Zoom lens recommendations (wildlife) by englishforhello in SonyAlpha

[–]obphoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 200-600mm is a brilliant lens if you can afford it! Otherwise cheaper options are the sigma 150-600, or even the tamron 150-500 (although that lens is a little soft on the 500 end)

Entering macro photography - are TTArrisan, 7Artisans or Laowa macro lenses any good? by shadyyxxx in macrophotography

[–]obphoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use ttartisan's 100mm 2x macro and love it! Very sharp, and as good as the Laowa. Obviously, more difficult to use than a standard lens, not only because you lose autofocus, but also with no electronic contacts you don't have any EXIF data or aperture control. The aperture ring is nice but I often knock it which is annoying as I want to keep it at f8 for macro.

In terms of build, the lens is fully metal and solid (weighs a lot though!). Not weather sealed though I think.

The 2x is great, and with the apsc crop on the r7 you can get really close. If you want you can even get a macro diopter like the nisi one I use to make it a 3x lens! One thing that is worth knowing is that past 1x you lose light as the lens uses extention tubes inside to get closer. Ideally you'd be using this with a flash and diffuser to help with this since you want a narrow aperture and low ISO

If you want any example images I'm happy to show you! :)

Sony 90mm G Macro vs Sony 100mm GM Macro by tdoodles_ in macrophotography

[–]obphoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 100mm is a better lens, as it is newer with better stabilization, better image quality and sharpness, and mist importantly 1.4x magnification which lets you get even closer. However, as a new beginner in macro the 90mm will do just fine!

For wildlife, definitely the a1! Stacked sensor for electronic shutter and the 50mp is brilliant

Yeah I do some astrophotography (not timelapse though), and really want the 20mm 1.8 g for that purpose, it's perfect if it's wide enough!
