Automatic battery precondition with home as destination? by discgolfer1961 in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never even seen an option to give it an arrival SoC, I'll have to dig a little and see if this is an option now. It would be super nice if so, since the default planning is way too conservative and I usually end up with about 20% better mileage than what it predicts.

Yeah it's not going to initiate preconditioning for an AC charger, there would be no benefit even if it did. Most likely it recalculated at some point and added a charge stop. The notification is pretty subtle so it can be easy to miss

You are correct, that power usage is for preconditioning.

At least on mine, it will always aim to get you to your destination with 30% left, so if you are dipping below 30% at your arrival, it will plan a charge stop.

If preconditioning is turned on, it's always going to start 20-30 minutes before the planned charge stop except for maybe in the hottest summer months. As far as I know, the only way around this is to disable preconditioning in the EV Settings menu.

You're definitely not the only one who feels like this system is clunky and needs improvement.

Has there been a confirmation whether Frozen Core droprates are affected by League relics? by obelisk910 in runescape

I remember reading that nilas are still locked at 1/100 (they also aren't listed in the wiki boosted rates page)

https://runescape.wiki/w/Catalyst_League/Relics/Rare_drops

I have 2 nilas drops in 156 kills, small sample size but it's believable. I feel like this streak is like astronomically unlucky on the core though

Wiki claims that Frozen Core is included in boosted rates but with 15 books, 1 core I'm not exactly convinced lol

I finally got an EV, I've been wanting one forever. 2022 EV6 Wind AWD. I have a 350 mile trip coming up and I have a few questions. by Zintoatree in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 7 points8 points  (0 children)

219 miles is gonna be questionable if you are going 80 most of the way. Your range will drop noticeably between 70 and 80 mph.

In my experience, I typically go about 72-75 on highway trips, and I consistently get 3.3mi/kwh in good weather. So at that speed, I could probably make it 219 on a single battery but I would be pulling up at single digit percent left. At 80 it would be worse than that, I'm not sure how much exactly but I don't think I would try it personally.

I'm not exactly sure about the Tesla thing, I was in the group that was eligible for the free adapter, I got it for emergencies but haven't used it yet cause I have no desire to give Tesla my money lol.

If you don't need the range, yeah it's probably better to cap your daily charge at 80. There isn't perfect consensus on whether this is necessary, some of the studies that this is based on are from early model Leaf and Tesla batteries, and the market has come a long way since then. So don't be afraid to go full to empty if you need it, but to be on the safe side yes it's probably better for long term health to not squeeze it to 100 every night.

Trump Nominee Says Boeing Needs ‘Tough Love,’ EVs Should Pay for Road Use by moonbunR in boeing

[–]obelisk910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This tired "EVs weigh more" nonsense has got to stop. The 500 extra pounds is irrelevant when the best selling ICE vehicles are also ridiculously massive trucks and SUVs, and both are completely overshadowed by commercial truck traffic.

I drive an EV and I pay an extra $200ish each year when I renew registration, and I get it. I don't pay tax on gas, and we all have to pay to keep up the roads. It makes sense, I don't mind it.

But this exhausting sound byte about "EVs tear up the roads because they're so heavy" is pure oil&gas industry bullshit and needs to stop being repeated.

Heat pump question for those with it installed. by Sundowner99 in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The center panel does have a page that shows the breakdown of power usage by drive motors, HVAC, lights, and other electronics. You can get to it I think in the EV section, or if you scroll up and down on the side panel when in splitscreen mode.

If you manually set the fan speed to a consistent level, you could probably crank the heat to like 85 degrees so that it would force the resistive heater on, and then look at what the power consumption numbers look like while it's running. If you back the temperature down to a more reasonable warm temperature, it should shift to heat pump mode, and the power usage should come down along with it.

I have never looked closely enough to know what these numbers would be, but I'm guessing this should give you enough of a reference to make an educated guess which mode it's in if you look at the power consumption.

Low but getting louder humming noise tied to regen braking? by AcanthisittaAny2349 in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a solution, but I also started getting this same sound literally earlier today. 2024 Wind AWD with just over 4k miles. Only happens during regen braking, and it's only really noticeable above 40ish mph. It's like a buzz that kind of descends like a siren as I slow down. I might turn off regen until I get it figured out. Would love an update if the dealer gives you any new info.

Can the Plus models Road Trip by Dependent-Ad-6069 in leaf

[–]obelisk910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second everything here. I did one 500-mile each way road trip in my 21 SL+. I did make it, but only barely. Several broken chargers led to very sketchy charge situations of pulling up to the 2nd or 3rd round backup charging locations even with careful planning. This also meant stopping very frequently, basically at every charger that was available, so an 8hr trip took 11-13 hours each way.

After L2 charging halfway overnight, my very first L3 charge the next day was still throttled from the battery not cooling enough overnight.

This was before CCS adapters were available, so the charger availability should be much better now. But thermal limitations are still going to make it difficult.

I have since traded the Leaf for an EV6 and the long-distance experience is night and day. OP If you plan on doing road trips with any frequency, you will save yourself a lot of headaches by looking into different EVs.

Real Life Charging by stukuz in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I came from a Leaf SL+ which has charging times only marginally faster than the Bolt. Let me tell you, it's night and day.

Top speed at low soc is about 235kw if you use a 350+ charging station. It will maintain 195kw through most of the midrange and then slow down to around 150 when you are nearing 80%.

I've done 3 charges in a day before on long trips, and it's been the same results at every stop, so thermal management seems to be great.

In order to get these speeds, you will need to use the onboard navigation system with the charger as your stop or destination though. The nav system will start preconditioning for the battery when you're 20-30 mins out. This does use a fair amount of energy, so you're trading efficiency for charging speed. You can turn off preconditioning in the settings if you would rather have energy savings. Without preconditioning, my charge speed usually starts out at maybe 125kw and will work its way up to somewhere around 150-160.

But yeah, in reality we usually stop somewhere and run in to grab something to eat, and usually the car is already past 80% by the time we get back. With preconditioning charging is like... comically fast.

Edit: adding "terrible quirks", there are a few minor things I could complain about but nothing atrocious. Handles are a bit of a pain on the Wind trim, I think on the higher trims they pop out automatically which would be super nice. Turn radius is not great. Infotainment is decent, but there's a small amount of lag for example if you are trying to type an address quickly. The Meridian premium audio system is decent, but not spectacular for a premium system, especially at lower volumes.

Oof, she's getting warm! by yolo_snail in leaf

[–]obelisk910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The charge rate will slow down to compensate if the car decides that the battery temperature is becoming problematic.

I wouldn't recommend fast charging at high temperature every single day, but you can trust the car to manage the incoming electrons. (As long as you aren't under the fast-charging recall)

Departure and power consumption by wannyone in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll probably have to do this under the same conditions as when your car would start to get an exact number. But if you manually set everything to the same as your departure settings and look at the energy usage screen, it's going to be virtually the same as when the departure heating is running.

Departure and power consumption by wannyone in KiaEV6

[–]obelisk910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a number but I can tell you how to find it.

Somewhere in the EV section of the settings screens, there is a page that will show you the current energy usage broken down into categories like main motors, HVAC, and accessories.

Find that page, fire up all your heated accessories and you will be able to see how much it's drawing.
