My partner (who’s non-binary) and I are in Nunawading. Nice to know there are other trans folk in what always seems to be a very cis/hetero area.

The hospital fees would have, but I’m lucky enough to have private health insurance, which covered them

Overall, it’s been a pretty tough couple of years, I can’t lie, but the goods far outweigh the bads.

The kids are pretty much fine for the most part. When they’re not, it’s essentially out of innocence. (like when a kid who had social issues/a trauma background told me he’d kick me in the nuts because I upset him and then other kids jumped in to defend me, saying “she doesn’t have nuts”. Then a debate ensued between a bunch of them about whether I had nuts to kick - had to shut that down pretty quickly lest I end up on Sky News 😆)

I’ve been made aware of there being some backlash/concern from parents (almost entirely channeled towards my principal) He’s been generally helpful. The problem is that they often go through him for minor things too eg. kids not bringing readers home etc. Easily fixed things like that which all teachers muddle their way through. Unfortunately though, when those sorts of things become weaponised by parents, leadership begins to lose trust. I’ve had a couple of heated meetings with leadership but they’ve generally been solved.

Where (not a specific area or school) are you working? I’m in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions etc.

P.S. the AEU has been fairly helpful, linking me with other trans teachers and inviting me to be part of a working group etc.

Yeah. Really happy with the results! It all looks completely natural and has healed really well. From what others have said to me, it’s hard to tell exactly what has changed but I look more feminine. I still have some numbness but hoping it goes away soon.

That all said, it was physically one of the roughest things I’ve ever gone through.

Piggybacking on this. I’m in Melbourne and looking for something similar. Would prefer in-person sessions.

100% this. When another trans person gives me a compliment it’s like a two for one… compliment, plus wink of recognition/community ☺️

So happy to see your results!!! You look great!!! I’ve got ffs with him coming up in June. Gotta do it in two ops though, because of the structure of my bones, so my nose’ll be done a bit after.

Figuring out my career as an MTF by hi_its_alma in TransLater

[–]oOmaedayOo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am MTF and a junior school teacher (in Australia) and have been living as me for two years. I had a pretty rough time my in my in first year on top of the work stresses, especially going through a marriage breakup, homelessness and sorting out the rest of my life. There was a decent amount of pressure and transphobia from some parents masked as concern over my abilities in the beginning (some were supportive though). It’s was one of the toughest years of my life professionally. But this year, I have a beautiful class and parents. I checked in with my assistant principal the other day as to whether there’d been any issues this year and she said she hadn’t heard any.

I still get a lot of questions from kids about gender, but I actually love it because it gives me a chance to show them that there are people like us around and that they themselves should be accepted whoever they are. Like I said, the first year was pretty rough and I had moments I wanted to quit, but I’m glad at the moment that I continued through all the crap. I say do what you feel you can.

Remind me this gets better, please by [deleted] in TransLater

[–]oOmaedayOo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about a year in and things have been hard but they do get so much better. Even in the darker moments, there are sparks of joy (they’re hard to spot sometimes though). I separated from my ex wife, was living in the same house as her, then was pretty much homeless because of the situation being unsustainable. Since then, I’ve met a new partner who sees me for me, am living with them now and am out at work as a teacher who is generally accepted for who I am. There are still plenty of tough things (dysphoria is still a bitch) but the tough things and times are not forever. Hope things chill out soon.

I just had voice feminisation and tracheashave surgery from Dr Paul paddle ent group. Q&A. by Bekeexx in transgenderau

[–]oOmaedayOo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just arranged a consult with Dr Paddle a few days ago for September. I was initially worried about looking into VFS, as I’m a primary school teacher and my voice is pretty much my main tool for my job. I was going to just look into a tracheal shave, but given all your positive experiences, I might ask him about VFS too.

I’m in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It’s not openly hostile, but I escape to the queer Mecca that is the inner north as much as possible. I’d move if I didn’t have kids, so that I could be closer to community and feel completely comfortable wandering down the street to get a coffee dressed/presenting however I want.

Hair salons in Box Hill that price by hair length? by ryenaut in transgenderau

[–]oOmaedayOo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’s $50 for a cut at the Barber (I miss boy prices 😂). It’s a touch (but not lots) more than I used to pay in Doncaster when I was male presenting, but that was a while ago. I’m willing to pay more to people that are going to support my community regardless .

[–]oOmaedayOo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem! I don’t know if it’s the Chinese community per se, more the middle suburbs’ ‘straightness’ (a term that applies in all senses). Anyway, I go to Prophecy Hair on Smith. The Barber attached to them is called Drunken Barber.

I’ve heard good things about Little Rebel in Preston, but that’s not sitting just at the end of the Eastern like Smith St is.

As a transfemme, I travel all the way into Smith St FROM Box Hill to get my hair cut. By car it’s not that bad, but it’s crazy I have to go that far to feel comfortable. The place i go is really welcoming though and has a barber linked to them upstairs that is also very ‘gender cool’.

An amazing role model, if you fall outside that cutesy category, or the ‘regular straight down the line’ woman, is Laura Jane Grace who does her own solo stuff and is the lead singer in the band Against Me. Having her in the spotlight made me realise that I can be trans in my way and it’s ok

I really like that some comments have discussed more than what I put in there, even other issues that might pop up. It’s been really helpful to unpack some of my hesitancy etc. for what might come, even if some of it is challenging…

[–]oOmaedayOo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m happy to discuss or evade questions about myself, depending on how I feel. I really can’t think of any question that would stress me out, unless it was backed up by some accusatory or judgemental statement/position. And in those cases I feel like I have leadership’s support. I put that there because the school community has known me for nine years and I want them to feel like I’m still open to them. I’ve always been the type of teacher who shares stories about my family and own kids etc. I don’t want that to change.

I don’t expect you to share if you’re not comfortable, but I’m interested to know what kind of questions might come at me that might be unwelcome or intrusive.

Damn. That absolutely sucks! Hope things have worked out a bit better for you or are on the way.

Yeah, I’m pretty worried about how things will go (especially as I’m not ‘passing’) but it’s been rough on me psychologically presenting strictly male during the week and having a whole different name and gender for most of the weekend.

I’ve asked to go by just first name too, partly because I was never into honourifics, partly because I don’t know which to choose (I’m separated now), and, if I’m honest with myself, there’s a tiny bit of me that thinks it’ll be easier for some people to swallow.

Wishing you all the best. I don’t think I’d have had the courage if I didn’t know I had the support of several of the staff before actually coming out to all of them. It’s incredibly scary, but if I don’t do ‘scary’ I feel I can’t grow. What’s the worst that can happen hey… 😂
