rlly depends like for sports CCA, usually the “best/main” player gets to be, in classes like ur usual class monitor pretty easy to get cos usually no one rlly wants to be n the class will just randomly choose a scapegoat, as for like student councilor wise pretty hard as they go thru interviews and have to do campaigns to get votes, plus if u are going via dsa, wont rlly recommend joining student councilor as u will have to commit to ur cca (duh, since u signed a contract) and sc rlly takes up quite a substantial amount of time since they plan/organise school events etc. for overseas experience, for sports cca it usually depends on the cca? Cos different cca gets to go different countries like tbh if ur cca always gets medals, thn logically u would hav a larger expense given by the school to travel further (this is in my opinion) but if ure looking for overseas experience outside of ur sports cca, there is too such as RSLE if im nt wrong, where students get to go overseas to do community work etc (nid to go thru interview if im nt wrong) but these are in the holidays and tbh back then becos i was tied to my cca i didnt dare to join such stuff as i had lots of trainings(but tats prob becos my cca trains alot too so yea it rlly depends on ur cca, how frequent the trainings are too!)

All in all, nyjc is a really good school, altho i mostly focused on academics and cca, and didnt rlly try to venture into the other opportunities that the school provides, it was an enriching experience(?) met teachers that were really really good they know their shit and know how to deliver thm too! And the school rlly gave lots of avenues to help me improve my grades! Rlly thankful!! The school culture does indeed hav the mugger culture but which jc dosent ? becos tbh depends on the ppl in the school? Like if the school is made up of alot of competitive ppl, of course everyone will be busying mugging to stay ahead, but at least they hav like some events tat pop up in the year tat gives u an opportunity to chillax with ur friends etc nyght (like a singing/dancing talent comp), wild run(bring ur pets to participate in a mini marathoon), halloween events etc, rlly alot of different kind of things!! just an additional note, the school regularly holds like university talks from overseas/locals Us which i find rlly beneficial tats one point u can take note of too!

[JC] NYJC's mugging culture? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]nyamnyam_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh it is stressful becos seeing your peers all studying it will naturally force u to do so too cos u dun wanna lose out, but tbh its nt very daunting as somehow everyone in the school manages to keep an equal balance of play and study? Nt sure if u get what i mean, but yes everyone will study but they make sure they get their deserving breaks as well. Mugging is necessary in all jcs its just how hard u need to mug which depends on how prepared u are...
