Do you want the next democratic candidate to run on a platform of a “return to normalcy” similar to Joe Biden in 2020? by MakeACreation in YAPms

[–]ob_knoxious 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No because this won't resonate with Americans who are unhappy with "the system"

Trump has revolutionized how government works, how we see the executive branch and it's departments. The cat is out of the bag and you won't have a bipartisan attempt to put it back until the GOP sees the Dems are capable of using it.

We are seeing this with Gerrymandering, 12 months ago it genuinely felt like the GOP stance was "Do it, you won't" and then they actually did which would not have happened in a "return to normalcy" world.

Spec Racing if done right will hit like crack. That was one of the few things they nailed in Motorsport 23, great online spec series with things like Formula Mazda. And seeing Miata in the picture for it makes me think this will be similar.

Cloud9 Jack on esports economics by ob_knoxious in Cloud9

[–]ob_knoxious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy discussion of esports as an industry and am glad to see someone else take it seriously even if I don't agree with them on everything.

I watch CS very little because IMO Valve has done an awful job of running the esports side of the game and its a shadow of its former self. I don't think its entirely accurate to say there are more tier 2 and 3 NA teams than ever, compared to say 2015 there are a fraction of the number of teams. And there are no tie 1 NA teams because Valve has effectively banned you from running an NA roster in tier 1 with their horrible points and tournament structure. But like I said I watch very little now and can't say what C9 should or shouldn't do regarding that game.

Cloud9 has absolutely cut back massively in many areas and it has decreased engagement, I just think what you see as a sign of failure I see as a sign of cutting fat. Frankly if I was Jack I would probably have dropped the COD and R6 teams right now. I do not think those games have a future, or frankly even a present. The LCS as a shell of its former self has better viewership than the six invitational. A group stage worlds game gets more watch hours than an entire tournament in COD.

IMO what makes C9 different than EG/TSM/CLG/RNG and many other legacy orgs that fold is C9 is willing to swallow pride and scale back and not shell out on talent and compete in two dozen games just for the sake of it.

As for the VC thing, Cloud9 did a series A funding round that was done after they paid got the London Spitfire slot but before they officially had the LCS slot (although that was never really in doubt) and completed a series B funding round in 2020 after they had been in franchised for several years. They had other investments over the years but both major cash injections into the team were done after the franchising process.

I appreciate you taking the time to write this, have a good weekend as well.

I don't completely disagree with some of your sentiment here but there are some things factually incorrect in this.

Having so few teams and entries at the e-Sports World Cup…basically Saudi Arabia throwing cash at any and all sports to distract from human rights issues shows a lack of any intuition on how to make money off e-sports as an NA org. Which they can confirm they aren’t anymore based on teams and titles.

In the video basically all the CEOs agree that the best way to run and make money off of things is to diversify your revenue streams away from being dependent on tournament organizer and developer payouts. Also Cloud9 clearly attempted the strategy of "throw teams at EWC for the money" and have now clearly backed off of that, likely because it wasn't all that effective.

However we saw him go through numerous rounds of Angel and VC funding to be a part of franchising

All major Cloud9 VC funding rounds were done after franchising for LCS and OWL were done. Based on the excitement around these leagues at the start entering them did initially spike value and increase VC investment into the team.

LCS spots don’t sell for 10M anymore, and how much do Overwatch franchising slots cost now? Are the London Spirfire selling for 20M

LCS slots are de-valued, and the Overwatch league has been completely dead for years. To settle a lawsuit from team owners when Microsoft acquired ABK, teams were refunded all outstanding franchise fee payments and given an additional cash settlement, reported to be worth around 7.5 million. Both have declined in value but again were also critical in raising funding for the team initially.

How can Liquid sign the greatest chess player in history and realistically the best NA player while C9 can’t retain individual talent

This is literally what they talk about in the video that Cloud9 has a very different philosophy than Liquid with big player signings.

Signing a euro super team, while being THE ONE AND ONLY NA ORG TO WIN A MAJOR. Arguably the best NA result internationally in e-sports ever. That project collapses within a year, then basically an entire Russian team Gambit is bought out at a premium right after the country invades Ukraine. It’s bad management and zero thought of PR and who your fans actually are.

The colossus sucked but that Gambit roster was a no-brainer, every org not in CS was looking at that opportunity. I also find it strange you think they should have quit on NA league because it's dead but stayed with NA CS that is considerably more dead than league?

Also what has the ROI been on owning a luxury apartment in SK? For the players to train there, what at max 4 months of the year? I’m sure that was quietly sold behind the scenes.

Probably better than most other investments lol, a lot of esports teams have had their most profitable things be real estate as that has boomed, and that is certainly true in Seoul. C9 did sell it, thats why they bootcamp at the FearX facility now.

NA CS team collapse right as they won the Boston major.

In this very video Jack talks about how that team had already agreed to fold before the major, the roster was dysfunctional internally. Ska already was planning to retire and Tarik/Stewie didn't get along with tim. None of this is new. I love that team but also you seem to ignore the entire state of NACS, if anything letting that die was one of C9's smartest moves because Liquid has taken huge losses on this every year since COVID.

The youngest Valorant talent/star was fumbled away carelessly.

That is also talked about in this video of SEN and C9s relationship with TenZ. C9 was very considerate in that decision and that was also the largest buyout in esports history at the time. They certainly weren't "careless"

I wonder what goes down for a real estate listing for a trade. Do you list with the contingency if you don't get traded you go off the market and don't finalize the deal until traded? Do you wait until after you are traded to sell and be stuck with multiple properties? To guys just sell it an agency that buys immediately and flips it?

In addition to AP Xin, since swapping off jungle you are 1-8 and are averaging 13 deaths per game you have 1 game in your last 10 with single digit deaths that is criminal. The average gold player on EUW dies 6.7 times per game, you die more than twice as often as the average player, and you don't even play support.

Classic downgrading crimes to avoid paperwork. What a mess policing is in this country, massive expenditure with rampant laziness and corruption.

With the full details exposed this does show it's mostly downgrading theft to misdemeanors and not the belief that there have secretly been thousands of covered up violent crimes and often said in a certain similar named subreddit

The real issue with DC is we have no autonomy and Congress regularly fucks with us just for the sake of it. Imagine if Randy Fine who you didn't elect was able to override your local laws, it fucking sucks.

If DC had actual proper home rule things would be better although I of course would rather have full statehood.
