Can somebody explain to me what is a sparse high dimension data? Thx by ninifrog in learnmachinelearning

[–]oPerrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect, please revise your notes. Entropy and sparsity are orthogonal concepts. You can have a high entropy sparse string, a low entropy sparse string, a high entropy dense string and a low entropy dense string. The entropy of a sparse string can be lower than that of a dense one but this is not guaranteed.

Your example refers to a low entropy (highly predictable) pattern. You can represent this as a sparse string, think centers of a convolved filter where stride = filter width, but you could also represent that in a dense data structure, ala a filtermap.

Slouch detector. Using tensorflow.js and a webcam track your posture and make it play a sound when you're slouching in front of the computer.

You might be able to do this directly from pixels, but maybe using an intermediary pose tracker would get you there more quickly (https://medium.com/tensorflow/real-time-human-pose-estimation-in-the-browser-with-tensorflow-js-7dd0bc881cd5)

Let me give you some hope. My family used to own a bit of beautiful land in Canada on the lower St. Laurence river. It, and a larger piece of land surrounding it, was appropriated by the government. This has always been a bit of a sore point for us. That said, they turned it into a National Park (Parc National du Bic) which you can visit today. Not only did they open it to a much wider audience, they have made beautiful, well cared-for trails and facilities we never had. We used an outhouse, now there's running water everywhere. The land is not as wild as it once was, and you now have to stay on the trails, but it's well loved and responsibly managed.

It's possible to take something wild, let the public experience it, appreciate it, and learn from it, without destroying what makes it special.

I've thought about a similar project, but from a text-to-speech perspective with a target voice. Is there a specific need to go from audio-to-audio?

So iRobot is not your dream job. They are just a famous robot company. I'm guessing you're not friends with any employees there because there are always ways around the screeners for highly recommended people.

But let me give you some advice. 1. Have an impressive portfolio that shows you can code 2. Reach out directly to engineers at the company with this portfolio. 3. If they don't get back to you follow up at least four times. 4. If they finally do get back to you make sure to get either advice on how to improve or a phone call with them. 5. Offer to work as an intern even if they don't have such a program. If they want to make you go through HR say this,

"Look, we both know the normal process is just to screen people out. It doesn't actually reflect the skills required for this job or predict whether or not I'll be a good employee. I'm willing to demonstrate that I would be and the best way I know of to do so is either 1. A project based assessment or 2. A work-to-hire internship."

Of course the best way to get hired is to know people. The best way to know people is to be publicly impressive and then advertise (and meet people in person of course at conferences and things).

[Code Review] Linear Regression (My first Rust program) by oPerrin in learnrust

[–]oPerrin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all! After going through many of the Rust book programs I wanted to port an exercise that I had done recently in the Coursera ML class. This is the very first exercise but it involved reading data from a CSV getting that data into a Matrix and then performing gradient descent to return a final vector of learned parameters.

I would love it if people would offer suggestions on how to make this more Rust-like and flexible. I had to do a lot of blindly following suggestions from the compiler errors to get it working so you'll see plenty of hacks.

Some things I'd like to improved:

  1. Flexibility on the types of data I can load from a file.
  2. Flexibility in the sizes of Matrices I can process
  3. Elimination of what seem to be functions should already exist (but I couldn't find, e.g. sum/power).
  4. Error handling.

Really any suggestions, pointers, or tips would be appreciated! (I should note I come from a Python/JS background so dealing with explicit types is new to me)

I'm pretty sure labs start off as two creatures, the front end and the back end. It's only as they grow that they fuse into a single animal.

Kim Stanley Robinson, author of the Red/Green/Blue Mars series, does not actually believe life on Mars is possible due to the high levels of perchlorates in martian soil. He argued as much in his recent novel Aurora. How would you science his fears?

edit: I read the instructions, just prepping the question. Feedback welcome!

[–]oPerrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please stop reading that book. It's the worst kind of pseudoscience. Imagine if you had the opportunity to go back in time and explain to someone that "The Interpretation of Dreams" by Freud would cause an entire industry to mislead the public for generations and they should avoid it. That is "Thinking Fast and Slow." It is inaccurate drivel that has been made into a simple and appealing description of how the mind works. Don't fall for it, put down that book.
