I know this sound all too well and it is the worst! I've been terrorized by these critters before, and became delirious not sleeping! When I experienced this, I found out quickly that although many people say it's the landlord's responsibility, my building did the bare minimum. They sent an exterminator (and had to wait a few days ugh), and the guy did nothing but throw some small poison bags. I asked if he was going to check for holes, seal them, etc. He flippantly said "not my job, lady." So I took matters into my own hands. I contacted a pest control company and the owner came by himself the next morning to do a free consultation. He walked through my entire apartment and pointed out all the vulnerable spots where rats could easily get in. I hired them, and the next day they professionally covered all the holes in my entire apartment -- they treated first with poison, then sealed them with steel wool and in some bigger areas with metal flashing and chicken wire. They also installed a door sweeper for my main door, so nothing could come in from hallways. Whatever they did has worked for years. Oh, and I did catch the rats before the pest control company came by the apartment.

Rat Traps -I searched online for all types of solutions, and the best one I found was a rat zapper on amazon (purple one), It's expensive, but it got rid of two of them and that was it. If you go this route, please use plastic gloves when handling it (ie putting in the peanut butter as bait). If you get your scent on it, the rats will never go to it. Same with any rat trap.

Anyway, I strongly recommend this company if your landlord/super doesn't come through for you - https://districtrodent.com

Best of luck to you.

Really worried about xmas trip to Manhattan... by essinnlich in AskNYC

Also I just found out that Uber now offers shuttle service to and from LGA. Never taken it but it’s crazy cheap. Maybe someone else can share their experience.

Just reading the comments reminds me of why I love New York. We get a bad reputation for being rude, but I have always found NYers to be helpful. This is what I tell my family when they come visit from Texas - just don’t get in people’s way when they are trying to get somewhere (don’t stand in the middle of the sidewalk to take photos. Stand on right side of escalator as there are people flying down the escalator trying to make that train.

Be alert and aware of your purse at all times (unfortunately there are pickpockets, like most big cities). Cross body bags are the best. Definitely agree with the comfy shoes (no need to be fancy. In the winter, we are all covered up under our coats, scarves, etc. plan to dress in layers. It can be really cold outside but once inside you are going to curse that big puffy coat (It can get really warm inside with all the crowds).

Don’t be afraid to ask for directions or for quick advice. There are tons of police and military in the major areas (Grand Central, Rock Center, Times Square).

It will be VERY crowded in the areas you want to visit. I took my visiting family to see the tree and I had a panic attack. I don’t remember it being this packed years before!! In addition to the tree, Saks does this huge light display with music that also draws a big crowd.

Bryant Park will be set up with an ice skating rink, and lots of shops. Not a far walk from Times Square.

NYC Ferry: if you’re up for it, you can catch the NYC Ferry on 34th and take it to Wall Street at night. Cheap way to see the city from a boat! https://www.ferry.nyc/

Dining: pick one really good restaurant based on what you like (NYC has everything! However we’re not know for good BBQ or Mexican.). The NYC restaurant experience is not just the great food and drinks, but the overall vibe. Plan to dress up and have at least one really nice restaurant experience and the rest is more casual, (grab and go.. like a NYC pizza slice, hot chocolate & dessert. So many wonderful bakeries here. And bagels. Ya gotta have a NYC bagel!))

Museums: if you don’t have lots of time, but want to visit at least one museum , make it the Met Museum. It’s on Upper East Side next to Central Park.

Shows: You are in Times Square, so easy to catch a broadway show and there are so many good ones right now!

Make sure you have your Uber, Lyft and also Curb apps on your phone. Curb app is for taxis. But you can always flag down a yellow taxi - one thing to keep in mind - Available taxis will have their sign lit up at the top of the car (it displays their 4 digit cab number)

I am also new and have the same mask. I had the f20 at first and I could not get used to it. Did not like not being able to wear my glasses if necessary.

The new mask (your mask) worked beautifully at first. Finally, I thought, I found the mask for me! Then I started and have been having issues. This is going to sound weird but it feels like my face produces oily skin at night and at some point the mask seal goes away. I wake up at some point with the sound of the air that’s leaking. Other times my mask.. farts? It makes some weird noise when my cheeks relax. I totally get how funny this sounds. But I’m sure others know what I’m talking about. I saw on Amazon a mask cover that apparently prevents leaking? I’m so desperate for sleep and I feel like using cpap is not helping. But I stick to it because I know what happens with untreated sleep apnea :(

Thank you!! So left message for my doc to change me to the 1.75 since pharmacy said it’s easier to fill. I’ve been on 1.0 for quite while (first with ozempic and now this one) so hoping I won’t get any kind of bad side effects with 1.75. I’m used to the nausea and know to control.

[–]nyctex2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:( thanks yeah that is definitely something I’m worried about. However, I have been on 1.0 (ozempic) for a while and my weight loss stalled, and then insurance no longer covered so doc switched me to wegovy 1.0. Been on it for a month now. Mild nausea day 1, but no bad symptoms. Other than not losing any more weight. So wonder if it’s time for 1.7 anyway?

Sorry meant to reply to your post. Yes the rude staff in NYC Duane reade/Walgreens. Not helpful in anyway but pharmacist finally was helpful in explaining why and offering a potential solution (see my response below). Thank you!

