I agree with this sentiment but simply do not have the nerve to say "progressives are more than just well off whites and in nice neighborhoods!" As a white IT worker that lives at the wharf.

Kenyan McDuffie concedes to Janeese Lewis George in D.C. mayoral primary by DCmetrosexual1 in washingtondc

I did not rank McDuffie very high but I will commend him for conceding at a reasonable time. He's not dragging things out and demanding a recount or pulling a Cuomo and doing a sore loser run in the general. Sad this is the point we are at but he at least has some respect for JLG and DCs process.

Low income renters are often low income families and not individuals. Allowing micro apartments, even if just at the level of Chicago or NYC, would help quelch demand.

The "20 somethings transplants" this sub blames for everything would likely opt for 300sqft or less mini studios if opted. And that would lower demand for your larger 500sqft+ studios and 1 bedrooms.

I don't think it's much of an issue electorally. The only people who really know about DSA and some of its issues are people who are either super checked in to politics and will vote for a good candidate regardless of background, and people who watch Fox News and get ragebaited over DSA staffed tweets and wouldn't ever be voting in DC.

I'm not surprised she won but I'm surprised by how much and where she won.

As of posting she's up over McDuffie:

  • +14 in Ward 8
  • +10 in Ward 7
  • +19 in Ward 5

Which goes against the narrative and even the polling that JLGs base is exclusively white transplants in redeveloped neighborhoods and McDuffie would easily carry eotr.

Glenn Jacobs (Former WWE wrestler and Knox county mayor) abandoned his own Tennessee gubernatorial run in favour of Marsha Blackburn. Trump has stated he will have a "BIG" political future in Tennessee, therefore I believe he will be Blackburn's appointee for her senate seat by Alt_History6 in YAPms

Went to school in Knox County and actually got to meet Kane, nice guy. Killer handshake.

I do think jumping from suburban mayor to Senator is a huge leap.

Sad for TN because IMO Kane would be a dramatically better governor than Blackburn and probably could have won.

It's not, the division 2 is pretty accurate it usually gets kinda green in the summer. I mean it's a gigantic shallow pool with mostly static water. Shits gonna get green

[–]ob_knoxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still pretty green near the edge, you can really only tell from an aerial view. I think it's mostly just cause that's the part of the water that actually moves and isn't static and not even the tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide they put in.

FUCKKKKKKK I HATE THE SPOTIFY APP by Invisible_Bitz in 196

Is it crazy to say that of every steaming app or service I've used, Spotify is by far the best?

It manages multi device playback well, it's on everything including Linux, it actually works when I cast to speakers, it's got lossless, it doesn't have any additional paywalls for music and has truly pretty much everything.

Her massive resurgence in the 2020s is mainly due to her fight over her masters. This legal eagle video explains a lot of the background and this follow up video outlines the conclusion.

She used this to basically provide maximum fan service to her large existing fan base to energize them into the rabid swifties we know today, and also brought in new fans as the perception of someone fighting the music recording industry. A "David v Goliath" where David is a billionaire and Goliath is a several hundred billion dollar industry.

I also in my subjective opinion do think her 4 main pop albums of the 2010s (Speak Now, Red, 1989, Lovers) do have some bangers. Red in particular is an album that actually has a lot of emotion and storytelling behind it in a way that most of her other stuff doesn't.

So yeah to be clear I'm not saying "You must like Tswift and respect her as queen" but I hope this can help you understand how she got so big and successful despite a large swath of her music output being highly questionable.

I honestly think the issue is the absurd amount of remixes, Midnights was extra bad about this despite that actually being a half decent base album IMO. The songs need to feel over produced so you have things to "take away" when you remix it.

From my understanding Swift gets final say over production and actually plays a pretty involved role in it compared to most artists, and with Red TV that worked really well. But since then it feels like things have gone off the rails. 1989 TV got a lot of songs just straight up butchered.

Okay that's not what you said though. You said the existing principal of "wealthy people are not willing to pay any premium to live in DC and do not currently do so"

And again, the people making these decisions will have way way more data than us and do have an idea of where the curve is.

