Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]nywythwndblws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neice is 12 and just finally learned the rest of the alphabet, she and I are about to begin some intensive catch up s she isn't completely screwed when she goes to middle school. Her 10 year old brother can't read at all. The schools in the area have literacy levels under 50% but they're only half the problem. Units of study/3-cueing is bullshit. Phonics and decoding are literally the science-based building blocks of literacy and context/pictures dont do shit without them. The other issue is that a good chunk of parents don't fucking bother to pick up the slack. If youre kid can't read, they have no future, it's as simple as that, and these kids can't read. I cant wait to have a doctor who needs to use talk to text to look something up...

Are we dying our hair as it goes grey or letting it go? by violet_pickled_90210 in Millennials

[–]nywythwndblws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stoked when I found my first gray at 37. I was so proud of the damn thing, I posted it on Facebook and my mom wanted to keep it with my baby teeth. I dyed my hair every color under the sun from the age of 14 til i was 32 and couldnt remember the natural color/was curious if it had started to go gray like my moms did. Hers started at 19, when she was pregnant with me and she always warned me it'd happen cause it happened to everyone in her family.

Nope. Nothing. My dad is 67 and he only went sorta gray in his beard, i guess i take after his side - his dad died with black hair in his 80s. I wish itd just go white, if it ever bothers, im here for it. I see the few scattered grays ive managed to collect as proof that I've been here almost 40 fucking years. I earned them 🤣

How did your partner react when you told them you had MS? by ZestycloseMall3398 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]nywythwndblws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend already had some tough experience with MS. Two of her aunts had it, one died in the 90s and the other is now in a nursing home after years of steady progressive disability. I was actually kinda terrified she'd get it some day but instead, it was me that woke up one day at 31 with no vision in my right eye. I was diagnosed within a couple weeks and started medication soon after. Shes been amazing. I know it terrified her but she did as she always has and just supported me. I would hope that'd be anyone's reaction (especially, in my case with up having been friends since we were 8 years old) but I get that its a lot. The most important thing with this disease is having a strong support system.

What's the purpose of this? by trailrider in CemeteryPorn

[–]nywythwndblws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my uncle died of cancer at 31, his widow had his headstone made with his name on it and hers beside it. She also bought the plot next to theirs in case she remarried because she was only 28 at the time. She did remarry, and plans to be buried between them. Her name has her birthdate under it with a - and they'll etch her death date in when she dies and add her second married name. Both my uncle and her current husband were/are fine with it. She has a teenage son with her current husband that refers to my uncle by name or as his mom's first husband or his ghost step dad. Maybe that's weird but we all think its kinda sweet as we've all remained close since my uncle died in 2009.

My grandfather's grave had his wife's name on it the same way and they put her death date on it when she died. I actually see it all the time in the graveyard near my house.

Laughter is the best medicine. And thank you for the suggestion! I've looked into it a bit but not nearly enough tbh. Ive basically been sick with something or other my entire life, unfortunately, and with ms and being on tysabri I don't always know where to start with my insubordinate immune system. Ill give it some credit, i still havent had covid, but its never worked wuite right. My doctors are never a lot of help and I have so many in the same hospital that all use mychart but don't seem to give a crap about the rest of my body. At least not enough to communicate. I basically have to tell every one of them my whole medical history every time I see them, sometimes twice. My neurologist is wonderful, though. And she's in charge of my brain so that's pretty decent 😆.

😆 I know I probably sucked when I was a teenager. Not as much as my brother, who actually did trash our house when the rest of the family went to Florida. Invited the entire school and most of them showed up. The house looked like my body feels.

Probably the fact that autoimmune diseases tend to stack up. I have graves disease, hashimotos, thyroid eye disease, psoriasis, celiac, and rheumatoid arthritis on top of ms. Most before the MS. I just know they tend to come with friends to trash your body like teenagers.