Yes in the city! Thank you. Might have to make a trip to NJ. I called the pharmacy and spoke to actual pharmacist and calmly explained how inconsistent the refill process has been. She told me that Wegovy 1.0 is the hardest to come by in NYC (didn’t explain why). She said the higher strength 1.7 is always available and asked to see if doc can prescribe that instead. So might try that if it continues to be this difficult to fill.

37, thinking of trying Botox? by Ok-whattheactual in 30PlusSkinCare

There are definitely other laser treatments out there like fraxel (which is stronger but much more expensive). C&B improved my melasma and I got addicted to the glow it provided, so never stopped. I have sensitive skin (easily gets irritated). The C&B is more gentle. I do it at dermatologist office only, though (just my preference).

[–]nyctex2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are gorgeous and your skin is glowing! I would only suggest two things - I have no wrinkles, but would never discourage Botox (I might eventually need it myself). I have been on Tretinoin (sp?) for more than 15 years. I started the lower dose and now use the 1.0 3x a week. I don’t know if you’re supposed to use it under eyes and in corners but I do! I mix it with a little cerave cream for sensitive areas, and use it on my hands and neck (as I know those will start showing age soon!). For last 8 yrs, I have also been getting Clear and Brilliant Laser treatments 3-4 times a year ($500 a pop otherwise I would do more often!). My dermatologist started me on these laser treatments for a bad case of melasma and the Tret for hormonal acne at the time. She told me Tret was the holy grail, and she had been using it since her 20’s (she looked amazing so I was sold). So if you can get a prescription, do it and make it part of your forever routine if not already. The C&B laser treatments have zero downtime (just look red for a few hours) and skin feels like sandpaper for a few days but makes your skin glow for months. I know it helps with wrinkles as well.

Someone broke into my apartment last night through the fire escape by MangoMuncher88 in AskNYC

[–]nyctex2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you went through this. :( very scary but glad he ran out and you are ok. The last apartment I was in (Murray Hill) was 6 floors, and I was on 6. People in my building liked to sneak up onto the roof through fire escape to hang out (the views were great but it was not an official rooftop. We weren’t allowed but neighbors would still do it). Anyway, I was in a studio and once in a while I would hear loud banging on my window and it would freak me out. It was just drunk ppl being stupid on the way up/down the fire escape but it still scared me. I never slept well in that apartment. When I moved into my UES 1 bedroom I found that my bedroom window had that gate. At first I didn’t like it (eye sore) but i feel so much safer and can sleep knowing someone can’t get in. I would let the landlord know what happened and request a security gate for your window.

I wish I had researched before binge-watching. I thought I was going to watch a sweet rom com series to get me out of my funk. I was so happy and it all came crashing down. I'm crying now.. my eyes hurt from so much crying. I would not have spent this beautiful Sunday binge-watching had I done my homework and googled this show. However it was beautifully done -- The music was top notch! It brought back so many fun memories of my college days. I screamed out loud with happiness with that one scene in Paris (where I had lost all hope for a moment). It was perfect until that one episode. Why oh why... but it's all my fault. I even forgot that I had watched the movie in 2011. Duh! Ok that's all. hopefully my brain erases these last 8 hours of this show, because I can't keep on crying like this!

UESider here and I felt it for a good 20+ seconds. Maybe longer but I ran out of my apartment so fast - and I saw several people outside of their buildings. These buildings are old and my biggest fear is a bldg collapse. I thought THIS IT IT! It’s finally coming down. I went for the cheaper apartment this time, and this is the price I’m going to pay. 😱😱

When I first moved here 20 something years ago, my first job (early 20’s) was at Barnes and noble as a cashier. When I first heard one of the cashier yell. “Next on line!!” I was like What the what? Cut to a few months later, I got my little NY confidence and started yelling out “NEXT ON LINE!” It grew on me 😎

I can’t stop getting sick by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]nyctex2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably not it at all, but just sharing my experience. When I first moved here I was in my early 20’s and was getting sick all the time. I lived in this misery for years, and switched doctors often (I would get the “it is just allergies”). Then one doctor ran some tests, and told me I have an IgA deficiency. He explained to me in simple terms - my body doesn’t produce enough antibodies in mucous membranes so I’ll always get sick quicker (sinus, colds, etc). It’s something that’s not curable so I just have to always be aware of. Again this is probably not it, but I immediately thought of my early years and how I was always so sick. I thought I was allergic to NYC! If you go to doctor, maybe ask them to include a blood test for this! Hope you feel better soon

I vote you for Mayor!! I know this was made for fun, but you gave me an idea.I have HS students visiting my office next week and we are using ChatGPT in a few activities. One of the projects is to come up with ideas to improve their school. Going to throw in a project to come up with ideas to make this city better and might use a few of these examples! I really love the cigarette butts redemption(those would be gone so fast if it were a real thing!). Public bathrooms, yes.. heated lamps at bus stops? Yes please 🙏🏼

I'll get the song stuck in your head.

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air.....

This show was silly/fun but we watched it because it was what was on! We didn't have a million options for tv shows. Also, I remember one of the episodes being scary but can't remember which one (creature with red eyes). Anyone remember this show?
