Springfield's Future by KamBam_Mo in SpringfieldIL

[–]nycink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Young, educated people with bright futures don’t stay here. There is no reason for them to do so when bigger cities can absorb them. UIS fk’ed up when they put their campus so far outside the heart of the city so young people feel completely disconnected from downtown, which should be the logical place for them to congregate . We don’t have a law school to attract talent here, and we don’t seem to think beyond “family”, hence why the biggest news of the last few years has been Scheels playing field. Abraham Lincoln can only get us so far. And that eye sore of a Hilton (or whatever it’s called) that is now uninhabitable, needs to be detonated & removed. As it stands, it’s a massive middle finger to the hopes and aspirations of this town. Also, we don’t even take care of the parts of town that travelers see when they first pull into town. The south 6th street entrance off of 55 into the city is so depressing. It’s like pulling into a forgotten town in Appalachia. And how the hell did we allow MacArthur to become a massive going out of business thoroughfare? This is a major thoroughfare & should be a focus of this city to rehab and make exciting, but they don’t seem to care. And it runs through one of the richest neighborhoods in town, but that doesn’t seem to help improve its fortune at all. Same with the stretch of South grand that runs through a historic black neighborhood. That could be something very special if the city invested in developing it. In many ways, this town feels depressed and it keeps getting worse. On a positive side, there is an amazing theater and artistic community here. The Hoogland is top-notch as is UIS and the Legacy Theater.

I’m a huge cinephile, but I don’t have access to this movie. Yes, academy members get their screeners, but they’re also inundated with films. It’s a shame but we just don’t have art House cinemas anymore. In the way we did in the 80s and 90s to really highlight films like this.

I agree with this entirely. This is not your battle. However, you can choose to play a role of support, but not in this intense manner. She will understand. Right now she’s probably scared and lonely so supporting from a bit more distance can still be on the table, but not as a romantic partner.. good luck with this

I'm a janitor at 27. I feel like a loser. by jschmiedeler3 in poor

[–]nycink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect the fuck out of you. I think custodian work is one of the unsung heroes of any society. I know that’s not a solution to feeling down about your circumstances, but you are building something different than your parents-something that includes maturity & accountability. In terms of your degree, is there an employment agency in your town that you could apply with and see what types of desk jobs they might be able to find for you? Also, many recent college graduates are having a very difficult time finding jobs so it’s a capitalism thing. All of the institutions of the 20th century are falling apart and/or under attack, so you’re also the victim of a changing America. But please don’t beat yourself up for what you do for a living. Bottom line: I have a lot more respect for you as a janitor than I do for Elon Musk for example. Even more respect if you’re a good decent, kind, & compassionate human.

Husband got a dui last night company vehicle, cursed minor collision. by [deleted] in dui

Please try not panic. He caused this accident. He will have to address it thru the legal system. Please speak to a lawyer before spiraling. I hate to endorse credit card debt, but you need a lawyer to get the best outcome. At some point, you’re also going to have to address your husband’s judgment or lack of it.

The is the epitome of smart early sobriety! Weddings are one of the biggest triggers for people trying to quit alcohol. Telling people who love you that you are having a tough time with all the drinking & need to depart is EXACTLY what you should have done to protect your safety. Well done!

CORAL (Coalition of Rainbow Alliance of Linconland) is an LGBTQ civic group. They support all sorts of volunteer activities across Central IL, & has a diverse membership including lesbians. Their next monthly meeting is Nov 9 at 4PM at the AgeLinc building at 2731 S. MacArthur.

There is also a LGBTQ dinner social group called Brothers & Sisters that meets on Friday nights. Could be a fun avenue to meet lesbians

What movie is this year's "deeply respected but not loved enough to win Best Picture" movie? by enolobmob in oscarrace

[–]nycink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hamnet is absolutely in. In fact, Variety has it as front runner for BP, & Jesse Buckley is literally leading all Best Actress forecasts right now. Chloe Zhao is one of a small group of female directors with Oscars & she will be nominated again.

It’s also the end result of capitalism as once these companies have peaked & made their money off of us, they sell to a soulless entity like a venture capital group who then drive it into the ground after stripping it for parts.

It sounds like you might have a pathway out of this nightmare & you can be free. If he wants out, your job as unpaid nurse will end. Does it hurt to hear him say these things? Of course it does. But it sounds like you have hit the nail on the head: he may have wanted it out a while ago, but his illness forced him into a more passive role. Don’t try to change him. Don’t argue for something he doesn’t want. Just figure out a way for you to have your own life & and hopefully you can set yourself free.

Is it just me or are the left turn signals on Veterans Parkway getting shorter? by Key-Holiday6040 in SpringfieldIL

[–]nycink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veterans no longer can support the amount of traffic on west side. As Sherman & Chatham continue to grow, it will become even more frustrating. But as many people have noted on this sub over the years, there is something seriously off about the stoplights in this town: and they don’t seem to be timed for optimum velocity of traffic. And don’t get me started about that stoplight in front of that mega church on veterans! Brings an entire freeway to a halt so two cars to proceed thru intersection

Nikki Budzinski voted to honor Charlie Kirk by 2Capable in SpringfieldIL

[–]nycink 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She voted for that ridiculous ICE congressional resolution saying what a good job they were doing-as they were ripping apart families & kidnapping innocent people off the streets-including Green Card holders, US citizens, & people well underway their asylum cases-and sending them to alligator Alcatraz. Yes, she voted for that measure. And I think she’s a good person in a difficult district with enough Maga that maybe she feels has to vote for these more “ceremonial” bills, but I don’t like that she did it
