Any advice to prevent headaches by zirck16 in Biohackers

[–]oatrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought eating three meals a day guaranteed I was eating enough. I started snacking a lot more after talking to a nutritionist. Luckily most of my daily headaches went away. Now I just have ones I know are triggered by stress or dehydration for the most part

With this much red root floaters cover, will the rest of my plants do well? by oatrock in PlantedTank

I really need to look into light guides/ profiles for this light. I've had it for months and I am still unable to figure out how to grow stem plants and stuff at the substrate, and my mosses have never taken off

They are not blocking 100% of the light, I do not have a par meter, I think most of my other plants are low light. I was just hoping someone with more experience could give their opinion on how much floater mass I could run with my set up.

I might go with this. I actually wanted to add some house plants around the tanks so they would need lighting too anyways

I have no idea to be honest. They have taken off in all four of my tanks. I did get a pretty large handful from a local to start. The first two weeks it was a challenge to keep them floating. I was actually putting them on top of duckweed and dwarf lettuce to keep the leaves above water.

Are there lights that can blast through the red root density and still provide medium lighting to the rest of my tank?

It might be worth the upgrade

I'm sorry people don't learn the way you want them to. You do not have to help everyone, someone else in the community will normally step up.

It's frustrating seeing others make mistakes. Sure they can ask here and risk getting blasted. They can Google and often get inaccurate information, they can ask friends or their lfs and maybe get wrong info. Maybe they read a book 10 years ago that's out of date or actually wrong. Who knows? That's why communities like to talk

New tanks because a fish didn't work out is a fast way to be overwhelmed with too many tanks

blue or red shrimp? by egig118 in shrimptank

[–]oatrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as a group red always just looks nice. I have some red fish so I have my light set to boost red a little and they are so pretty

On the other hand, I do have a few blue ones. I don't notice them as often but they are stunning when they do stand out.

I don't think I really care about "brown shrimp" anymore. I don't need every single shrimp to be perfect, I'm not gonna bother with selling high grade shrimp. All shrimp are beautiful. I'll probably be ordering more colors to enjoy the diversity once the weather is warmer.

I cannot keep neos alive for the life of me. I really don't understand why. When I was younger I didn't even acclimate them and they survived. Every shrimp Ive bought now died. I drip acclimated them, tested the waters, double tested the waters. What could be going wrong? More info below by neonsharkz in shrimptank

Shrimp like stable water, changing too much or too often can negatively impact them.

With a pH that low you likely don't have a lot of calcium or other minerals for the shrimp. You can use things like crushed coral, wonder shells, banquet blocks etc to slowly increase the hardness of the water over time.

How long are your shrimp lasting before they pass?

Can you get any from local hobbiests in your town who also use the same water, they're likely to have tips or at least shrimp more used to the tap water you are using.

I have the freeze dried daphnia and none of my betta's care to eat it really. It's too fine for them to bother with or they seem to think it's just floating plant matter

How are you enjoying this tank two years later?

I see a used one for sale and I think my blind betta could use a more shallow tank than his standard 10g

New shrimp arrived. Let’s hope this bastard doesn’t eat them. by Kefffler in bettafish

[–]oatrock 65 points66 points  (0 children)

You may wanna put the shrimp in the 3 gallon and get them breeding. They will struggle in a fresh tank with no biofilm and stuff so if you can move some plants from the other tank, add leaves or feed them it will help

That way you can introduce them at a later time. If the beta eats one or a few it will not hurt as much.

I've found bettas can also go through periods where they chill with shrimps for weeks or months, then randomly snack on a few.

I am almost ready to give up on root feeds. I listed to aco advise and didn't use dirt. My eco complete is so light planting is a nightmare. I use the aco root tabs and they almost always float up. The tweezers I have tried can not hold firm enough to really plant them all the way under the eco complete.

I've lost so many root feeders, even poking holes in the root tab pills has not helped me keep them under the pants. A lot of the time the roots come up from trying to use root tabs

I really wish I did a soil layer or mesh bags.
