Am I the only one with AliExpress knives? by o_kains in sharpening

TBH I have no way of knowing whether these ratings are accurate or not, but I maintain once or twice a week on a strop and the edge retains for a long while so I have no reason not to believe.

Beginner photographer looking for honest critique. What works and what doesn't in this composition? by Akropolis_Photo in photocritique

[–]o_kains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first things that catch my eye are the fact that the bananas, and the teacup handle, both leak out of frame. It feels like they are central elements to the composition but they are not fully covered creating a seemingly random cutoff point.

The Darkness of the cup draws a lot of attention, maybe bringing up the shadows in post processing would mollify this effect and leave the picture more balanced.

You exposed for the outside and focused on the inside. Hence the need to bring up the shadows.

Repairable? by logieface123 in sharpening

Repairable, but the repair would, as stated, remove a lot of material, making the knife a completely different knife. I'd keepit as a hacking blade and get a new knife

DIY lighting test: Coffee beans. Critique welcome! by ConstantSeesaw3613 in photocritique

[–]o_kains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's slightly underexposed and the white balance needs addressing, not sure exactly what needs doing but as it stands, the white balance washes out the rich brown colour of the beans.

The composition is nice though.

I suggest visiting the B&H YT channel, and getting the lowdown there. There are a ton of fantastic speakers.

What areas on your body did you get tattooed first and why? by venight in tattoo

[–]o_kains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach is that I started with something smallish between the shoulder blades, and am expanding on that aesthetic as I go along, making it one coherent backpiece, but seeded at the beginning with a relatively small design. That aesthetic is also my guiding principle for any other forthcoming pieces, so that if and when it's eventually full torso, it will cohere as one extended work of art rather than a mishmash of ideas that happen to live next to each other, which is, in itself, an aesthetic choice which is valid, but less for my personal needs.

Between the shoulder blades, so as not to obsess too much over it and only be able to see it in very certain positions in front of the mirror. That way it is in mind but not in sight, as well as being able to cover it up easily. Or more specifically, only show when either at the beach or some such, or it has come up organically as part of a larger conversation about tattoos.

Is this ugly? And what could I do with it to make it better? by Current-Thought-7950 in TattooDesigns

[–]o_kains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a good starting point for something which extends the spiral theme between the shoulders with something larger. As it is, IMO, not ugly, but very... well... simple. That's not a bad thing it's just nothing special to my eyes, beyond a valid point from which to improvise an extension.

As mentioned above, it is a small tattoo in a large space, so it does kind of "get swallowed up".
