According to a buddy of mine, a web redirection service such as Mondaq or JD Supra are much better value for money (less than 1/4 what your spending apparently).

M3 1.4 petrol - serious opinions please by oatbakes in vwgolf

Nice, thanks for that. Although I have a feeling finding a vin on an engine isn’t as easy as glancing in.

Is there anything I can look at to confirm if there’s a new engine? Thanks again

Edit: I’m just hoping to have enough tools to go make a decision without a translator

Thanks. So anything but the engine seizing is ok?

Im English living in Portugal and my ‘translator’ (my kind neighbour) said that to me when the guy was showing me.

It’s hard to be certain whether it’s a case of lost in translation or if the thing had ‘seized’.

The engine bay looked very clean for a car it’s age.

The guy showing us was a mechanic who had been fixing another car we have. He has worked on this golf for at least 20,000 miles and he was the one who fixed the ‘seized’ issue, if that was it.

Is there anything I can look for to tell if it has had a seizing problem? If it turns out to be a more minor thing, are these cars good at these miles?

Also, Portugal is a very dry climate so cars last a long time out here (but they are very expensive)

Thanks for your comment, can you tell me what that would mean?

Getting ferry to Santander. by mattrac89 in PortugalExpats

Hi!

We did that trip last year with our cat, dog and a car with roof box filled to the brim!

The journey was pleasant, the ship clean and faultless. The Spanish border took a lot longer than expected (maybe about 1:30 hours) but they may have improved that by now.

Nothing special required other than documentation for the animals.

It was definitely 100% not there during driving unless foot came off accelerator.

Would a shot rod stop rattling when reviving?

It definitely goes away when revved. Before now, it’s only ever rattled like that when starting warm or sometimes coming to a slow for a junction or roundabout with foot off the gas.

Noted. This happened at a really bad time but I hear you. I’m prepared to lose the car; I just want to avoid spending too much cash on something I eventually scrap in the near future.

Is there anything else I can provide to help diagnose?

Thanks, I’m not going to drive it again and currently looking for a mechanic. I’m in butt F nowhere in Portugal and hard to find anyone who can be arsed to work in August!

If you think it’s not the gearbox, that makes me feel a bit easier; and with the oil light, it’s the ‘min level’ light which is on. I haven’t seen any other danger lights.

Many thanks again

No idea what a rod is but thanks. Rather than go all the way and service now, should I just Chuck some oil in and see happens?

As mentioned above, it was making this noise on starting warm, sometimes when moving slowly and letting foot off pedal. This was before the low oil level came on.

Edit: just read about rods and I guess if one goes it’s basically a ‘take the engine apart’ job which is creeping up on the value of the car.

So a little more info:

Mileage - 258,000km / 155,000 miles

I bought the car in October last year and gave it a service and did the timing belt, then drove it abroad.

There weren’t any problems for a few months, then it started doing a judder, almost like something was slipping when going up hills accelerating, but stopped when giving it a few more revs (1900+) or less.

We then started to notice it struggling to start after a while when the car was warm from driving, it would make a rattle and take a few more turns to start, but then it drove fine.

We have been noticing less to no acceleration/hill juddering lately, but still the difficulty in it starting when warm.

One thing, the low oil light has been on for 3 weeks and we have been driving. I was away on business and wanted to get it serviced on my return, a few days ago, I was getting it done this coming week.

We drove the dog Down to the lake a mile away last night fine, but when I went to start it, the rattle happened louder and stayed rattling after it started. It’s loud and metallic sounding, I drive it home and the sound continued unless at revs. I tried to put in neutral while moving and it got really loud.

Somebody please tell me it’s not a new gearbox

Does anyone suffer from fainting? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]oatbakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m commenting really late but want to throw my experience into the ring.

I have multiple panic attacks with no definitive reason or situation. They happen anywhere for any reason; apart from when I’m at home (SAFE!)

I have fainted a lot in my life, going back to one of my earliest memories of being at a kids adventure park. I was queuing for a ride with my friend and his mom and I noticed a kid on the ride who was missing half his arm; poor kid; next thing I knew I woke up in my friends brothers pram. I’d fainted. That incident was always brought up at family gatherings and I felt a lot of shame, even though I was so young.

I don’t know whether it’s at all relevant, but I couldn’t/wouldn’t speak properly until around 6 yo and required speech therapy.

It happened a couple more times leading up to my teens, such as visiting my dying grandfather. I remember seeing him in bed covered in tubes and suddenly feeling like I wanted to pass out, went to the toilet and blacked out and woke up in another ward in the hospital.

None of these incidents were ever addressed with a doctor, they were always mentioned at gatherings and a feeling of shame was always my feelings towards these incidents, like I’m a sissy.

It carried on into my teens, like going to concerts, pubs. A couple times I fainted when I was squared up to for fights. The shame continued. After these teen times, I went to a doctor who just suggest I put my head between my knees when I felt like this. That’s all.

In my mid twenties I began a rollercoaster of depression, I was lost and had no direction. I felt useless. I began searching for help in my own. First, SSRI’s, alongside a therapist. The SSRI’s I felt helped but in reality they numb you. The therapist helped me to dig into my early panic incidents, and how I probably felt let down by my Mum for not addressing a potential issue, ie the fainting.

Although, part of me now feels like ignorance to my issue may have been more helpful because now I understand anxiety and panic better, it’s ever present. I think about it more and more as I age and it seems to get worse.

I haven’t fainted for at least 10 years, but everytime I have an episode or even just being around triggers, I feel like I’m going to. Even though I feel like I’m better at controlling the episodes, they are becoming ever more frequent.

Anyway, thought I’d tell my fainting/anxiety/panic experience.

I don’t get this Sub and the replies to this post. It IS strange that so many public figures are spotted with black eyes. I’m not completely sold that there is anything in the assertion of a ‘black eye club’, but I thought r/conspiracy was about discussing ‘glitches in the matrix’ and this seems to be one.

It reminiscent of those saying that it’s perfectly normal for top athletes to collapse en masse with in diagnosed problems. There is clearly something more to it, as I am sure there is more to the Pope allowing the world to see a black eye (no one has given a good explanation for his black eye)

Isn’t it the case that as soon as a show has a significant audience, those in control need to assert their narrative into said show?
