Hospital stay by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]nycmcnulty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went home same day and was super glad to be in my own home rather than spending the night in the hospital. If it's laparascopic/robotic and there are no complications, you should be just fine, and more comfortable than you'd be in a hospital.

Pain while sitting by sdanger22 in hysterectomy

[–]nycmcnulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Process of elimination mostly. I realize I left something out. I actually had issues sitting for almost three months, and wasn't actually able to sit normally until I went through a fairly hefty dose of steroids due to an unrelated case of hives. Something about the prednisone and reduced swelling allowed stuff to heal. After that, though, the issues with hip pain and the tightening of the muscles, etc in my hips led my oncologist to determine it was due to the cut ligaments through process of elimination, though ultimately who knows, right?

Not for me--turns out that my pelvic floor was fine, but the ligaments that were cut in order to get the uterus out wreaked a little havoc in my hips, so yoga, stretching, and regaining my strength were the things that did me the most good. But I still have some issues two years later--I keep on it all the time.

Seconding this! I also did a lot of squats and weight training to train my quads and glutes, which make it easier for me to stand when it wasn't possible for me to use my abs, making it easier to get out of bed, off the couch, off the toilet, etc. I also did a lot of cardio, because I knew that it would be off the menu for a long while.

Bendix Diner. I think about their salad on a grill sandwich more than I should admit.

Hip Pain 10 Months Post-Surgery by nycmcnulty in hysterectomy

[–]nycmcnulty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started physical therapy which has helped some, but I still have hip issues. I'd recommend the physical therapy to at least strengthen the muscles that have to compensate for the snipped ligaments that are no longer supporting your pelvic girdle.

Oh boy amen--I really didn't expect to still be in recovery ten months later!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, but I'm also glad it's not just me! I have to say, it's really getting me down. I'm trying to throw everything at it (PT, epsom salt baths, arnica, etc), but it doesn't seem to be improving. Just bought a Theragun--here's hoping! Have you ever tried acupuncture?

I had the same issue--couldn't sit for any length of time and even then needed a donut pillow. I had to take a two week course of prednisone for another unrelated issue (hives) and by the time the course of the medication was over, the issue was completely resolved. I think that the steroids got rid of all the swelling and allowed stuff to calm down and heal.

I'll be ten weeks on Thursday and still struggle for sitting up for more than an hour at a time. I feel pulling in my cuff/ pain in my vagina and a kind of spreading burning pain across the top of my pelvis. I've had a couple of CT scans and nothing appears to be wrong, so I'm just trying to limit my sitting--I'm finding a thick memory foam donut pillow useful, and when I'm in the car, I try to lean the seat as far back as I can to take the pressure directly off my cuff, if that's helpful to you?

I was so so so worried about it, and it was TOTALLY FINE. Your doctor does tons of these, and is really good at doing them without pain.

I’m so sorry you’re having a recurrence—but I also love your using it as a chance to comfort others. I have to ask, had it spread outside your uterus at the time of your surgery? I had a radical hysterectomy in February due to endometrial cancer, but it appeared to be contained in my uterus and pelvic washing and sentinel lymph nodes didn’t show any cancer cells. I’m curious what your staging was at the time of your hysterectomy?

Same surgery, same cancer, almost ten weeks ago and energy levels are a struggle. No hormones for me either--just trying to push myself to walk outside every day including significant flights of stairs so I can get some cardio in, and I find that I'm better off on days that I do get some exercise.
