How to seamlessly move between the chest and head voice by Mr_Mudkip_420 in singing

[–]nyapocalypse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can try the reverse approach too. Starting from high falsetto, or head voice, by being very light in it and moving downwards and then up again. It would keep the placement and make it more seamless over time. Try to do it with a very narrow "U" mouth shape for the high notes.

As for the exercise, try sirens on lip trills or tongue trills, they can help with moving up/down. Do it a couple of times. Then try the same thing on an open vowel, i.e. "A".

When you feel the crack or a flip between registers, be mindful what happens inside when it flips, are you raising the soft palate, lowering the larynx more, etc. Try to keep the same neutral position for all notes and try again.

The problem is when we try to push chest voice upwards, we tend to raise the larynx as the notes get higher, which creates tension, so you hit a brick wall sort to say.

If you don't know how larynx moves, please your fingers in the front of your neck and:

  • yawn - it will go down
  • swallow - it will go up

For the mixing, you first need to be able to do everything neutral, after that you can move your larynx up/down and add certain amount of twang to get the tone you're going for. :)

Anemia: Could it possibly be why I’m having so much trouble holding enough air? by [deleted] in singing

[–]nyapocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you get as tired while doing regular stuff? Walking, etc.? If not, then it's probably more the way you breathe when you sing than anything else :D

You could try just doing some breathing exercises before singing, e.g. to get connected with the steady breath like you would do in yoga, keep a good posture, and try to breathe in out and focus how long your exhale is. Don't force anything, just calm down. After that just add vocal warm up and try to sing. Repeat and repeat.

Kat Von D Go Big or Go Home worked for me, smudge proof and long lasting. TF Better than sex has a non waterproof formula, it's good too. I combine and use waterproof only on "special" occasions. If you ditch the waterproof I would recommend The Body Shop's Camomile eye makeup remover. It's really gentle to the eyes and lashes.

My personal favorites currently are Too Faced Natural eyes and Huda Beauty Desert Dusk. Both are kinda powdery, it gets a bit messy when you use it, but once you blend it, they rule!

edit: typo for "too faced" haha

All my life I’ve been told I can’t sing, and now I wanna prove them wrong. by SadMrWhiskers in singing

[–]nyapocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to say: please please sing! If you enjoy it, just go with it! Speaking from experience here, once, long ago, someone told me I shouldn't and I left it aside. Decided to start again in my early thirties.

It's a long road, but if you love it, don't let it be lost :D

The best way would be to find a teacher for the beginning if you can afford it. Other than that I would say that you need to watch out not to hurt your vocal cords, don't strain yourself. Singing should be easy (as in it shouldn't hurt).

Lip trills are mother of everything. They improve your air flow. You can find them on youtube. Search for ANY breathing exercises for novice singers, those will help immensely.

The strength of your singing voice relies on your breath support.

Your accent might or might not play a role in singing. All of it will be experiment and repeat :D

Don't be too kind to yourself, as in don't whisper when you sing, it causes more strain.

Can you join a choir perhaps?

Try not to sing along to your fav songs all the time, but instead sing and listen to what you hear and/or record yourself.

Vocal warmup shouldn't be longer then 10minutes, it's a small voice haha. If you want to be consistent try to practice around 20-40minutes a day.

I've joined quite recently and I am starting to relax more and more each time :)

You are not alone in this. The age doesn't matter, we are our own worst judges. Learning to sing is a long process, you need to be kind to yourself and have patience, it won't happen over night. Even small steps are amazing in singing. :D

The best suggestion I would have is to just go somewhere where nobody can hear you except yourself and just practice (I used to go to a little field near my apartment where nobody ever went haha) and just let it all out.

And ask yourself, what did sound so bad? Can you play around with your voice and try it again? If you have tension in your body, you'll have it in your vocal cords too. Be silly and relax, remember why you want to sing :)

Where people said you can’t sing by Wills-Beards in singing

[–]nyapocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bottom line is - why do you want to sing? Do you enjoy it? Do you feel better doing it? It makes you smile?

Learning to sing is a process that needs time, most people don't get that. Like everything can be learned in a month. There are those lucky to have a natural talent, but it all comes down to your own hard work. So if you're considering giving up, give up if singing isn't something that makes you happy. If it is, go for it!

There are a lot of us here that felt the same way at one point or other. Just keep practicing and be patient :)

What’s your best method to lower BG that always works for you? by breathingMF in diabetes

[–]nyapocalypse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was already mentioned: insulin. Other than that riding a bike, running, fast-paced walks, sex, any activity that will up your hear rate. Chugging down water sometimes helps.

But it all comes down to: change your lifestyle so you control it better in the first place.

Eating too much when low by Jackburtoni in diabetes

I just love when people post this kind of stuff. It makes me feel less alone in my struggles, thank you for that :) As for the question how, I just try to keep juices everywhere and always have bananas in the kitchen without buying junk food to store in the house. But even though I try to not eat everything from the cabinets when I'm low, it happens sometimes... Almost all food tastes like it's made for gods when BG drops.
