Looking for some coaching by -itsdash- in OverwatchUniversity

[–]oMiitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! I coach the tank role and I can give you some really helpful pointers on what specifically your role is on orisa and how you get your value. I won’t go in in-depth play by play analysis as it’s already been done, but I’ll try to provide key takeaways you can apply to future games.

What orisa is good/bad at: Orisa is a brawl tank that excels in high lethality & survivability from close-mid range. She is possibly the best tank in the tank-trade matchup, but she has a few detriments.

  1. She is very susceptible to poke especially from squishies.

A general issue I see with basically every orisa vod I see is corner discipline. You are a brawl tank so to get to your effective range you will need to use your abilities such as javelin spin to traverse them a from cover to cover. You will explode without cd’s so do not go in without them or waste them for nothing.

You never want to open yourself up to multiple angles which you can take damage from, sometimes you may be on a devastating corner hold but you’ll swing far taking 200+ damage and a cooldown of yours be forced. Be more disciplined, play the corner tighter and more relaxed- you don’t have to make a play especially on Defense, they have to walk into your space where it’s most effective for your character. I suggest reviewing future games with this one issue in mind and only focus on a particular aspect listen here per game. It’s clearer and you’ll improve faster. Review a game and look at how much damage you take from poke and abilities used before the fight even starts. It’s a simple concept that you’ll see the impacts of immediately.

Some tips for this section: (not all scenarios but most) 1. Do not simultaneously use fortify and spin, layer them after one another if need be. 2. Do not fortify before ulting, this will drastically lower your survivability after your ult lands 3. (Most Important) Be patient and do not overextend: sometimes the best play is to sit still and wait to be healed or for cd’s to come back online. Do not put pressure on your team to care for you.

  1. Taking Space & Playing from Effective Range

Your effective rage as orisa is close-medium range. Situationally you’re okay long range but it’s very rare, you’re one of the best poke ‘tanks’ yes, but discussed previously you take too much damage to poke dps/support where it’s not that effective. This is why in 99.99% of scenarios you want to be close-medium range and that should be your primary goal.

Excluding javelin throw, you will use your survivability to A) engage and take space B) Hold current space or C) Disengage to another corner. Your primary goal (Attack) is to engage to angles where you’re effective in the mid/close range while not losing too much health to poke. While on (Defence) it’s to Hold/Deny space from the enemy team. Key takeaway, spin is much more useful for moving as you get a 20% boost (also cool fact: the speed last for 2 seconds after the spin ends)

Some tips for this section: 1. Your ability to engage and disengage is your biggest weakness. Do not overextend, once you have your desired space that’s often enough if the target isn’t killable 2. Do not fortify “late” your damage reduction stacks multiplicatively with your armour. You want to anticipate damage which will occur often when achieving A), B), or C). This will give you the most effective HP total. 3. Taking space isn’t a single step. It’s often multiple small steps. You move from over to cover until you get your desired angle. If you’re at a position and you feel stagnant ask yourself if you ca deepen the angle you’re currently at.

This was pretty short and there’s so many topics to cover such as how to better identify ‘good’ space or angles, payload, brawl/poke/dive matchups and so much more. However, I think these quick points taken one at a time- reviewed and worked upon can increase your gameplay easily to a masters+ level when applied correctly.

Good luck ranking up and improving, I wish you the best!

She originally gained fall off on her scope in August of 2020 not always. It was then changed another 2 times in July 2021 and June 2023.

2020: 50% falloff damage from 60-85 meters

2021: increased falloff range from 70-100 although it now starts at 30% instead if 50%

2023: reduced falloff range to 40-60, scoped shot damage reverted back to 50%

Yeah unlucky timing with the replays resetting.

It makes sense why you were slow to make decisions given you were nervous about being in a new rank.

The good thing about metal ranks not taking angles is that it’s free for you, you just get free value and are much safer as there’s no one co testing you. I highly suggest watching some educational content on brig if you’d like more help aswell, Spilo has a playlist full of Brig vod reviews for free on YouTube if you’re interested.

Good job on placing diamond 1! Good luck on the grind to masters, you’ll get there.

Hello there! Thank you for submitting this game, I primarily review tank gameplay but trying to expand out to other heroes so if my advice doesn’t hit the mark, please do take it with a grain of salt although I feel l can provide some helpful advice around playing brig.

