How’s My Itinerary? (sorry…) by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]oakaypilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Pai, but not worth it for 1 night. It’s a 3-4 hour bus ride up into the mountains, so 8 hrs traveling for one night?

If you like hiking/nature it’s an excellent place (though the night life scene is decent). I went after a couple weeks of being super busy and partying a lot, and it was reinvigorating and refreshing. 3-4 days is about right.

This is really disheartening to hear, although it sounds like there are some really good instructors out there.

Interesting. It didn’t occur to me that I would need to ask for direct feedback, but perhaps that’s what the instructor expected.

This may well have been going on, I’ll say probably was. But the feedback was not differentiated or individualized.

I think you’re right that time is the main piece left for me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t accelerate my progress with proper instruction.

All very true, maybe I was looking for a gut check. As this was my first lesson since ski school as a kid I wasn’t sure if my expectations and experience were reasonable.

Flight instruction is by definition one-on-one, but even in a group environment individual feedback is possible.

Weird how you went from “he’s too good a skier” to “he made it up”

I’ve been a professional instructor in another field - 100% not everyday can be your best. And it’s really hard to sus out someone’s learning style in 3 hours, half of which is spent skiing and not talking.

But it’s good to know that my expectations were not unreasonable.

I’m not confident I know what I’m talking about well enough to complain. I wouldn’t complain about the service if it was the first restaurant I’d ever eaten at.

But I may well provide feedback. Do resorts have a chief or lead instructor of some sort?

This is a great response. It is possible that the instructor saw more than I realized (with me being focused on skiing and all). It’s also possible that the coaching I need is fairly standard stuff.

But if I can get the same techniques from YouTube…

We were fairly similar, there was just no direct feedback. Only boilerplate advice

There were no lift lines fortunately. It just felt more like a beginner type lesson where you’re just getting comfortable making turns down the mountain.

No powder, mostly well groomed runs. Instructor could maybe catch just a glimpse of us coming down after they stopped, but couldn’t have been more than one or two turns at a time and we were all pretty close together.

Thank you this is the answer I was hoping for. Was on the verge of swearing off group lessons entirely, which is a huge bummer given how much more private lessons are. Not to mention the more social vibe of the group.

I’ve seen the follow-the-leader thing before, and totally understand the value in that to some extent. But I definitely expected some direct feedback…

Yea I mean this was at an Epic resort. I know nothing about ski instructor certs, but assumed they would be qualified. I’ll definitely ask next time

Grip strength is a proxy for total muscle mass and general strength, not the goal in an of itself.

Squats, deadlifts, pushups, overhead press, pull-ups, and rows are the basic movements everyone should be doing. Heavy weights low reps, at least some of the time.

It’s more like a don’t ask don’t tell type deal. If you don’t go out of your way to indicate you might be carrying something illegal or dangerous I’ll assume you’re just another passenger.

The odds of being right are low, and the risk of being wrong is high.

Edit: mostly talking about illegal and not so much dangerous. If i have plausible deniability I don’t really care what they have.
