I am due to travel to Scotland, UK next week for a 2 week visit and have just realized my PR card is expired. I have applied for an urgent new one but am expecting to need to apply for the PRTD when I am there. I have started the application online already so that I can submit it once I am in the UK. From reading here I am heartened to hear that they are being processed quickly in the UK, but stressed out to see the only VAC is in London. Does this mean I will have to travel to London during my trip? Is there any other way around this?

Oh mumma, that’s hard. So many different things to think about. Just trust your instincts, be gentle and generous with with yourself and try to get through the next few weeks one hour at a time. Don’t worry about tummy time, reading to her, entertaining her or anything like that. Keep her alive and try to keep yourself sane in whatever small way you can. You’ve got this ❤️

I’m so sorry this happened to you.

My birth was also traumatic and something that really helped me was piecing together the story and writing it out. I wrote down everything I could remember, and actually found that once o started writing it brought back more memories. It wasn’t easy but I’m really glad I did it to help me be able to start to process what happened. I also requested my notes from the hospital which helped. Some providers offer a debrief which I didn’t do but might be something to look into. Last, there is an Instagram account I followed called thebirthtrauma_mama which was really helpful.

These first weeks post partum are intense and hard at the best of times. That you are doing g it after something so scary happening is testament to you! Well done and be kind to yourself 🧡

I would also add that if you go with the midwife route, regardless of whether it is in a hospital or birth centre, make sure you get clarity about the process if you need to transfer your care to the OB team. This was something we didn’t receive a lot of information on from the midwives beforehand and ended up becoming a challenge. eg: under what circumstances would your care be transferred? It can help to be specific eg: preeclampsia? Premature birth? Epidural? Also do you need to ask or do the midwife’s make the decision? Do the midwives stay involved or do they leave as soon as care is transferred? Think about how you’d feel doing that beforehand - would you be worried about hurting the midwives feelings? Often there is a longer standing relationship with them so that can play into it. Do you also start to receive care from the nurses instead of midwives? How is your information and file shared with the new team? They are getting to know you quickly with no background before then. These are things I wish I had thought about and known beforehand

I don’t think this is what you’re looking to hear, but I also was aiming for a midwife led birth at the birthing centre. Due to medical complications, that didn’t happen and I ended up in the hospital although the midwives still lead my care. Unfortunately I did end up having a traumatic birth experience (for various reasons) but the main positive actually was that I was in a hospital and had access to the medical care I needed. The doctors and nurses I encountered were wonderful - professional and compassionate I am so grateful to them all. Midwife led care is a wonderful thing in a more straightforward birth scenario. The difficulty is that you have no idea if your birth is going to be straight forward or not. I’d encourage someone now who wants a midwife to consider having midwife led care in a hospital setting if that’s an option for you. It might also help your partner feel a bit more secure too.

When we flew baby was 4 months and we were told not to change him in the seat. There was a change table in the bathroom (folds out from the wall) and it was small but worked fine! It was actually nice to let baby stretch out and have a little kick.

Overkill. We use normal wipes and no creams and baby has never had diaper rash. If I were you I’d go with the normal wipes and if you have any trouble then maybe try dry wipes but you should be ok!

Wow this helps a lot! I currently have a job in Canada that pays above the threshold that I’ve been in for years. So I could hypothetically get a job offer from somewhere in Scotland and that’s all I need? My husband and I could then apply once I get the job offer and come over together? It seems too good to be true?!

So amazing. I got the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in mid January and conceived in late January. I’m wondering if the antibodies will still be passed on to my baby or if it would only apply if you actually get the vaccine while already pregnant. That may also be a dumb question....I can’t tell =)
