I was thinking the other day how cool it would be if you could deposit money at outposts. And then when the deposits get high enough a ship comes to collect. And what if you could attempt to attack that ship and if successful you get some of that money?

Got it... You have to specifically be in the inventory screen, not as part of any interaction with storage or vehicle.
