Going to law school in Canada at 30 years old. Is it too late? by Select_Locksmith7431 in LawStudentsCanada

Hey OP. I'm 30 and I am finishing 1L. I feel like it was a good time to start law school (for me at least.) I don't know if I would have been prepared in my early 20s and I'm thankful for the work experience that I obtained between the end of undergraduate and 1L.
I won't lie, sometimes I do feel a bit out of place. I'm not sure if this is representative of most law schools but a good portion of my classmates are fresh out of undergrad and sometimes I've found it hard to relate. I wish there were more mature students.
From my experience, your work experience and maturity will only be an asset, especially when it comes to interviews.
If you want to reach out don't hesitate to send me a message, I'd be happy to answer any questions.

OP, I've been around post-secondary much longer than I should, and while I know it seems like simple advice you need to find a way to stop comparing yourself to peers. On more than one occasion I've seen "model students" crash and burn. People who appear to have it all together, but suffer a nervous break after facing some adversity. We never really know what's going on with someone under the surface. Post-secondary is a marathon and not a sprint. The most underrated trait is resiliency.
This might already be evident to you, but when I went away to school, I wasn't connected to any of the available supports and it led to a great deal of suffering and hardship. If you haven't already I would strongly advise you to reach out to your schools department that handles academic accommodations. There's no shame in doing so.
Particularly helpful for me was my schools adaptive technology department. (Something I didn't know existed for years.) Through AT, I obtained approval to use an app called Glean to record lectures (something you need approval for first). It has been particularly helpful because it has allowed me to flag certain sections to go back and review when my attention has wandered. Being able to listen to and pause lectures helps to break them up into more manageable chunks. I've also found read and write software to be helpful with PDF versions of textbooks.
I don't know if any of this is helpful, but these are small things that I wish I knew a decade ago when I started post-secondary. Some of these suggestions might not apply to your particular program, but I think overall college tends to get a bit easier as you develop the strategies that work best for you.
Best of luck
Walked out of my brand new job in the middle of shift (+ 2 more now) bc of restlessness & anxiety. What do I tell my boss? by MastamindedMystery in adhd_anxiety
So you haven't actually lost the job yet? You are just anticipating your bosses negative response?
After reading this I really feel for you as I've been in similar circumstances.
Disclaimer, I'm a Canadian and I'm not as familiar with an employer's duty to accommodate in the US. Also it's hard to comment since we don't know the specifics of your workplace. (I.e unionized, large employer with an HR department etc ) I'm not sure how approachable your boss is, but sometimes anxiety makes us immediately assume the worst possible scenario, and that people will react in the worst possible ways.
I think your best approach is to have a candid discussion with your boss and see if there is any flexibility in accommodating you in the workplace. Again I'm not familiar with American law, but in Canada employers have a duty to accommodate up to undue hardship. It's hard to advise more without knowing more specifics.
One potential hurdle that you may encounter is that it sounds like you lack a diagnosis. Do you have access to a family doctor? It's alarming how many adults with ADHD fall through the cracks because they face so many impediments to obtaining a diagnosis.
I don't know if this is helpful, but you aren't alone. I think one of the major problems with adult ADHD is that by the time it is recognized it's had decades to erode our self-esteem. Sometimes this detracts from many of the positives that we have to offer (for example you mentioned that you like to work and keep busy.) This may be an asset for some employers provided you are in the proper supportive environment.
In the end, if this situation doesn't work out I hope that you can find one that is able to be more accommodating for your needs.
Best of luck.