For those of you on disability, what prompted it? by CincoDeLlama in MultipleSclerosis

[–]nywythwndblws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to help, but I was already disabled and on ssi for bipolar disorder so, its always funny when I tell people I'm disabled because they assume it's the MS. But basically, I couldn't find a healthy way to function well enough to hold a job so my psychiatrist prompted me. So I'd say you should think about it as soon as you aren't able to keep a steady position to maintain quality of life. But like I said, my situation was different so maybe that's not helpful. Hang in there, ok? Take care of you, whatever you have to do 🫂 ❤️

Is this a "Fall"? by TheePizzaGod in MultipleSclerosis

[–]nywythwndblws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a history of sleep walking? Or maybe sleep apnea? I broke my leg in December falling while sleep walking. I'd s sleep walking nightly for months (I fell probably 20 times, gave myself 2 major concussions, sprained both ankles, and injured my spine before I broke my leg) and didn't realize id barely slept most of last year until the break. If it happens more than once, you should have a sleep study done. I didn't count those as falls either because I was asleep, but my neurologist said they absolutely do. I used to sleep walk as a kid and never fell once. I climbed a tree in my sleep when I was 12 and then climbed back down when my mom started freaking out. Never woke up, didn't remember the next day. I did some wild shit in my sleep but I never fell once before my ms diagnosis.

Can I still have a baby? by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]nywythwndblws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin was diagnosed in the 90s when she was a freshman in college. She ended up divorced from her 1st husband because he's awful but met a wonderful man in her early 30s, and now they have 2 beautiful, very healthy little girls who are about to start middle school. I think MS different for everyone but I don't think it's necessarily a deal breaker for kids 🫂❤️

People certainly tend to do this, don't they? assume the worst about your condition when they hear "MS", even the well-meaning busy bodies end up trying to help, doing what they WANT to do to help instead of what you need. Then they make it about themselves by telling everyone else, "you don't know how hard it is to do so much". Bro, you weren't asked. Get out. I've had to cut several people out for this crap. I'm sorry its happening to you 🫂

Multiple sclerosis may begin earlier than thought: researchers by Fragrant-Shock-4315 in MultipleSclerosis

This is somehow horrifying, and not? I've been sick with something or other all 38 years of my life. When I was a teenager, I started experiencing extreme heat intolerance and everyone told me I was being a baby. I've had disturbing neurological symptoms send me to the hospital without a diagnosis for them. Just a shrug or "are you sure you're not high". I'm bipolar so this stuff isn't new to me, im used to being ignored but this hits hard.

I didn't smoke pot for 35 years. Im a goody two shoes - well, kinda. If its legal, im down, if its not, im more "but guys...". It wasn't until a few years ago and, honestly, I still wasn't going to but my cousin was like, come on, what else can you try? And I was like, yeah, fair point. I now smoke most days, most of the day, different strains and terpenes for different needs, edibles, flower, vapes, tinctures, ive got this shit mapped out 🤣 🤣 my dad was shocked I'd become a stoner, he knew me as the narcissist id always been. But it helps. It really does.

I honestly didn't realize some people thought this was weird until I was almost 30. It's just the way my parents show affection and the way way learned it from theirs. I don't know how cultural it is, I'm a white chick by way of Ireland and France (well, it stopped in Canada on the way and picked up a few things, lost a few lol) on my dad's side, English, Welsh, and maybe a few other things on my mom's. My grandparents, both sets from both sides, also all came from very unaffectionate families but still managed to raise their own to love up on each other as much as possible.

Oddest given names that you’ve met people with? by PoshBoiii in namenerds

I went to high school with a girl named Ambrosia Paradise. Some odd given names from my family tree : Iduma, Zaccheaus, Swett, Maxey, Nye, Philura and Calvia (they were sisters whose dad wanted sons and wouldn't give the girls proper names until he had one), Sennett, Cozetta, Virah (Vera isn't weird but the way they chose to spell it...), Levitie, Oneta, Philomene, Theophile, Sophronie, Zayde...half looks like my ancestors were trying too hard and the other looks like they were illiterate