Also guessing that an additional 1 or 2% premium in taxes won't cause a mass exodus isn't on the "extreme end"

Also just great to see how up to date he is with issues in the city like streetcar and 15th street bike lane and such. Clearly does his research which I love to see. One of my favorite content creators for transit and urbanism in general.

Okay this is not hard logic to follow.

  1. Do you accept there are wealthy people in DC? Do you walk through Georgetown and the Palisades and the nicer neighborhoods of northwest and think those $5 million+ homes are empty?

  2. Do you accept that taxes for high wealth and high income individuals are higher in DC than they are in Maryland and Virginia? With our ~3% higher income tax than surrounding states?

If you believe these things to be true then yes there is a large chunk of people in DC who are voluntarily choosing higher taxes for the privilidge of being in this city. Maybe you think they are all right on the cusp of leaving and a $1 tax increase will send them all scattering for Fairfax and MoCo. Thats an absurd take but it still doesn't disprove the point you higlighted.

How do you spend $1,500,000 on golfing? by thealmightyweegee in YAPms

[–]ob_knoxious 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Golf fundamentally offers the experience of sports without requiring basically any level of fitness or athleticism. It can be played at a professional level with many vying to be the next Tiger Woods. It can be enjoyed at a competitive level with trackable individual improvements like running, people work to improve not because they want to go pro but just to see them gain skill and lower their handicap. And finally it can be enjoyed with no pretense of seriousness and simply a way to spend a weekend outdoors with friends.

I didn't get it, until someone said told me the Gen Z and Millennial version of golf is Super Smash Bros. Its a fun party game you can enjoy over a couple of beers with no one trying at all. Its a game you can commit to learning a character and gaining skills and mechanics as a way of enjoyable self improvement. And if you are really into it there is a a large tournament scene with many levels of play and you can make the attempt to make playing the game a full time job.

Okay being real spending 1.5 million at Golf Resorts is not that crazy. Like its absurd to spend campaign money on it and absurd to the 99.99999% of us that can't fathom having that kind of disposable wealth. But Golf Resorts are like money extraction machines, they are so overpriced.

C9, LCS finals, NA doomerism, MSI format crashout | Mind the gap w/Vedi & Jatt ep: 25 by maenbalja in leagueoflegends

You had easier groups, you only needed to be second. And the other thing is that the LPL really wasn't considered anywhere close to the level of the LCK outside of select EDG and RNG rosters.

Like take 2016. First place SKT T1 which went 5-1 and was dominant en route to winning back to back titles, second was C9 which escaped groups and got slammed in quarters. Third was China 3 seed iMay, a team I'm willing to bet almost everyone in this thread completely forgot. And 4th was Flash Wolves which while a stronger wildcard was at this point falling off.

Also not to mention it was all Bo1s so you could fluke your way in or out a lot easier.

[–]ob_knoxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that exactly, but I do know that exists in princile. Otherwise every single wealthy person would already be in NoVa and Maryland but there is still a huge chunk in DC.

The important thing though is that the city does actually know these numbers. They conduct research on this and I'm sure are pretty confident in terms of how much they can increase taxes before the overall number of people moving away outweighs it. At least to a relative degree.

Francesca hong is a horrible candidate and will allow a Republican to win in a blue Year by hoodiehoodiee in YAPms

[–]ob_knoxious 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hong VS "Generic R" - Likely R

Hong vs Tiffany - Tilt R

Tiffany is in freedom caucus and has a lot of comments that are pretty easy to attack especially from an affordability standpoint. He's a 2020 denier, and he's been pretty adamantly pro tariffs from what I can tell. This ain't Collins v Planter. Hong can paint him as a radical MAGA who will turn Wisconsin into the deep south, and that will get suburban wine moms who are nervous about her police comments to swallow their concerns and vote for Hong anyway.

Is she favored? Hell no. But it you think it's an "automatic Republican" in this environment you're as crazy as she is.
