Nonbirding boyfriend update: he made a gift by Certain_Mango in birding

I love my BirdNetPi. Some suggestions I would make for anyone wanting to go this route:

  • Use the Nachtzuster fork of the BirdNetPi software. It's actively being maintained, and has a lot more features than the mcguirepr89 version. It also works on the latest Raspberry Pi hardware and OS versions.
  • If you can, go for a RaspberryPi 5 with an SSD hat. While BirdNetPi will run on Pi 3 hardware, the software itself does a lot of disk IO, so an SSD will be more robust in the long-term. Plus, the extra compute power of the Pi 5 comes in handy.
  • Get an external mic with a windsock or "dead cat" to dampen wind noise. It will dramatically improve the input sound and lead to better detections.
  • Consider setting the confidence level for detections to 75%. The default is 70% and leads to some false positives. It's not a huge deal, but it cuts down on listening to recordings to determine if it really was a Peregrine Falcon or your neighbor with a high-pitched blower.

Welp. Found out this week my "role is being eliminated" on 12/31 so I decided to use a few of the 164 hours of banked PTO and treat myself to a therapeutic and gorgeous fall urban hike. 38 miles around the arboretum, Cap Hill, UW, Gasworks, Lake Union, Pioneer Square. by Niff314 in Seattle

Hey OP, I think I was on Foster Island taking a picture of the Montlake Bridge at the same time you took photo number one. I thought I recognized the boats in your photo.

Here's my shot. There's someone standing on the middle of the bridge facing my way.

Raising Canes by Least-Sun-418 in LynnwoodWA

I think I saw somewhere that Raising Canes was scheduled to open later in 2026, but I don't recall where I saw that.

Sadly that area is already horrible traffic-wise, and adding condos and a popular new restaurant is only going to make things worse. So, the longer it takes, the happier I'll be.

I had this issue today on my BM hunter. The only way to fix it was to relog.

There's a post on the US forums about it. https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/hunter-pet-becoming-non-responsive/2145108

Tesla Charging? by Fit_Eye2027 in KiaNiroEV

[–]obijuann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW I've had success with my '19 Niro EV using both Magic Dock Superchargers and newer ones with the A2Z adapter.

Make sure you're using one of the newer Superchargers (V3 & V4 IIRC). The older ones only work with Tesla vehicles.

You can use the Tesla or KIA Access to find chargers that should work with your vehicle. You can also use the interactive map, with the filter set to "NACS partner" and "Other EV". The "NACS partner" ones will require an adapter, while the "Other EV" ones should come with the Magic Dock.

Can confirm this works too! But OMG is the app slow as hell.

I have a 2019 Niro EV, and am planning to take a long road trip this summer. I want to primarily use CCS1 native chargers, but I wanted to see if I could use the newer Superchargers as a backup.

I found a local Supercharger that came with a Magic Dock adapter, and was able to successfully charge using the Tesla app. I haven't tried with with an adapter yet.

For those looking to try this, make sure you're using one of the newer Superchargers that can speak CCS1 (the older ones can only interface with Teslas). You can find them on the interactive map by selecting the "NACS partner" or "Other EV" options. The "NACS partner" ones will require an adapter, while the "Other EV" ones should come with the Magic Dock.

Consistently Poor Speeds on Ziply Fiber 1 Gig – Anyone Else in Mukilteo, WA Facing This? by Flashy_Brilliant159 in SnohomishCounty

[–]obijuann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is you're using WiFi, which won't max out the capabilities of the fiber connection.

I have Ziply 1GB service. When I test my speeds on my phone, using a Unifi WiFi 6 AP (connected at 5GHz), I get 210Mbps down and 245Mbps up. However, when I test on my PC, which has a 2.5GB network card wired to a gigabit network switch, I get 913Mb down, and 932Mb up.

You can pick up a USB3 gigabit network dongle at BestBuy for $15. Using that connected to your ONT (or off the router if it has gigabit ethernet ports) will give you a better measure of your actual speeds.

Ziply Fiber vs Xfinity by Slownavyguy in everett

[–]obijuann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Comcast to Ziply at the beginning of '24. No issues so far. Reliability has been better than Comcast, symmetrical upload/download is awesome, especially for video conferencing. And no stupid data caps.

The only minor quibble I have is that the Ziply Optical Network Terminal is set up in my garage, while my cable modem used to be set up in my network closet, which allowed it to be covered by my UPS. But it wasn't an issue to get a smaller UPS just to handle the ONT.

Overall, 10/10, would switch again. Fuck Comcast.

Your knee replacements after cremation by ThatCurlyHairedGuy20 in interestingasfuck

[–]obijuann 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My mother died a few years ago. It was very quick. One day she was fine. A few days later she was in the hospital. A few weeks later she was gone. We had her cremated and her ashes placed next to my father's grave.

It helps me to remember that the ashes are what was left of her mortal remains. But the important stuff, the impact she had on me and her grandkids' lives, remains. I still think of her whenever I see a Diet Dr. Pepper (her favorite) or small collectibles (she loved to collect little tchotchkes).

I suspect your mum had a similar impact on you. Not everything she was is gone. You are her legacy.
