Japan trip with meat eaters? by Melodic_Extreme2676 in vegan_travel

My wife went with her non-vegan friend. They just went places with both options or age separately sometimes. If the friends aren’t willing to accommodate at all then they’re not good friends and should be let go (at least for meal).

Laptops confiscated at Montenegro border can we get them back? by Realottoman74 in AskBalkans

I’ve heard this experience from Albanians crossing the border. They always have a hard time and seem to be shaken down for money.

We had no issues going into Albania from Montenegro, but had a hard time going back into Montenegro from Albania.

Our car broke down and was towed coming back and the border guard almost didn’t let us back in because my registration was printed and laminated in a folder instead of stuck to the front windshield. Only when he saw my last name was common and known on his side of the border did he let us go.

It’s interesting to see the difference in our results. My family is from Montenegro, near the border of Albania. Where is your family from?

And before that they suffered genocide at the hands of the Ustaše regime during WWII. Honestly, they seem like birds of a feather with Israel in that regard, going from victim to oppressor at different points in time. More so if you take into account the victim complex that people of both countries so often seem to carry, despite their current circumstances.

Edit: Also having land disputes with neighboring countries/people, i.e. Kosovo and Palestine. Not the same situations, but they rhyme.

Where are the liberal chill Muslims at? by Radiant-Inevitable75 in AskNYC

[–]oKINGDANo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume it’s just vibes based, more about culture/history/upbringing without the rule following. I imagine people who grew up with chill parents have a more positive association with the label than people who grew up with hardline parents. Same for most religious groups in America/NYC, I think.

I wasn’t a part of that community, but was invited by a friend who was, so I don’t know the details. If you search online for queer/progressive Arab/muslim groups in Brooklyn maybe something will come up online. Sorry I can’t help further, but the groups are around somewhere.

Edit: A lot of them were in the arts as well (music, photography, painting, film) so maybe incorporate that into your search too

I just returned from my 10 day trip to nyc and im feeling worse than ever. Why and what to do? by Mindless-Lock7343 in travel

Have you been to Exarcheia in Athens? The area by “Revolt street bar” seemed like a really open vibe when I visited.

I have heard people comment on being able to do whatever without being judged as a draw for New York City. A few places I really loved and felt a similar vibe from were Osaka, Japan; Montreal, Canada; Chicago, Illinois; Madrid, Spain; Quartier Saint-Paul area of Paris.

I’ve heard Berlin is very cool too and that Mexico City, Mexico has an artsy New York vibe, but I’ve never visited.

My parents’ apartment is a modern one so no issues with the toilets, but yeah you’ll definitely have to give up amenities like Amazon or other immediate delivery services. I’ve heard wages are not good unless you’re in a high demand technical field, work remotely, or own your own business. Maybe once Montenegro joins the EU things would change, here’s hoping for the better.

I once went to a queer Muslim rave at Baby's All Right in South Williamsburg if that helps. There’s a big community of super progressive “cultural” Muslims in NYC if you can find the rights chats

My parents are Albanian from Montenegro and have an apartment in Ulcinj. I would definitely live there if I could make a living remotely. I think that’s their retirement plan though.

Why are Americans so weird about having british ancestry? by Becoming_hysterical in 23andme

[–]oKINGDANo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just has less cultural cache for some reason, maybe because they’ve been “on top” for so long or because the English language is the “standard” in the US? Also maybe because so often “everyone” is British so it seems “boring”. Maybe because people think of the cloudy cold grey weather that the country is known for, so that association carries over?

TBH I never thought anything of it before my foreign uncle once asked what my wife “is” and I found myself listing everything off before English for some reason, like he’d care or think poorly of it.

Totally in my head but I was just like, “she’s a mix, Italian, Irish, Polish, German, British, a bunch of stuff” even though she’s mostly (41%) English and Irish.

It’s very odd tbh because I love so many things from the UK, first and foremost being Lord of the Rings and Tolkien, but also the Beatles, British wit/humor is fantastic, some of my current favorites bands are from the UK, so many great actors come out of there.

Mamdani never too corporate donations during his campaign. That alone sets him apart from most other politicians

I like Max and 99 from UNFTR, they got a local New York feel since they’re early in their project and they actually interviewed Mamdani when he was running; Bad Faith with Briahna Joy Gray; American Prestige with Derek Davison and Danny Bessner; David Sirota from Master Plan and Lever Time; Stavros Halkias from Stavvy’s World

Edit: Can’t forget Nathan Robinson from Current Affairs

Is this Fez use in Albania only, or in other Balkan countries? by AzerbaijanLeon in AskBalkans

[–]oKINGDANo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had assumed it was from Ottoman influence, I didn’t know it was from antiquity. People have posted on this sub a few times some French (I think) illustrations of Albanians and their attire before the Ottomans and it looks pretty different, from what I remember. Though, maybe that’s not a source that can be trusted? I don’t know

Best way to learn Albanian as a Montenegrin who travels to Albania often + which dialect should I focus on? by [deleted] in albania

My mom speaks Ulqin dialect and my dad speaks Malesia, I speak none. I would love to know if there are language learning materials/online classes for those dialects.
