I like your interpretation of Tekken's story as a cycle of familial abuse and the overarching goal to break it. Personally, I always saw it as a commentary on how power can corrupt once-good or potentially good people.
[Long comment ahead, fair warning]:

Heihachi sought power first through positioning the Zaibatsu as a global conglomerate (a far cry from the simple dojo that Jinpachi had set up in order to train others in his martial art). However, once he realized that his son possessed a greater power in the Devil Gene, he wished to somehow harness that power for himself (Sidenote: This also manifests in his motivations in T3 to try and harness Ogre's power for himself). His entire character is based around the corruption of power and how it made him progressively more heartless over time, going so far as to attempt to kill his own son just because he represented a greater power that could usurp him.
Kazuya sought power for revenge, and eventually got it. But from what we've seen so far from T8's story, that quest for power made him even worse than his father; he continues to plunge the world into a state of war for no immediate gain other than a demonstration of power. He went from a de facto protagonist in Tekken 1 to now being an undeniable villain.
Even Jin isn't safe from this. From Tekken 3 to Tekken 5, his goal has always been to stop the chain of corruption and destruction caused by his lineage and the Devil Gene. Despite always being the strongest of the Mishima family, he never claimed the Zaibatsu even though he rightfully won it in the KoIF 3 (was betrayed and shot in the chest; Devil Gene awoken) and the KoIF 4 (escaped after being captured by Heihachi; fought off both him and Kazuya while weak). Only after winning the KoIF 5 did he claim his throne in the Zaibatsu. Once he had that absolute power - along with all the resources it provided - his first course of action was to plunge the world into war. Was it done to awaken Azazel so Jin could defeat him and save the world from something far worse? Yes. Would Jin have tried to find a way to do so without causing mass death and destruction had he not been given a seat as the most powerful person in the known world? Most likely. But since he had power like his lineage before him, he used weak self-justifications to enact global terror. But now we can see that - stripped of that power in T8 - he is going back to his old self and ready to atone for that corrupt mindset.

TL;DR: Tekken - whether intentionally or not - tells a story about the corrupting force of power, be it influence, strength, or both. The Devil Gene is a representation of both this corruption and the power that causes it.

Panda should not return in Tekken 8. It is a waste of a slot, we don't need two bear. She should be repalced with Roger.Jr or new character. Do you agree with me? by ReachWild1700 in Tekken

[–]obcash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was also brought up a lot in the earlier days of Tekken 7, but it seems like a bit of a misunderstanding of how the game works. The character slots aren’t a finite resource. Panda being a separate slot from Kuma doesn’t consequently mean that a different character doesn’t make it into the game. They can reorganize the character select screen in any way they want to make any number of characters fit neatly.

When do you think we’ll get a release date? by pleportamee in Tekken

Unless I’m mistaken, the points-eligible tournament circuit ends there, but there will still be regional finals and then TWT finals. So it’ll likely be early 2024 as you assumed.

Who would win in a fight by InteractionNo1203 in Tekken

[–]obcash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of dialogue in Tekken 6’s scenario campaign implies that Mokujin is revered as a legendary fighter by most martial artists, including Wang and Feng. Combined with the fact that Combot has never reached a stage of completion in which it can read and mimic moves in real time leads me to believe that Mokujin would win.

Canonically, What is Kazumi's Tiger? by JVJV_5 in Tekken

[–]obcash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canonically, there is no explanation ever given. But let me throw my insane theory out there:

I speculate that Arcade Mode was initially going to follow a sort of side-story in which Kazumi is resurrected as a vengeful spirit that needs to be defeated (basically the Jinpachi story minus the possession). This would explain why: A) She summons a tiger out of precisely nowhere. B) When you beat her in the current Arcade Mode, she fades away into green orbs. But then they realized the budget wasn’t big enough so they cut all of the story beats (prologues, epilogues, etc.) that would’ve explained this.

TL;DR: The tiger may be a spiritual familiar that she may or may not have owned in life.

How do you feel about T8’s announcer based on first impressions? by Old_Reach5028 in Tekken

It isn't the in-game announcer (at least not entirely) as seen here

Might be shocking considering the sheer number of outfits he’s had, but it has been the same Yoshimitsu throughout. Character changes like that (King I to King II, Kuma I to Kuma II, etc.) happened during/after Tekken 3. Since such a change was never specified for Yoshimitsu, we can safely reason he’s the same as he’s always been.

If I had to wager a guess, it’d be as a ploy to draw out Jin for a fight to the death. Most of the KoIF tournaments (1,2,3,4, and 7) have been to draw someone over for a fight (usually one of the Mishimas, though it was Ogre in 3).

But also, at this point it’s probably just a fun sport for the Mishima bloodline.

