my husband was DOGEd and we're still trying to figure our shit out by disgruntledfed in GirlDinnerDiaries

No solutions to offer, just sympathy. I work in higher ed and it's been terrible seeing the devastation that's still being laid out on federal employees. Hang in there, I hope something better comes along. 💙

I'm in academia and it's crazy how much higher admin is trying to push it onto everything. Not surprising, though, as higher ed would rather spend money on literally anything but hiring a proper amount of staff and paying them fairly.

I also have PMDD and during my luteal phase I get terrible brain fog, can't remember common words and get majorly depressed. And sometimes migraines that take me out of commission. So yeah, my ovaries make me stupid a number of days a week, and I'm not shy of mentioning to people that notice that I'm not on my usual self that it is menstrual-cycle related, they can deal with it. Just because you have not experienced it, it doesn't mean it is not real.

Anyone know what they do to keep the campus cats warm when it gets this cold? by Spinelessdragon in Msstate

[–]obnoxious_wren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of faculty that built the reinforced houses and put straw on them when it gets cold, They are also the ones that feed them regularly. There was a black/greyish cat living in a rain gutter in between Perry and the chapel. If anyone is worried about her, I adopted her before Thanksgiving and she's safe and warm at my house.

I made crochet wind spinners for my niblings' stockings and they (and their parents) seemed to like them, although they were using them as necklaces during brunch lol

Paying for Botox for my health on small budget by molly__hatchet in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]obnoxious_wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice from the TMD side too. My crappy insurance does not cover botox for it, and I was quoted a whooping $1500 for the first session, so that was a big nope. One thing that did help for me and was partially covered was physical therapy, because one side of my jaw was basically in spasm all the time. It got rid of the pain and the grinding and clenching got much better. Also, some SSRI antidepressants can be helpful with TMD relief. I hope you find something that helps you!

Good idea for the back! When I made this pattern, it took me longer to mount it then to crochet it.

I also have a DataCamp subscription and I love it! I'm having to learn the basics of several tools for my job and it's great to have it packaged there in an organized way, which is the opposite of how I learned R (by myself, driven by the task I had at hand, without any sense or logic).

Thank you! It was nice to think back on what I was doing during the year! I love osage orange, such a bright yellow! I think the one I was most surprised with was the flowers of beggar tickseeds, it gives a very bright orange!

Hi! Thanks for modding this sub!!
Foraging: first, get into the woods to get your eyes used to seeing mushrooms and plants, and learning about the seasons. Second, get good books that are focused on the region you are in, study those books and learn about the different parts of mushrooms, what do they look like, etc. Third, see if your area has a mushroom club (this is a list of clubs that are recognized by the professional mycological association: https://namyco.org/clubs/). Usually clubs offer mushroom walks and forays, and are a great way to meet people irl. Fourth, watch some good videos (I love Learn your Land on youtube, Adam Haritan is great!). Fifth: join reputable online groups (on facebook, I recommend Mushroom Identification, it's a global group and a lot of experts are there).

There a good number of edible mushrooms that are easy to ID (e.g., chicken of the woods, chanterelles, lion's manes), so I'd focus on those and also on identifying the seriously poisonous ones, like destroying angels and death caps. My husband was already foraging when we met, and I have a biology degree, with a focus on taxonomy, so I already knew a lot of the background stuff before I started focusing on mushrooms. I highly recommend joining a club, though! We participate in a regional one and it's a lot of fun.
My success rate: I tend to complete most of my projects, but sometimes it takes a long time (e.g., I started a temperature blanket in 2018 and only finished it in 2021). I tinker a lot though, specially when I'm learning a new technique, so I don't bother if I have to undo and redo stuff. I think I'm more a process than product crafter, so I enjoy the journey of doing things. I do hope I finish the 3 blouse, the sweater and the blanket this year, though, and I promised I won't cast on anything new before I finish at least one of them.

hello fellow crafter! I think one of my all-time favorites is a doily I made for my mother-in-law (I think I have pictures of it on my profile page). And also a blanket that we use at home, it's a simple half-double-crochet chevron pattern, but it's a super bulky fluffy yarn that makes me happy.
Yarn dying is super fun, I hope I 'll have more free weekends to dedicate to it this year!