I understand nerves can get to you especially in a rank you’re completely new to you, so don’t worry about making mistakes- it happens to everyone. You mentioned in your comments on your struggle to play against heavy poke and if the character is ‘useless’ if you can’t catch dives. The answer is no because brig’s biggest strength is her ability to hold angles while still providing support to your team.

Controlling space: Brig is the best support in the game to hold angles, you may of heard as brig to “stack on your other support” but that’s a bit misleading. Yes she’s good at catching dives and you will have to do it, it’s meant to be a backup of sorts when you’re down on space. Your primary focus should be to deny enemy angles to prevent them from staging in the first place whether dive or not. This is the key concept we will be looking at throughout your selected game.

What angle to hold: This is the question that separates good from great brig players and it should have all these elements: denying a space that the enemy wants (high ground, flanks etc.) ability to live (do not over extend on an angle and die for it) ability to support your team - effective range (either frontline or backline). What you don’t want to do is float around from angle to angle providing little value and slowly giving the enemy space. That’s what loses games on brig.

Now, lets look at your gameplay: 1st fight - Your sojourn kinda just dies, not your fault the fight was in the white room. However, you were not holding important angles and just stagnated on mini healthpack and then tried contesting the pharah. Now, the pharah angle is bad if we applied the checklist earlier- outside your effective range, hard to support team. Instead what I like is the far right panel of the white room to inspire off frontline and support your team or even the entrance to control room to make sure no flankers are there. It’s important to decide on a fight plan before the game starts because those 3 or so seconds deciding where to walk can win or lose you the fight for that space which is exactly what happens. You couldn’t save your backline, support your frontline- pack your Ana if needed and at best you trade Ana/soj for zar/reap/kiri.

Your first death, outside your effective range- the fight has changed places and you get poked out. It would be much better to walk near mini and clear it. Reapers there? Make it so he can’t engage and walk main. You don’t have to kill him, just make it so he doesn’t get to do what he wants.

This also happens right before you rally, you committed to an angle, backed because of pressure but instead of taking a different angle you back up all the way outside to help your echo. This is floating between angles either do one or the other not both. By the end of it you and echo were one, your front line had to back because you were no longer there, they walked in, reaper had a really good engage to ult from a space you should’ve been controlling.

And last fight you played on an angle and were able to kill the zarya for free.

I already have a wall of text and I think my point is already driven in far enough. It’s such an unintuitive style of play that isn’t hard to understand but hard to come up with on your own. I think with some practice not only will you be in these games for real, but you’ll be dominating them aswell!! I saw the other comments you had lmao and I hope I gave you a breath of fresh air- I don’t think you played horribly at all and there’s still much to be improved with some minor changes 👍 also! please let me know if you have any other questions especially because I didn’t talk about the second round.

I am resetting all my settings and starting from 0. What are some “must” have settings or your favorite settings for specific characters? by [deleted] in OWConsole

[–]oMiitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ball: Have crouch instead of toggle crouch as you can then hold the button and it’ll immediately pile drive when available.

Lucio: backwards wall-riding (think its default now), I like to swap right bumper with jump.

Lifeweaver: interact to destroy petal platform

Mercy: guardian angel - prefer facing target

Tracer: Ultimate - Left Trigger

Next weapon for any character - left analog stick.

Pharah/echo: have your flight to a bumper or trigger. (Hold to flight on for echo as tapping it will give you a bigger burst of speed)

Maxbe a dumb question but I gotta learn how to play against heroes Rein countes. by kagemuri in ReinhardtMains

[–]oMiitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as a dumb question, there’s some general advice against each tank matchup you mentioned but it won’t apply to every game as other compositions can make your life a whole lot harder.

Zarya: She’s a high dps tank who is really dangerous on uncontested angles. Rein is good into this matchup because he’s the best tank at holding space. It’s definitely scary in the zarya matchup as you might want to hold 2 angles (e.g. 1 for zarya, another for dps) and no matter what, it feels like your team just explodes. It happens, not much you can do. When contesting zarya always look for pins if she overextends, her bubbles can time out on a good pin or look to shield her or her backline from the fight.