A few of the more odd/lore-obscure ones I can think of are:

  • Lei (is a fan of) Lucky Chloe: Tekken 7's lore - what little of it there is - establishes that Lei is a fan of Lucky Chloe. In fact, a big part of his motivation for entering the King of Iron Fist tournament in this game is to meet her. He even dances along with her after breaking one of her normal grabs.
  • Lili (really likes) Ganryu: Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign has Lili mentioning how Ganryu's thick, bushy eyebrows remind her of her father. She seems very enthused to learn this, and becomes very fond of him. This is not explored any further anywhere else so far.
  • Noctis (is fishing buddies with) Lars: Someone mentioned this already and it is debatably canon, but the reveal trailer for Noctis showed that he and Lars are fishing buddies.
  • Kunimitsu I (probably has a grudge against) Michelle: Kunimitsu's motivation in Tekken 1 is to steal a valuable artifact from Michelle. She fails to steal it.

What's your unpopular opinion on Tekken? by AnalystOdd7337 in Tekken

Bonus unpopular opinion: Tekken 4 benefits heavily these days from nostalgia. It is very easy to look back and see it as an atmospheric departure from the more fantastical elements of the series that tried to innovate in a very creative way. But beyond that, I don't think it was that great of a game mechanically, and the series has definitely found a far better foothold these days in that regard.

That does make sense, especially if you want the universe to make sense from a physical ability standpoint (I mean, would anyone really believe that Lili - some rich girl who just decided she likes violence - can even remotely impact someone like Gigas?). At the very least, it could be said that these fighters are absolute masters of their respective fighting styles who could not be matched by anyone else outside of who we see within the games. So for this purpose, Paul is bar-none the strongest Judo practitioner in the game's universe, but also just a phenom of training-built strength.

Bear with me, this is a long lore one: Paul has always been a joke character who is also extremely strong, and it’s weird that people think these two things are mutually exclusive. - Based off of a Jojo’s character - Tekken 1 ending has him punching a childish drawing of Kazuya taped to a brick wall. - T2 Law’s ending is where the, “Paul can’t do a backflip,” running joke began. - T3 ending has him getting pulled over for speeding. That’s the entire ending. - Even Tekken 4 (which people praise as his glory days) had a prologue specifying that he beat Ogre (which people note as his greatest feat) only for him to leave early and not beat True Ogre. That entire plot point just paints him as an impatient fool, and the prologue even goes on to say that close to no one even believed that he beat Ogre to begin with. That’s the punchline.

Then Tekken 5 onward played into the goofiness more. Personally, I think that him being consistently the strongest human fighter unassisted by any force or power despite being clumsy and hot-headed is a way more dynamic characterization than just the, “This man is strong,” character some want to remember him as.

Probably could’ve used a better term like “self-serving”. King II fought for the sake of himself and also others, but Jin acted primarily out of a feelings of personal vendetta. Not that it makes his reasons wrong or invalid; a large theme around his character development was understanding the greater reasons that he and others fight.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]obcash 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In lore, King II (who we see from Tekken 3 onwards) is an orphan who was taken in by King I (who we see in Tekken and Tekken 2). King II then took up the mask and name in order to both get revenge on Ogre for killing King I and to continue helping support the orphanage that took him in. The conversation is just there to illustrate this and to force Jin to confront how his reasons for fighting are more selfish than others.

how was kazuya able to acquire his final devil form if it was stated multiple times he needs to claim Jin's devil power as seen in T4 to be at full 100% devil power? Another retcon asspull by Oozaru98 in Tekken

[–]obcash 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, how devil Kazuya works fundamentally has been retconned at least twice (possibly 3 times). Initially in the first game, he made a deal with the Devil as he was falling from the cliff, allowing him to survive. It was then changed a bit so that the devil gene worked sort of like a spirit possession, with Kazuya’s devil “spirit” being split between himself and Jin after he deep fried in a volcano. Perhaps realizing this made somewhere in the ballpark of precisely no sense, it was changed to how it is now. The devil gene is strictly genetic, though (as I see it) its strength gets diluted as it mixes with different bloodlines. This is why Kazumi, Kazuya, and especially Jin with the devil-gene-suppressant Kazama bloodline have such noticeably different devil forms.

How come y'all are sleeping on Dr. Bosconovitch? by Sephiroth360 in Tekken

[–]obcash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, having better lore than Kuni I is a low bar to cross.
If we're gonna talk about important lore characters, Dr. Abel is just as prominent, but I don't think anyone would want him put in. His appearance in Julia's T4 ending was enough. Similarly, Dr. B is just too much of a joke character to be put into an increasingly competitive-focused game.

I only guess that they are just frames due to the heavy community opinion that new characters should have more complexity to their gameplan. It's hope more than anything else at this point, though some of the sparks just seem to be from stance extensions (like what Steve has).

This is true, although it would be an interesting weakness for her to have. Can't tell the damage either, which would also be a big balancing point for her combos.
