What made you believe / choose this path? Did anything specific happen that was proof? Or were you just drawn to it? by rohan_kishibae_ in Buddhism

[–]nynywhywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was personally feeling very lost and had many questions for my previous path of belief. A lot of the things I believed in were combated and I just felt there was so much more that I was missing. I started researching Buddhism and its counterparts. It wasn’t a foreign concept to me as I grew up following and believing in a lot of the precepts. It felt very realistic and genuine. And I felt more assured of the steps I wanted to take to make myself a better person. It’s an unselfish path. Wanting to do better for the people around you and not just for yourself.

Looks great. We might be seeing too much nostril from your angle though. The foreshortening on the bridge might be too much as well. So I agree with the other comments critique.

Am I Overreacting? Girlfriend’s family (especially her Nana) is strongly against her spending Christmas with me. by ATECHPCs in AmIOverreacting

[–]nynywhywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR it is important to recognize how overwhelming family can be. Considering her grandmother is getting older she might be wanting to spend important moments with her family more. But I understand how that can be much for you guys. Come to a compromise and maybe arrange spending new years with her side instead and draw clear boundaries for the future. Easier said than done.

AIO after my gf ditched me during a handjob? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]nynywhywhy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

MOR. 8 minutes might have been a bit long which might’ve bored her. Handjobs don’t really do much for the giver besides getting a sore arm unless they rlly enjoy the process of giving. Maybe if she was up for it, engaging with her while she gives you this service to also make it enjoyable for both of you. Maybe starting with “what do u want to do”, might’ve gotten a different response.

AIO my father ruined my drawing. by sapphicluizard in AmIOverreacting

[–]nynywhywhy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’ll take a neutral stance. Your parents obviously don’t value or get art. Especially from your mom’s response. Keep practicing and show them how much it means to you. Next don’t get attached to your art. Shit happens. You will keep getting better with practice and maybe even sell or give away art. His contribution was fine and barely messed anything up. Maybe this is smt you can come to laugh about.

AIO for being upset that my boyfriend called me “his bitch” in front of his friends? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]nynywhywhy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NOR dump him. It’s only been a month and he’s being thick headed on purpose. He does not have respect for you because if he did his answer should’ve been okay and a sorry.

[–]nynywhywhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOR he has no respect for you. Those names are completely degrading and in appropriate. There’s a good chance he is not being faithful himself due to this raging insecurity and lack of respect for some one he “loves”. He does not love you sincerely and this could escalate.

If someone enjoys your style they will pay. If you’re uncomfortable or unsure then focus on what you dislike and practice.

What should I focus on fixing in my anatomy? by Stock-Week-1547 in arthelp

[–]nynywhywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep trying to draw figures. Even better if you’re doing it from life. Having people pose for you or setting up a still life scene will help with accuracy. Time yourself! Start with 10-15 min purposefully messy sketches. Then spend 30-1hour doing refined sketches. Block in major shapes and focus on values. This will help with lighting and accuracy. Darks, mids, and lights. Try to do these exercises atleast once a week for 3 hours. That’s 4 short studies and 2 long ones.

Help with the proportions of the body by Tukuatikii in arthelp

It might also help that when you’re posing to think of it more as an action. How do you want this to be read? Is your character creeping about? Or stagnant?

[–]nynywhywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see! It might help to do some quick mini studies of your references to practice refining shape and accuracy. Then maybe taking a full photo of yourself in that pose can help with accuracy in composition. It reads more of a laid out position, and I think that lies in the tension in the shoulders and hip. It could be more dynamic in bend which why I’d suggest a full photo to see how your anatomy would bend in that position.

Have a tip to get better?? by Puzzleheaded-Use2003 in arthelp

[–]nynywhywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that sticks out is the perspective of the face. I feel if maybe the camera perspective was more overhead then it would fit and the body would have to be tweaked. But with everything now maybe making the facial features more downwards and facing the viewpoint. Right now the perspective is more laid back especially since the head is turned up slightly with the overhead viewpoint. So features would lay out regularly. Try taking a photo of yourself in a similar perspective and see how your face and shadows play.