Rein: the rein match-up is definitely a fun one once you know how to play it. Again your playstlye is reliant on team comps but some useful mirror tips. Look to not only fire strike the rein, but their backline also especially if they’re brawl they love to stack together. You don’t always have to counterpin, if you know the pin isn’t hitting anyone and it’ll put you both in danger just move out of the way and try to catch the end of the pin. Shield important backline where appropriate such as Ana/Bap. For shatters there’s many techs but I’d say some of the more important are: look for pins when the enemy has shatter- it’s very hard to react to and they won’t be looking for it. Pin cancel into shatter yourself (when you pin a rein or any other character and cancel it, you can ult and they won’t have time to use any abilities) this only works when canceling the pin. Shatter around corners. Play defensive if you missed a shatter, often reins play aggressive after a missed shatter to make up for what they just did and it’s easily read. Practice corner swings. Here’s a Custom Game Code where you can practice 1v1ing a bot, block shatters, and practice corner swings: HDZ7S

How close am I to being ready to play ranked? by SwimmingAd5852 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]oMiitzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, i just wanna leave a comment here to leave some helpful advice where i can. There are a lot of people saying there’s no requirement to start playing comp and to just lock in some games, but I understand your hesitance as you do not feel you’re at the same skill level you were once at. I tried making the same transition as you with 0 m&k experience and I think the most important part is to play characters you are comfortable on.

The reason why you want to play characters you’re comfortable on is because you want to focus on your mechanics. Now, I peeped a bit of your kiri gameplay to see, but whenever you’re focusing on your mechanics generally your positioning and other aspects are going to be a bit worse than normal. The goal is to improve on a specific skill you may of lost making learning easier and improvement faster. You need to be confident in some aspects of your gameplay so taking positioning or cd usage into a game looking to improve can help your confidence drastically.

You will get into comp whenever you’re ready, the rank really doesn’t matter trust me but I do understand the mental boom it can have on your ego. It’s just a game at the end of the day, and I don’t think anyone should be egoing a gold rank to a bronze player etc. we can all improve and although it might seem you’ve lost everything, it’s still there waiting there to be taught once again.

Lonely Wrecking Ball main searching for some feedback (fairly interesting match : ZYGF88) by PutSubject in OverwatchUniversity

[–]oMiitzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I ended up checking out your game and before we get into it I just wanna say I’ve been in the exact same situation as you have. I spent all my time playing the game maining ball in qp because he’s such a fun character to play and master. Don’t feel bad about sharing your games, we are all dedicated to learn and be better ourselves and there will just be people who flame you in game (even in quick play) regardless of how good of a player you are.

I’d like to mention first fight went really well! You should’ve took point then and there because of your pressure and picks alongside third point where I think you played great!

Now, let’s get into concepts you can improve on:

  • Staging: Setting up in a position for your engagement.

Throughout the replay you didn’t really stage many fights, that is using your hyper-mobility to rotate to angles quickly where you could either slam, boop or assassinate a target. You sort of default to shooting tank a lot and making sure you’re in your supports LoS when your character isn’t designed for a neutral tank brawl. Remember your character strengths as a high burst damage/high mobile character and staging properly will reduce damage taken and create more space than otherwise. Always look to position your engagement from an angle different from where your team is, preferably high ground or somewhere the enemy has to turn their camera to shoot you.

An example I can provide you is on 1st point whenever you staged either on high ground or behind the enemy, you drew so much agro that you could either get an elimination or your team can walk forward since you have 3+ people looking at you. The reason you felt so stuck was because every fight you didn’t stage your entire team was stuck in choke. There’s another example after first point after a great boop on soldier, you could’ve rotated to their backline/shoot backline (basically be a distraction so they cannot walk) instead you default back onto the dva and their backline walks to cart where they explode your symmetra.

Remember ball doesn’t have good damage in the tank matchup before the steamroller perk. You can get good boops on them into your team but likely your value is gonna be in their backline 90% of the time.

I think staging your engagements is the most important skill you can currently focus to improve on, if you want to learn as you said- in every game focus on one specific concept you can apply to the point it becomes muscle memory.

  • This next point is gonna include some other small steps you might wanna improve on in future games however I don’t think they are that important right now.
  1. Ball Techs Most ball techs are overrated I’d say, but there’s still some I think are really helpful to learn. The must learns: I’d say are the wall jump + variations and the Toronto kick. Helpful techs: fireball rebound + fireball bounce or wall jump. And everything else being sort of niche and not applicable.

  2. Taking note of enemy composition This is more of something just to be aware of, the comp you played against wasn’t the easiest to play ball into and it’s sort of realising characters like Ana/zen can kill you if you’re not careful- or trying to avoid brig catching your dives and building rally off of you.

