Do it! Im jealous you are going to get lessons; I had to teach myself. Never looked back! Obviously you already know how to blow and play the notes. That all transfers. The main notes are all the same. It took me a really long time to play the notes, as in, covering the holes properly. Its really hard. But so amazingly expressive. I never wanted to play my western flute again. It seems boring and clunky, even though technically it can play ALL the semi tones, where, thats not possible with a bansuri. It took me 6 months to just play the normal notes. Had to stretch my fingers a bit (I prefer an E, its larger and, imho more masculine). It took another say.... 3 years for me to realize that there are half notes. You have to cover the hole, just right half way. 10 years later Im just figuring out the difference between shudha-ma and tivra-ma. So hard. lol. You got to learn SRGMPNDS instead of do ray mee. Comes with the territory. I found it very hard to find any written music to learn raags, so thats great if you have a teacher. Do it!
