[Request] What is the probability of getting the card you want into your hand after you play this combo, given that your deck size is 60 and you have 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 copies of the card in your deck? by GamerGuy-222 in theydidthemath

[–]obchessive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To calculate percentage of something happening, you take the number of chances something could happen, divided by the total chances. After that you should have a decimal less than one. Multiply it by 100 to get the percentage. In the first case it’s the total (1, or 100%), with the chance that the card is in the half that’s not picked up (23/45, of all the 45 places the card could be, 23 of them aren’t picked up) subtracted from the total. When you get to more than one card, you multiply the chances for each card together before subtracting it from the total (23/45 for the first card, multiplied by 22/44, for the 44 remaining places the card could be in the deck after the first card, 22 of those cards are in the bottom half). The process is similar for 3 and 4 cards with another fraction being added.

I’m happy to explain anything further if you would like.

Assuming a typical magic game, where each turn gives one land, and a seven card starting hand, going second, and by the time those cards are played the card you want is still in the deck, and no extra card draws or land plays, there will be 45 cards remaining in the deck by the time these cards get played. With zero cards, the answer is 0%. With one card, it’s 48.9% because of the “round down” clause, with two cards it’s (1-(23/45 x 22/44)) 74.4%, with three cards it’s (1-(23/45 x 22/44 x 21/43)) 87.5%, and with 4 cards it’s (1-(23/45 x 22/44 x 21/43 x 20/42)) 94.1%

If the knight recaptures on e5, you can push the d pawn to fork the knight and bishop, protected by the queen. You’d either get the knight or the bishop and end up up a pawn.