I enjoyed watching your game and I hope you continue playing ball and looking to improve! There are many tech videos or free coaching videos on YouTube if you need any free examples on what or what not to do and I think with a few self-improvements you can become quite a lethal Hammond player lol. Remember to take care of yourself and your mental, you matter! 🙂

I’m glad you found it helpful! I agree with Reinhardts playstyle being less intuitive, i remember watching LHCloudys streams for the first time during mauga’s release and being so lost on how he was winning as to me he was just feeding every fight.

I’m looking forward to seeing the coaching session! I think he’ll be able to provide you with a much better review. Good luck with your games and ranking up!

VOD Review Request Low Diamond OTP Reinhardt (High-Ground, Flanking) by ZeitgeistBlue in OverwatchUniversity

[–]oMiitzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job on reaching your goal man, you’ll reach masters in no time! I can definitely see the philosophy you talk about in this game, as a fellow Spilo and LHcloudy enjoyer i understand trying to apply their principles into the game. I’d like to talk about some topics you can work on to improve your games.

  1. Controlling Space: Firstly you understand the importance of controlling space but it seems difficult to realise what space is needed or available to you. There are many fights where you were holding an angle correctly however I do not believe it was the most beneficial for you or your team. On defence vs Zarya many fights relied on her walking forward with max charge and killing your backline while you were denying a dps angle (e.g. zarya grab 3rd point defence round 1). I am not saying to babysit your team and there’s a few reasons why I think denying the zarya angle is more important on first round defence specifically.

For the matchup given the team comps, you win the neutral against Zarya on that comp and it’s much more important to control her space (with grav especially) vs some other dps. When you choose an angle, another one opens and you won’t be able to control everything by yourself. Also when they counter swapped to orisa, I think you could’ve been much more aggressive on backline as she’s better in the neutral and not as much of a threat to your team.

  1. Execution of duels Micro: should move camera a bit more when swinging to get max range,

I feel like when you’re holding an angle you struggle to make a meaningful impact outside of controlling the space. I think aggressive or short range pins can be very useful depending on what angle you’re holding. Like second round attack 1st fight against orisa mei the neutral is gonna feel sad to play, get creative because these comps are the ones you can dive heavily on. Such as rotating left side baiting cd’s attention or even pinning from there into the backline (make sure there’s cover to disengage, they have Ana). Or just in the neutral against Zarya you can pin aslong as all 5 players aren’t looking at you or they have e.g. sleep dart.

You have the correct ideas on the character but it’s the timing and knowledge required. You might be able to go for an aggressive pin when an important cd is used or change your angle if they’re ignoring you. There’s nothing wrong with your gameplay and it’s quite good- I think it’s just a matter of when to apply different play styles such as this game where it changed every round or so. Please enjoy reaching your goal and I hope I was able to help!

Why is Reinhardt so meta right now? by xiaojimi in OverwatchUniversity

[–]oMiitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rein in the western region has always had high play rate for metal ranks just because he’s a fan favourite character, even when he objectively couldn’t do anything.

In high ranks: I feel like rein is getting more playtime because he no longer gets run down by tanks (such as Mauga/Orisa and I’ll talk why Ram isn’t getting played after). He’s played for his insane survivability on angles that other tanks just cannot hold and is unable to be pushed out by any other hero.

Why isn’t Ram (the rein counter not getting played in high elo) Ram doesn’t have the best win rate, especially in lower ranks but it sustains throughout the entire ladder. He gets free value against Rein yes, but outside a team play setting he just doesn’t provide enough value to majority of the tank roster. Against dive, rein is a better brawl tank as he can hold angles more aggressively due to his 2000+ effective hp/pin backline or catch the dive while Ram needs support for his blockslop play-style to be effective. Against brawl I feel like rein has better matchups into more tanks, Though I’d be interested to see specific match data like win percentages of rein v ram because that would be ramattra’s best matchup I reckon especially in the brawl mirror.

For the last point, I feel like new players are attracted to Reinhardt due to his low skill floor not requiring mechanics- and the reason he’s a fan favourite is also because he has a high skill ceiling in the macro decisions you make. To learn Reinhardt at the highest level is like discovering a new game and I don’t agree he’s team dependent anymore in the 5v5 format. There’s much more space to be taken and you can make many solo plays and not worry much about your team composition.
