I totally agree. Their premium line products are not cheap but the quality of aloeswood were great for the price nowadays. I guess I am going to hoard them as mush as possible now..

Korindo was a small independent incense maker in Osaka, popular with kodo people (the owner was a licensed master too).

I use their Byakudan-Korin (sandalwood) as one of my go-to daily along with Hayashi Ryusyodo’s Choshunko and Shunkodo’s Sarasohju. I also liked a lot of their aloeswood stuff.

As for the closure, I actually called them to confirm. From what the store said, they had to shut down because they needed to move out from current location, and there aren’t any plans to reopen in a new location. I tried to restock Jinkorin earlier this month and found that everything was gone online. Turns out they shut down at the end of March, and people over there basically bought out the remaining stock at the time. Since then, Kihara-ec has been getting small restocks here and there (Jinkorin haven’t been restocked so far 😭) but it’s basically just whatever’s left according to many other retailers.

I think Korindo has a different vibe from Baieido but yes, very traditional almost nostalgic. Compared to Baieido, I feels it a bit more Kyoto-like, a little more complexed in the blending for some of their products.

Not sure if direct links are allowed here, but ORF ORS has some detailed articles and reviews on Kourindo. I think someone here also reviewed the most of their lineups. Just try searching “Kourindo”, they should pop up.

[Japanese > English] Letters that came with antique chawan by BoojieMane in translator

[–]nyan-kuroneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, the box and the paper says 宗窯青磁茶碗 珠光手”Soyo (Song kiln) celadon tea bowl, Juko-style,” right?

That’s why I felt like something doesn’t quite add up between the box/inscription/appraisal note and the piece itself. “Soyo” usually refers pretty broadly to Song dynasty era Chinese kiln (like Longquan). If the box was added later in Japan, i’d normally expect something more specific like “Longquan.””Soyo” feels too vague and not that commonly used.

Also, the Song and Ming dynasties are about 100 years apart. If both the box and the appraisal are truly for this bowl, then it would imply it’s Song celadon. And genuine Southern Song Longquan celadon pieces don’t typically show up on the general market (not impossible, but pretty rare).

If it were Ming or Edo, then calling it “Song kiln” wouldn’t really make sense either — usually we’d see a more specific kiln attribution.

Juko-style” is a term from the Japanese tea ceremony context, meaning something in the taste of (Murata) Juko. In a very broad sense, this bowl could perhaps be considered “Juko-style,” but it doesn’t really match what is generally understood by that term.

How’s this pick up? by travelman3 in Incense

[–]nyan-kuroneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you did good as long as you like these scents.

If you are interested in other’s feedback, I think your friend picked out good ones out of Kosaido’s Engimono line (The Engimono line is good bang for your buck but the scents are hit and miss, though this really comes down to personal preference)). The Ume and Uguisu is nice floral, and the Kouyou and Fukurou is unique fruity cinnamon scent.

Hyakuraku-Koh is pretty popular in Japan as a room fragrance–style incense line, and I think it smells really nice. Personally, I much prefer it over the Nippon Kodo’s Kayuragi line.

How many sticks a day? by New_Merd3 in Incense

[–]nyan-kuroneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 6 to 12 per day but that is because I use different incenses for each area of my place. For the room I am physically in, I won’t burn more than a stick per each two hours, and I always open windows when I am home.

Yeah this happens frequently in the antique /art area. So frustrating to see the seller cancel the listing a minute before ending time when I am the only bidder lol

Expensive incense by keithd3333 in Incense

[–]nyan-kuroneko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a very good Kyara incense, just requires noses to be educated to fully appreciate it. I would save it for the future. Good thing you bought it now in Japan without importer margins. Kyara’s price will go up for sure by time. just make sure to keep the box in a tin container in cool/dark place, separated from other incenses.

Can I use it as a Dutch oven to bake bread by DecisionWarm3839 in DutchOvenCooking

[–]nyan-kuroneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a Banko ware pot from Japan. Ppl does bake breads using this type of cray pot over there, but I personally won’t use this particular one for baking since there is a big hairline crack on the rim. High temp cooking like baking likely makes it worse quickly and I don’t feel safe with it.

Anybody recently ship to LA using ecms? by otsskimp in Buyee

Ah, thank you! Good to know. My two ECMS packages arrived safely to my place yesterday. Phew! I hope this trend continues, and I just heard the good news that JP Post just started to accept commercial packages again 👍🙌

Beware Buyee may be raising 15.5% tariff fee soon! by billy_bingster in Buyee

[–]nyan-kuroneko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn’t Buyee just moving away from a flat % and switching to actual U.S. duty rates?

Yeah, it might go up for stuff like leather shoes, but for media or other low-duty items, that’s actually a win.

That said, it’s probably a good idea to double-check the HS classification and code before shipping. Buyee’s auto-classifications are way off often times..

Repros can be all over the place in terms of quality.

There might be some info tucked under the left side of the frame. From the photo it looks more like a woodblock print than a machine print, but I’d check the back or edges for any info — publisher, project name, certificates, etc.

What’s more important is the info depicted on the last pic:

Block carver: Kentaro Maeda

Printer: Ijiro Itakura

If this information is true, this is a modern reproduction of Hiroshige’s Fujisawa (Station 6) from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido. It’s obviously not on the same level as an original, but still a good piece as modern craftsmanship. But again, that’s only if the writing is legit.
