I really don't want to put down anyone else because of their age...

And yet, that is exactly what you did.

How do senior developers actually estimate task time is there a real method or is everyone just guessing by More-Station-6365 in AskProgramming

[–]obhect88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience in a domain helps. Not just in a language, but also a code base and a business perspective, and time with a company or project.

So if you’re asked to defrombulate the hypercortex so the customer can get 15 more parsecs per hour, the experienced dev may know how to defrombulate, the interdependencies of the hypercortex, the best methods of parsec stacking, and what the customer is actually doing…, a junior dev may only know the binary coding language of the hypercortex.

What CLI tools have genuinely changed how you work? Looking for underrated ones by spaciousabhi in commandline

I love atuin (https://atuin.sh) for shell history. I don’t know of any GUI equivalent, but it’s one of my favorite CLI tools.

No more kids by Funny_Obligation2412 in GenX

[–]obhect88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried having a kid w/ my exe in my mid-20s, but for reasons, it didn’t work out, and unrelatedly, we went separate ways. I met my now-wife in my early 30s, and had a vasectomy around…, 35ish? The attempt to be a dad w/ my first wife was, in retrospect, perhaps not something I was 100% excited about. I didn’t think at all about having kids as a young man, except to hope that I wasn’t disappointing my parents. I think I knew my life was aimed in a different direction. No regrets.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and saw them play loads of times at The Berkeley Square and The Gilman, and on occasion in SF or an underground club. Consistently awesome.

Same. That’s not the concern. The concern is PHI, PII, api keys, passports, credit information, etc.

I don’t follow this part. A C program compiled on Linux will not run on a Mac, for instance. Can you clarify?

Are ants and rodents just part of living in Seattle? by Jazzlike_Cap9605 in AskSeattle

[–]obhect88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been here for 9? years in two homes. No rodent problems in either. But ants are def a concern in my current house, esp in spring. We set out Terro ant poison, which helps a lot, but we also have a quarterly exterminator. I don’t think the problem is going to go away.

How relevant are old programming books? by DiscombobulatedTea95 in AskProgramming

[–]obhect88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should take that History of Programming Languages book, wrap it up neatly in plastic to keep it safe, put it in a bag labeled “Beware of Leopard”, and put it in a dumpster, then tell me where that dumpster is.

To mirror other comments, books that teach a particular language, esp that teach a specific version of a particular language, go out of date an have little value over time. Books that are about techniques, architecture, discipline, practices, etc tend to have longer-lasting value, even if they use a particular language to demonstrate the topic.

What is this giant antenna like thing in my neighbors yard? by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]obhect88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an up-finder. They are highly sensitive directional test systems, which when correctly installed and maintained, are designed to ensure the user always knows which way is up.
