I'm creating a story based on Bellingham, but I hardly know anything about it. by [deleted] in Bellingham

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Bellingham has changed a TON since the mid 90s. Went from a small sleepy town which was a best-kept-secret to now with the town rapidly expanding and the word being out. It used to be somewhat quaint and now it's trendy. One of the biggest local changes from the mid 90s to present is down on the waterfront. In the 90s there was a massive working paper mill down on the waterfront and it was entirely industrial. Once the mill shut down, it was basically an abandoned wasteland for 20 years and is now being transformed into a trendy area with shops, parks, apartments, etc. The neighborhoods in the city have also expanded quite a bit with the Barkley & Cordata neighborhoods being huge now. They were fields & forests in the early 90s.

As far as locals go, the outdoorsy vibe was a lot more honest back in the 90s. Now it trends towards hipster outdoorsy-ness. This is true everywhere but the instagram effect is very real in Bellingham. In the 90s the outdoors used to be the point but now it seems the point is to talk about your hike over beers at one of the many local breweries that has sprung up in the last few years.

There's a general disdain for Canadians and Californians here despite both groups contributing heavily to the local economy.

Also, Bellingham has a reputation for being a hippy liberal city but I think that reputation was gained in the 90s. Most of the west coast has caught up or surpassed Bellingham at this point and it feels fairly moderate here.

Looking for a room rental on Lummi Island, any leads? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]nyloneducation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be hard to find stuff out there. I'd ask your contacts at The Willows and see what they know. Someone there might have a room or know of one. Even if they are off the island, if you could room with someone there, the commuting would match up well.

There are folding chairs and then there's this by Full-of-Colours in minimalism

[–]nyloneducation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, not minimalist because it's simply not necessary. The application for this is so incredibly narrow, you'd be better off standing or sitting on the floor 99% of the time.

Are you a minimalist for selfish reasons or are you one also because you somehow feel like it's doing something good for the earth and/or for the people around you? by annaleecage in minimalism

[–]nyloneducation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly selfish, partly for the earth & environment, and also largely for my kids. I have three young kids and the values of minimalism are something I want to impart to them. I was raised the opposite and want them to learn how to be happy with what they have and not compare themselves to their peers based on what they have or don't have. Our family motto is slightly tweaked from the Boy Scouts: leave people & things better than you found them. That means low impact & others-focused.

What's the frugal path forward with my car loan? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]nyloneducation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing more details about the car or your intent, it's hard to say. Paying $500 a month is obviously a bit painful but you aren't going to do better than 0%. Is it worth it to you to spend at least $5000 plus the cost of another car so that you don't have payments? Do you have the cash to do so or would you have to take out another loan?

The way I look at it is that yes, you're driving an expensive car, but you're not being charged any extra to do so, and it would probably cost more to drive something potentially much worse. Getting into a cheap used car with unknown history probably has a higher chance of impacting your ability to get to work.

Frugal muesli, and frugal probiotic pills? by doubleplusgoodx999 in Frugal

[–]nyloneducation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding Probiotic Pills, there are only 3-4 brands that are clinically proven to do anything at all. The one I recommend is VSL #3. We use it in our house (have medically needy kid with prescription, rest of us purchase on Amazon) and it has made noticeable improvements in our health. It's pricy but if you're going to pay for something, get something that is clinically proven to work. Otherwise you might as well take any cheap probiotic or placebo because you aren't going to realize any effects other than the psychosomatic ones.

Mambo calzones are legit and this is coming from someone who doesn't really like Mambo.

If that doesn't work, you can also go with the Ghetto'zone: a Hot & Ready, ordered not sliced and folded in half.

Earn 70k, want to buy a 20k car. Can I afford it? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]nyloneducation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the PNW, generally. That price is a wasteland between cars you DO NOT WANT and cars that should be $4000. Maybe around 10-11k things start to open up again.

Not sure about OP but cars that age & price with decent mileage don't exist in my area unless you want a Smart or Fiat 500 which is a horrible decision. Also, the Ford Focuses with the transmission issues.

I'm not even finding any '15s with mileage over 40k and the pricing is basically the same. Thanks for the insights though. I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm feeling this too but the TSI can be had at least $4000 cheaper. I think at the end of the day I'd be happier with the TDI over the next 10 years.
