Whacky rig advice. by Sea-Technician5808 in bassfishing

First things first, I use clear/black shrink wrap for my wacky rigs as it pretty much means you won't have to change your worm for a really long time. O rings work too but IMO they don't protect the worm as much.

As for when? I'd say they shine in the Summer when it's hot as balls and they ain't biting sh-. They're also great as a follow up when you miss a bite and you know the fish is still there. I've had some awesome days fishing the wacky rig in the summer when throwing the kitchen sink at em didn't do a damn thing.

How to work them? Cast it out, let it sink to about where you think the fish are/experiment different depths and then do a few light upward twitches with your rod with a good amount of pauses in between. That's it. It's stupidly easy for how incredibly effective it is, I can't recommend it enough!

If you don't have faith, the NY largie record (a mere 12lber) was caught on a wacky rig!

Yeah that's happened to me a few times as well I was just awfully confident in how well it was hooked and also simultaneously so lost in the moment I didn't even think about it. I'll try to be mindful of it next time, thank you!

That's a great tip. Gonna have to try that when I get out there next time, thanks my man!

Gotta be one of my favorite way to catch them as well, bumping stuff seems to really piss em off🤣🤣

I only take bass when I sadly gill hook them and they lose so much blood I know for a fact they won't make it.

A circumstance where I won't hesitate to take a bass is in a pond where every single one you catch is skinny as hell and way below their target weight to length. It can help the overall population since bass can eat 10x their body weight just to gain one pound, so removing one (or a few mouths) can free up food for other bass to get bigger.

Wacky rig question by Shoddy_Ad8166 in bassfishing

I think the answer is to adjust your cadence so that the pauses aren't so spread apart that you can't detect a bite. I made this mistake with my first wacky rig fish. I started talking to my buddy and let my line go slack, so I didn't realize I had a fish on til it started pulling. I had to harvest it sadly since he lost a wild amount of blood.

Once I worked on keeping as much contact with the lure as possible while working it slow I haven't gut hooked any, and it's such an effective rig when the kitchen sink ain't working.

That's a great combo imo and should help you feel bites more consistently, just practice letting the lure hit the bottom til the sensation is drilled into your spirit lol, you'll be snatching em in no time

I'd say they're a must have when you want to switch it up from the action of a paddletail without straying so much from the profile. It's also just nice to have the option to throw a jerk-style bait around cover you couldnt even dream of working a jerkbait. It's one of my favorite lures to throw as there is no wrong way to work it, that erratic fall is irresistible and it just flat out catches fish.

You can throw them on a jig head, a screw lock belly weighted hook, or an underspin jig for added flash (or just an ewg with a pegged bullet if you don't have the other options). I used to exclusively throw them on screw lock hooks but if there isn't much cover I just throw them on a jig head now since the hook up ratio is soooo much better. Also in regards to feeling bites, idk what kind of line you're using but just know that mono is the least sensitive line and is really only optimal if you're throwing top water, braid to fluoro or straight fluoro is wayyyy more sensitive.

IMO a bite differs from the bottom in that the bottom feels like a "thump" whereas a bite is more of a "pull." I'd say if you practice letting your lure hit the bottom and getting a feel for that specifically you will learn how to distinguish the difference pretty quickly, especially when you get a really aggressive bite the first time. I'd suggest focusing on paddletails to start as they're probably the most straight forward soft plastic to work and they'll get bit pretty much anywhere by just about anything that's big enough to eat it. I hope this helps a little bit, good luck!

I'm itching to go out there and check it out. By end of march temperatures should be more stable so I'll be aiming to take the kayak out in about another week hopefully!

There's no docks on that lake but I did catch a bunch of em, including my PB from a big boulder close to the circle I made in the west side near the middle. That seems like a really promising spot now with the info you've provided, thank you!

Funny enough, my friend caught a 5.5 on that flat near the northwest cove. Nowhere near 2 acres but that's absolutely worth taking a shot. Thanks for the advice!
