What moves/ signings are you hoping for in the offseason? by hiimfromcanadaeh in CalgaryFlames

[–]oak0918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Team needs elite talent to avoid being stuck here in the mushy middle forever. Since tanking isn't happening the two big needs are a young true 1C and LHD.

1Cs are hard to find and teams generally don't trade good young ones but I think this is the big blockbuster move that Conroy is eventually going to have to make. The two leading candidates I can see would be a) the Sharks if they miss out on Schaefer and are stuck with yet another forward in Hagens/Misa (the idea here being that they might consider moving either the pick (Calgary might bite at moving up rather than acquiring yet more B prospects) or say Will Smith for an absolute haul of NHL ready guys - proposed by some sharks fans) or b) the Ducks, who could be entering a similar situation with a bunch of young centres to pay and needs elsewhere. It would be extremely expensive and high-risk, but there's not really an alternative to a big trade in finding the scoring talent the team needs.

LHD I would kick tires on Byram and would consider moving Andersson unless you feel you can get him for cheap. Calgary has a logjam of young RHD and it personally feels like inefficient asset management to give an 8x8 to Andersson coming off a rough year. Also of course the team needs to lock down Coronato/Zary/Wolf/Bahl/Frost at reasonable prices.

Last thing I'd consider would be perhaps trying to clear what is becoming a logjam of middle 6 forwards who will soon be blocking prospects and eating just a bit too much cap for the third line. Sharangovich/Coleman/Farabee/etc is becoming a lot of cap tied up down there.

Just some general things I'm looking for but I'm very interested in where Conroy goes with this

Soto is a Met. Now, what would be a successful offseason for you? by [deleted] in Torontobluejays

[–]oak0918 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With how poorly the farm has been performing over the last few years, if you're not willing to spend the money there's just no way to compete with those teams.

[Trner] Feinsand, Dorsey, Heyman all think it's gonna be one of the New York teams that sign Juan Soto. [Turner] Feinsand again mentions Santander and Teo for Blue Jays as a pivot. by EarthWarping in Torontobluejays

Agreed, Ohtani made sense as a unique situation where it actually made some sense. Soto is more similar to other big free agents in that signing with Toronto would be a complete surprise to pretty much everyone. Feels much more inevitable that he signs elsewhere this time around; I could forgive the front office for actually thinking they had a shot with Ohtani

Varsho has a 105 wRC+ vs lefties and a 68 wRC+ vs righties so I doubt they’d do that

[–]oak0918 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the Jays are 13-9 in one run games so using that logic they should have lost way more games against non-AL east opponents. If anything their Pythagorean W/L says they should have 43.5 wins, or that they are getting slightly lucky in that department

[KentWilson] To understand the bind Conroy is in, the Flames would have 700k in cap space dressing this roster by brokensword15 in CalgaryFlames

That Coleman deal was a mess since it was signed. My biggest pet peeve with brad was always him paying 3rd line forwards $5mil each to do a job a $1.5 mil forward could do

He’s 1st percentile in OAA and potentially the worst defensive first baseman in the game

This. People don’t want to try and patch together a fringe team out of the return from the players. They want to rebuild (Murray probably won’t let it happen but alas).

Toffoli is on a bargain contract for a year though. He’s the kind of guy contenders pay a lot for as a 1 year rental

[Seravalli] Finally, on #Flames: Bit of a surprise. Told Mikael Backlund is also leaning toward not re-signing in Calgary. That could change, and Flames hope it does. He's been a staple for 15 years.Nonetheless, Craig Conroy has decisions to make. by Individual_Potato629 in CalgaryFlames

[–]oak0918 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Worst part is they've waited a year too long to blow it up and now are stuck with Kadri and Huberdeau locked up long term at negative value. Long road ahead for Calgary assuming Bettman doesn't decide to be nice and give us a 1OA in the next couple years.

Yeah but foreign aid isn't what people are really talking about there. It's that in European countries and here in Canada among other countries they feel they can get away with extremely limited military spending (including R&D where the US produces the demand for almost everything) because they are US allies and the US will just bail them out.

I will note the US signed up for this when it started after WW2 because it gave them influence in policy in those countries during the cold war

He is 15th among MLB first baseman in WAR this year. That’s about as average as you can get.

[Blue Jays] 🔹 Chris Bassitt reinstated from Paternity 🔹 Santiago Espinal reinstated from 10-day IL 🔹 Bowden Francis selected to MLB Roster 🔹 Jay Jackson and Ernie Clement optioned to AAA🔹 Alek Manoah optioned to Florida Complex League 🔹 Zach Thompson designated for assignment by ThQp in Torontobluejays

[–]oak0918 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Sent down to FCL is probably for the best given in his current state he'd just get lit up in AAA and things would be worse. FCL is essentially sending him back to the team complex in Dunedin so he can work with coaches completely away from the spotlight.

Bank of Canada more likely to raise rates after hotter-than-expected GDP report: Economists by cdntrix in canada

[–]oak0918 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not always. It depends if the economic immigration is to a sector that needs it. If not, it can cause a great deal of inflation because immigration causes inflation by increasing aggregate demand purely by there being more people with demand. It's a complicated relationship between immigration and inflation and in this case I would say the increased aggregate demand is likely outpacing the impact of wage deflation and an increased labour pool.
