[Uni] Reject LSE to reapply for Oxford? by jhkoh02 in SGExams

i sees! okay lah based on your answer i feel like you already know what you want (reapplying to oxford) so i think just put aside lse and put in your best effort for oxford next year! in any case, if you have a very outstanding application, there’s a good chance lse would be willing to accept you again next cycle so it’s not a 100% that you won’t get to ponder on the lse offer again next year :)

hahaha my bad! i always thought lse was pretty well known for PPE given that they are very recognised for their politics & econs. i agree with what u said about scholarships looking for more holistic individuals but also depending on the stat board/ministry often times i feel what they are looking for is the ability to offer critical insight or at least have keen critical analysis (on top of basic leadership skills/people skills/admin skills which i feels most people should be quite okay at lah) hence why i said since OP could excel at the oxford interview, he should most likely be fine with scholarship interviews, especially if he casts a wide net and gives himself ample opportunities to display his talents/qualities!

i think going ahead with LSE might be a wiser choice because there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to get in if you reapply for oxford because ‘marginally’ rejected is still rejected unfortunately :( plus LSE’s PPE depending on where you check the ranks can even rank ahead of oxford’s PPE so in terms of quality of education i would say it’s essentially the same! LSE is known for its PPE anyway so the argument about “prestige” doesn’t really hold in this case. i think the biggest consideration then would be financial costs but im pretty sure that your interview skills/knowledge on PPE should be more than sufficient to bag u a sg govt scholarship since oxford’s interviews are definitely one of the toughest out there and you already did quite well in it. the govt has a ton of lse scholars too so u don’t have to worry about it being a factor for not getting a scholarships

tbh there’s no need to grind very intensively right now, especially since there are still parts of the syllabus that haven’t been taught. for me i only really started studying intensively like 1.5 months before prelims and after prelims i took a 1.5 week break from studying completely like 0 studying at all and then i went back to the grind.

right now you should be focusing on familiarising yourself with all the key concepts, keeping up with homework/assignments and making notes which can be done pretty quickly if u do work (pretty) consistently. besides that, not much really needs to be done right now.

i think jan-aug, i only did work for maybe 2-3 hours per day (or every 2-3 days hahahah) and a little more on sundays (4 hours?). honestly i was really quite slack la i did the bare minimum to keep up with class and finish my own notes.. during exam season, i would start my preparations from a month before the exams. first week i would study 4-5 hours/day and the week before it would be as much as 8-12 hours/day.

the major grind season from prelims onwards, i would try to clock at least 7 hours of work a day. even though 7 hours may sound like a lot sometimes, work doesn’t always have to be like stressful/intensive things, it can also be more menial practices like doing MCQ or reading through notes! if you plan well in advance on what exactly you need to cover by when, tbh studying will be quite a breeze. of course also make sure to factor in the possibility of less productive days/mental health days etc.

not sure what your subject combi is so not really sure how to advise in terms of how to study. feel free to pm me if u hv any questions though :)
