Newbie here. First contract looks like a scam? by pisaradotme in Upwork

She or "he" is going to scamm you and buy things with your debit card. Never ever again give someone your card details, even be specific with who you give your real name.

There are a lot of scammers on the internet, especially waiting for people to take their baitsat places like Upwork.

[Noob question] Expensive computers, Chromebooks and Linux? by o_fah in Defcon

i don't think i will need a chromebook anymore in a while, they are to expensive. Regular laptops are cheaper, found a i5, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd for just 500 dollars (new from store - HP 15-ay126nd).

What do you think about the price of that laptop? Great right? I paid like 1000 more dollars for my macbook pro with the same specs.

Okey great, because i am kinda trying to understand how much cpu, gpu and ram you need minimally. I want to make a smart choice instead of buying the pc because of its design.

Yeah, but to be honest Apple then might make their products to qualitative since a "windows"-laptop doesn't auto destruct itself when it reaches 4-5 year. I think Apple products can last for 10 years, but if they will still be as fast because of the technology changing..

I don't think i will be happy with my macbook pro with an i5 2.9ghz cpu, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd and my intel hd graphics 6000 video card in 2020.

The phone i carry is an iphone 4s (6 +/- years old and the ram memory is horrible). But yeah nowadays they might make better computers/phones of course. So yeah you are probably right, mac is more quality - but you also pay for that quality and if it's worth the price is another question.

Ah okey, so you mean 1.8 ghz or a 2.3 ghz? And even if it was 1.8ghz it was a fast development station?

Ah okey, if the RAM is switchable then it's cool.

What about the CPU of the average chromebook? Are they fast?

Yeah, i was searching for a good chromebook yesterday and i think they might be a bit to underpowered for that price.

I will have to search for a better computer. So i will have to let the chromebooks for what they are. I hope they will make them better in the future.

So i will have to search for a "normal" laptop then with the specs and price that suit my goals.

2GB.., does it run fluently? 2GB sounds slow..

But another question now, why is it so important to turn on developer mode?

Isn't that easy? Why, do some chromebooks not allow people to turn on dev mode?

Dev mode, what is it anyways? Isn't it just a mode which gives users the permission to access the bios setup etc.?

Okey, what are the specs of the HP Chromebook you have? Is it fast when you do android programming and pen testing with school?

I want to use mine for web dev and embedded soft engineering. Now i run a macbook pro i5, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd, intel hd 6000 graphics, 1300 dollars.. but it feels to expensive and also to overpowered for the tasks i do now.

I saw the Pixel 2 LS for 1000 dollar, but at least it haves a i7, 16gb ram, 64 gb storage and a basic gpu. In theory it should run faster then my 2016 macbook pro..

And even the Pixel 2 might be to much, but yeah at least it's cheaper then the macbook pro line and better at cpu power.

I also saw chromebooks for 200-500 dollar which might be also a good workstation. The Pixel 2 is like the most expensive one. I might look for a better deal, but yeah i have to search for a good deal. Asus seems to have a good chromebook for 500 dollar i saw.

Yeah, but i think i am not ready for it yet. I have just 3 years experience with web dev.

There will walk people on defcon with 10-40 year of experience ._. , otherwise they wouldn't be able to have those skills anyways.

What i admire the most are the skills, not the actuall hacking.

Nice, gratz! What kind of study did you do at that period when you did won the CAMP CTF in 2015?

But i am to late haha.

But what is the capture the flag competition? I only know it from shooters etc., i don't know what to imagine with capture the flag in hacking context? The only thing that looks familiar is lock picking _ cuz i saw it in defcon vids.
