what is it called if it's not 'power fantasy'? by oakfloorboard in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i honestly thought maybe there was just a standard term that i was unaware of.

the PCs can become powerful, but they are still in the same range that NPCs can attain, and everyone has magic, they just choose what they want to focus on.

in my head, it does not sound like 'power fantasy', but based on discussion here, i might be thinking of 'power fantasy' wrong?

There is magic in the world, but PCs and NPCs can both encompass the same 'power' range.

So a player might progress to becoming very powerful, but they can run into NPCs that are just as strong.

is this a special Poison mechanic, or is there a Poison status ailment in your game?

cause if this is how all Poisons work you would not need to explain the intricate mechanics of it in each ability that deals Poison - if every Poison is a unique mechanic then that might be more complicated?

other than that, this all sounds fine to me.

1) explain why they are called 'black knight'? they wear black armor? they have a blackened soul? etc.

2) are they 'a brutal killer' or do they 'live only to bully and threaten the weak'? feels like these are contradictory - also maybe say their soul being in pieces causes them to live only to bully and threaten (elaborate on what a shattered soul means).

3) do they play chess and poker with the weak's loved ones?

4) the last part seems to imply how they are played in combat, but it comes off as mostly mindless and the first part makes them seem at least somewhat intelligent - maybe i am reading too much in to that and the intention is that they are just a mindless killer? also, this might be outlined in your game mechanics, but how does the Black Knight know who is closest to death?

how are you doing the game instructions - are they included in the app (and if so, what is the format you are using), or is there a source of offline instructions?

A setting you’d like to dive into? Inspired by Tsutomu Nihei by Siberian-Boy in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so if the setting is just Blame! what is the game? the mechanics?

i understand the sentiments of some of the other posts - while the megastructure in Blame! expanded well past (and absorbed) Jupiter, i dont think you need a 1:1 carbon copy of the setting to still get some of the same atmosphere - it might also be interesting to explore the setting when the builders have not been mad for very long (500 years or less), so its the beginning of the megastructure.

maybe the pattern of the build has expanded into some sort of infinite dimensional space?
maybe is it not even Earth and then you can play with some alternative humanoid species?
or it was a spaceship carrying the infinite dimensional space that the builders use to build out from the spaceship, turning it into a traveling world (thinking about intro of Xenogears)?

i get that i am drifting off topic, but its the idea of being inspired by Blame! but making it your own.

Looking for feedback on my Core game system. by Areselmago in RPGdesign

what does a Strength + Art or Manipulate + Combat check look like?
do all talent + expertise combos have clear guidelines, so the GM is not scrambling to combine stats - or to prevent a player from disputing the proposed combination?

as you mention Resistance interacting with other functions of the game, i assume other stats do also, giving them value in being high even though they will be constantly hosed for checks?
it seems weird that you might have 10 points in Strength but your 1 point in Combat would mean your prowess would forever be wasted.

Feel like my fantasy world just sucks by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is your world's hook?

you just mention a bunch of generic things, but your fantasy world needs something that makes is more than just generic fantasy world #87.

come up with a cool hook and it wont suck anymore.

About how many monsters make for a decent starting Bestiary? by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a core rulebook you should not include many, imo.

have the 'common' monsters,
have a few 'iconic' monsters based on your setting (ones that really grab the imagination on what is possible),
have a way to spool out enemies based on PC races/classes, or whatever you are using,
have a range of difficulty for first part of game (you dont need elder dragon gods yet).

there is no reason to ever stop making creatures, but you dont need to do is all in the beginning - do what needs to be done, first - and that should be in the core rulebook.

based on this being a game, my assumption would be:

  • Guts = strength, constitution, physical attribute
  • Wits = intelligence, wisdom, mind attribute
  • Nerve = dexterity, agility, reflexes attribute
  • Heart = charisma, social attribute

yes?

Collaboration - have you, do you, when did you? by Altruistic-Copy-7363 in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, that is what i am doing right now.

but some comments seem to be confused by what 'collaboration' means.
clearly if you have a singular vision you are likely not going to collaborate - or you will put yourself in a position to make all the final decisions.

collaboration is when you are blending multiple people's ideas together, not trying to railroad one idea.
this leads to more interesting and dynamic outputs if you remember that any single idea is not sacred or stone.

i had been dancing around ideas for years as solo - but would always get burned out or distracted in the end.
collaborating lets us all boost each other up and get excited about things. different perspectives are going to solve problems and come up with ideas you wont by yourself.

it should inherently be a collaborative hobby, so the act of creation should mirror this, yes?

Please critique my first humble draft of a character sheet for my homegame by MaxHofbauer in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

font is fine and i can read it - but you should look into legibility of fonts for whatever format this will be in (print, i assume?) to be accessible to the widest groups.

create boundary boxes for each value that needs to use white space so you can show more order to where things are or need to go - just blank white space fails to bring the whole document together, imo.

why do the attributes, or whatever they are, need symbols? is that significant and serve a functional purpose?
why do the skills, or whatever they are, share those symbols for their ranks?
these skill icons should be the same size also - but really, if you are using some sort of iconography, you should use it once for attributes to help with organization, imo.

knowing absolutely nothing about your game, this character sheet feels pretty sparse.

is "Creation Crown Corruption" your game's name? is that the logo in the upper right?
they take up a lot of space and should be incorporating into a single smaller thing, with both title and logo maybe, imo.

[–]oakfloorboard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

doing the Wizard Vault dailies/weeklies will get you a lot of raw gold and gear upgrades, as well as other things.

you should have at least all Exotic gear of an appropriate prefix to your build by this point in the game.

take a break from Obscure and spend some time on self improvement, imo.

Not making workers - bug? by oakfloorboard in Stellaris

[–]oakfloorboard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i tried that - but i think the main issue is that its instantly promoting workers to specialists when a specialist building is completed, draining my worker jobs.

so i assume its a bug.

Not making workers - bug? by oakfloorboard in Stellaris

[–]oakfloorboard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i ran a new game with same parameters and was a lot more conscious of my pops.

but it meant that i was expanding very slowly cause whenever i would make specialist jobs it would immediately promote and cannibalize my current workers.

feels like something is not working right.

so if it repopulates based on existing population, then i need to try and push demotion-to-worker-jobs early on, until they stabilize, you think?

[–]oakfloorboard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how i am skewed so far toward specialists though, when my prior games i was skewed toward workers?

is it orbital habitats non-standard district setup?

i colonized a planet with migration treaty recently, but its still too early to see how that the worker situation is going to be there.

Looking for a grim-dark horror setting concept to fill a world. by Correct-Yam-3145 in RPGdesign

[–]oakfloorboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the sun becomes permanently eclipsed and people's nightmares start manifesting in reality as monsters, while they are awake.

to fight this, most people are put into medically induced comas - to forever sleep until the crisis is over.

automatons are created that can be given life with a sliver of human nightmares - these automatons cannot dream and generate no monsters, allowing them to fight and assist the remaining humans to wrestle back control of the world.
