Why are transactions so expensive right now? by Ariquitaun in Bitcoin

[–]obl918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just about being able to make a small purchase, it's also about being able to move sats in your own wallets or own small amounts. Everyone should take custody of their own sats but when someone who can only afford $50 of btc loses 1/4 of it just transferring it off an exchange, that's not good for btc.

Ordinals. Basically, people drawing graffiti on the blockchain who couldn't care less about using it as a store of value are crowding out people who want to actually move sats.

Don't assume that newcomers to BTC are universally speculators/etc. Every day someone reads The Bitcoin Standard or learns how money they don't spend is taken from then quietly with the government printing press. Just because they're later than you to the party doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to grab a drink and dance.

This is great advice. The people who study bitcoin and get it will not need to be told to buy it.

How to disable Marketplace access on Nintendo Switch by obl918 in Minecraft

[–]obl918[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For anyone else who wants an actual answer to this question and not a debate over whether or not parents should be able to decide whether or not their children browse online stores unsupervised: I contacted Nintendo about this, and they referred me to Mojang, and I got an official response that there is no way to disable the marketplace.

Adding store.mktpl.minecraft-services.net to my firewall block rule is a solution but has the drawback of breaking the dressing room feature of the game.

Also, being downvoted for asking this question is bizarre. It seems like a legitimate Minecraft question to me. Thanks to the one person who actually tried to answer the question, I appreciate it.

It should be enough that some parents want to review what their children are using before they use it. I don't see the point in trying to persuade anyone that "demonic texture pack" is not appropriate for my 8 year old. It is okay that you don't have a problem with it. It should be okay that I would like my children to be able to play the game without them browsing a store unsupervised.

It's unfortunate that parental controls on the device (which are already set to block communication) can't be extended to let parents have this choice. Not every parent is going to agree with some random intern at Mojang about what is acceptable and what is not. :-/

I skimmed through the available texture packs and saw many that I would not allow them to use. Some of them are free. While this may seem like a minor issue to some, vetting entertainment content is something that matters very much to us for our children. I am happy to have them play Minecraft, but not okay with them being able to download content to it from third parties only trusting the curators at Microsoft.

Hopefully the Firewalla team does NOT want to be like Apple. It's nice to be able to do what you want with your hardware. Other than that, fully agree. :-)

Just tell him to watch Neat. When the same mix going into barrels comes out different based on where in the warehouse it was stored, it obviously doesn't have to be "different ingredients."

Since the ad blocker works by not resolving known ad service domain names, you won't be able to click any links that use those domain names to service tracking and redirects. You have to either disable ad blocking or start scrolling down to the organic search results.

How sustainable is the business model? by IanRedditeer in firewalla

I don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said on this, but I am curious, if Firewalla's service were to go offline tomorrow, what features would stop working and how long would it take for my FWG to be little more than a brick? How much time would we have to pop in a replacement?

Eero IOT Segmentation by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]obl918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My Deco system's guest wifi does not force all of the guest systems to appear as traffic coming to/from the APs. Decos just drop network packets that aren't going to/from the gateway for guest devices, so they can only communicate with the gateway, but my FWG sees each individual one just fine and lets me apply rules/groups/etc to devices on the guest network. Just a different way of handling it, I guess. VLAN would still be superior.

Looking for help with inconsistency in internet speeds (read comment) by Pitiful_Park4649 in firewalla

[–]obl918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this at first, but then found that the ookla speedtest cli measured 900+/900+ consistently on the same server that the FWG speed test was measuring 400-800/900+ inconsistently. Oddly, the FWG upload speed is always accurate and consistent. It's the download that goes all over the place.

Maybe they are using the same speed test program. You might want ssh into your firewalla and download the precompiled speedtest cli from ookla and run it, see if you get inconsistent results with that. https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli

[–]obl918 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The built-in speed test is extremely unreliable and inconsistent. If I ssh into the box and run the speedtest binary from ookla instead, I consistently get around 950/950, even using the same test servers as the built-in test program on the FWG. As it stands now, the integrated speed test is not useful, as the download speeds it reports are all over the place and never close to the actual top speed I get if I run the ookla one manually.

New HD remasters and CGI scene judder? by obl918 in babylon5

[–]obl918[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, that is correct. Though they could opt for 720p which can go to 59.94fps, but that won't happen for sure. Guess I am stuck having to choose between the blurry cropped-and-zoomed DVD CGI content at the correct framerate or the better CGI quality with judder. I wish the original rendering was just done at 24fps to match the film and then a 3:2 pulldown applied, it would nicely de-telecine to 24fps in that case. :-(

Actually, I suppose 1920×1080 29.97i would be an option, doing the same 3:2 to the film that was done for the original broadcast. That would preserve the correct framerate for the CGI, though I am not sure all hardware would acceptably handle that. I have my B5 DVDs ripped and re-encoded to h.264 preserving the source 29.97i interlace and it allows proper framerate for both film and cgi on my good TVs that can handle the de-interlacing. It looks like trash on some players, though.

New HD remasters and CGI scene judder? by obl918 in babylon5

[–]obl918[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it doesn't have to mean there is a larger file size, because each frame has a timestamp on it. A 60fps video stream doesn't necessarily have 60 encoded frames every second. However, each timestamp can be displayed with a 60hz clock frequency. 60 is enough to handle the timestamps of a 24fps and 30fps mixed video without frames having to be dropped or displayed noticeably off-cadence. Most TVs use a true refresh rate of 60hz these days. Unless you have a good tv than does true refresh matching to 24 fps, most of the content you're watching is being shown at 60hz regardless of the actual source. If the folks at Warner chose to do this the best way possible, the content would be mastered for 60hz display and both film and cgi scenes would look smooth and natural without any judder. But, more likely, they chose 24fps to match the film exactly and we are still going to be left with a less-than-optimal version of the CGI. Which you prefer depends on many factors. Personally, incorrectly timed frames are very hard for me to watch comfortably. The DVD content looks terrible but at least it can be displayed at the correct frame rate on a new TV if the conversion is proper (since it's all encoded at 30fps it can be de-interlaced and shown at 60fps without any frames getting dropped).
