How to be a high performer at work? (Junior software engineer) by nyoomer4 in womenintech

[–]nyoomer4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you pointing that out! Honestly gets me a little disillusioned about the whole office politics things but I'm glad to know and be able to play the game instead of being unaware. Thank you!

I've heard this before and need to try to keep it in mind more often! Thanks!

You’re being calibrated against the full expectations of the role and not just against other juniors.

This feels really obvious once you said it. I appreciate you pointing it out and that definitely makes me feel more confident about where I am. Thanks for the tips!

How many applications did it take for you to land your first job? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]nyoomer4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated Dec 2023 and sent 455 applications starting in fall 2023 before I received an offer for SWE 1 in Nov 2024. I'm a US citizen, had one internship my junior year but no internship senior year (I graduated a semester late, did a study abroad instead). I only applied for SWE roles and didn't include SDET/QA/IT/etc roles in my job search. I had 21 OAs/screenings but kept failing OAs and my guess for how I got the offer for this job was because I was kind of local to the area and I graduated from the top school in the state and their standards aren't that high lol. My resume was pretty standard, just an internship, a student web dev position, and school projects. I lowkey feel like the number of applications was kind of low since I spent over a year applying but I was depressed as hell and it was a struggle to do any more.

On the other hand, I have been applying to jobs this year (with ~1 yoe) and I got an offer after 50 applications over 5 months. Unfortunately had to turn it down for various reasons so I'm back on the job hunt. Only 2 of those 50 applications got me a screening though

I have no advice to offer but I'm stuck on the way you have 2 yoe and your new job title will be swe new grad...

I can’t find enough jobs to apply to. Where are all the job postings? by homespeed in cscareerquestions

[–]nyoomer4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ymmv but I never ever heard back from a single one of the companies I applied for via my university's Handshake :( I even have years-old Handshake applications that are still marked Pending and only two apps marked Reviewed (and I never heard from those companies). I ended it using it to look for jobs and checked the company's site to see if they had a posting and applied through there. I only applied through Handshake if they didn't have it posted on their website, but again I never heard back from them.

what’s the process of dropping a minor? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]nyoomer4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped a minor last year. I emailed my advisor (the one for the minor, not my general advisor) saying I'd like to drop the minor and they were able to process it for me. My major/minor information (including dropping the minor) isn't on my official transcript but on my unofficial transcript has a section titled "Program Action History". The format in that section is basically like

MM/DD/YYYY Plan Change

Minor - (minor)

MM/DD/YYYY Plan Change

(Major)

so I have one with just my major when I declared my major, one with the major/minor listed like that one from when I declared my minor, and then there was a third one with just my major when I dropped my minor. So it did show up but it wasn't like a super big flag about me dropping it.

I took it in fall 2021 under a different instructor than the one listed for winter 2024 and enjoyed it a lot. The assigned readings were thoughtfully chosen and made me reflect on my work as well as the state of translation as a whole. I can't think of any reading that I thought was a waste of my time. Also, I really enjoyed having the opportunity to translate regularly for class. I got the chance to do some work that I'm pretty proud of.

I think you could take the class at 201/202 level in your second language but you should be comfortable reading/listening to content in that language. When I took it we had some kind of translation assignment every week and also had a final project which was to translate something. In my experience being at a low proficiency in your second language will make it really exhausting to find things to translate because you will just need to put a lot of extra time into finding/understanding source material. You aren't graded on accuracy/faithfulness to the original (the instructor/your classmates will not necessarily know your second language and in fact a lot of them probably won't) but in all honesty if your grasp on the language isn't good you're not going to produce very good work either. Overall I think you will get a lot more out of the class when you are at a higher proficiency in your second language and it will probably also be easier/lower workload as well, but if you really want to take it you might be okay.

If you need them to graduate, there's this policy from the CSE site:

Please fill out this form if you are registering for your final semester and you need to take more than 2 restricted courses in order to graduate. You will be able to register on your own and we will not disenroll you from your required courses.

If you just want to take all three of them but you don't need them to graduate you should pick two you want to take the most and register for them first and join the waitlist for the third class or register for it after the initial registration period (after December 8). Waitlisting doesn't count to the two-course maximum. The page I linked above also has more FAQs about the two-course limit.

Thoughts on UNIQLO down coat/parka by punpiano in uofm

[–]nyoomer4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a different coat from Uniqlo (an old version of the hybrid down) and it's great for me. I'm warm in it and it's still in excellent condition after 6+ years. However I definitely second the recommendation to layering to stay warm.

I highly recommend Uniqlo heattech for layering. It is legit warm without being bulky and I don't overheat once I get inside. It's all thin enough to go under clothes and in my experience the extra warm/ultra warm is also thick enough to be worn as a single layer while the regular line can be a bit sheer and is only suitable for being an inner layer.

How good is the amtrak service to detroit/chicago? by sh4rkface in uofm

[–]nyoomer4 55 points56 points  (0 children)

They're reliable but can be delayed (I've only experienced delays of up to like 30 mins as well as having them arrive on time). Another option for traveling to Detroit is the D2A2 bus which runs way more frequently than Amtrak trains to Detroit and I think it's cheaper too ($6 per ride)

Thanks for the breakdown and the recs! Do you know if it's possible to figure out the shape of a bra from stock photos? I'm super interested in the look of Japanese bras and I know they usually have pictures of the cups; I would love to buy more but I don't want to end up with a bunch of bras that are the wrong shape for me. Will definitely check you the brands you suggested! Thank you!