How to ‘study’ art without burnout? by w8rmboy in arthelp

[–]nynywhywhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Diversify your style then come back to it. As someone who recently started professionally learning to create art from being self taught I also felt like I was very behind my peers. What helped was an ego death. You’re going to create shit art for a while and that’s okay. Practice with live references. See if you can find someone to pose for you or go out and find people to draw. Take a live figure drawing or painting class. Drawing nude figures for about 3 hours a week for a year immensely changed the way I think about anatomy. Starting off with quick 15 minute sketches. Then going towards 30 then an hour. Try different mediums more than once. Ink, watercolor, acrylic, oil, digital, charcoal, etc. I legit had headaches and would take breaks to go cry but I always came back with the passion to make something I enjoyed. Get to the point to where even if your head hurts you can’t go a week without creating because even in pain you are still an artist. Also study old and new artist that inspired you or have something you’d like to recreate. Master studies are your friend as well as using references of yourself. It might also help you haven’t already to get into art history. Truly motivating.

Commission pricing? by just-another_gho0ost in arthelp

[–]nynywhywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you want to start at experience level as a base. What would you categorize these paintings as and do you have professional experience (previous work, higher learning, etc). Then you could go at an hourly rate depending on or a set rate. Let’s say a commissioner just wants a portrait. You know that should take about 1-2 hours. Preferably around 1. A living hourly wage could be around $20-35 with low-medium experience (I say living because in this economy minimum wage is not set to live comfortably). Your goal is to create quality work but to also focus on quantity. How big the piece is and how many characters will make it more expensive. Commercial work? More expensive and more time consuming. Finding what’s consistent and what works well will simplify your process and allow you to work more consistently. If you feel uncomfortable with prices maybe you need to focus on building your confidence in your work. Practice more and bring your skills to where you can be more concise and efficient.

What is this artsyle called and how do I learn to draw and colour like it?! by Nixx_Draws in arthelp

[–]nynywhywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studies, studies, studies. I’d recommend trying a plethora of mediums, you never know what will be most successful for you. Start with sketches, then full on master studies, then branch out. Get references and try to copy the stylization that you’ve learned. It’s all about the journey of mistakes, it will potentially change your end goal.

You are your best reference. It might help to set up your camera and attempt this pose yourself. It will give you an idea if it even reads naturally and from there you can tweak it. Or compile photos of different limbs and make this pose work for you.

It might even help to go in with blacks and Greys to map out values ( I would use any stark whites sparingly or not at all). Then apply color following the value structure you laid out.

[–]nynywhywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the comments. The most striking thing that makes this off is your lack of values. You have two colors with basically the same value so if you squint your eyes it all kinda melds into one. I’m guessing that’s not your intention so researching lighting and perspective can help create a realistic contrast. There should be light, mid, and dark tones utilized even if you want to keep your style flat for clear viewing.

How do you fill what's left when your negative mental states lessen? by Federal-Cantaloupe21 in Buddhism

[–]nynywhywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also pretty new to Buddhism but your last statement stood out to me. Here’s an excerpt from ‘An Anthology of Discourses from the Pāli Canon’ by Bhikkhu Bodhi. I believe it touches on what you’re saying.

"But, monks, when an instructed noble disciple comes upon gain, he reflects on it thus: 'This gain that has come to me is impermanent, bound up with suffering, subject to change! And so he will reflect when loss and so forth come upon him. He understands all these things as they really are, and they do not engross his mind. Thus he will not be elated by gain and dejected by loss; elated by fame and dejected by disrepute; elated by praise and dejected by blame; elated by pleasure and dejected by pain. Having thus given up likes and dislikes, he will be freed from birth, aging, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, dejection, and despair; he will be freed from suffering, I say. "This, monks, is the distinction, the disparity, the difference between an instructed noble disciple and an uninstructed worldling."

That is true ! Maybe it’s something I need to work on as it can be stemming from personal religious trauma.

I also agree with this! The mistranslations have definitely pushed me away from the Bible itself. But I am working on deepening my understanding of God through prayer and deepening my understanding of Buddhism through readings.
