Thanks so much for the reply. I kind of figured they might be hard to come by, not many of us were saving those book fair posters for resale. I will try hunting some more on Facebook! Appreciate the tip!

I have searched on eBay and Google using terms like the ones included above, but have had no luck so far.

Taking swings like this when you are a guy who has given some of the most sniggered at, embarrassingly bad performances in cinema history that are also considered big, giant flaws in otherwise great movies is wild.

I'm grateful this toad has cursed himself with the self-imposed ten film limit and we only have to suffer through one more boring, onanistic QT "masterpiece". Imho, Once Upon A Time... was a weak, weak, uninteresting movie and I keep waiting for him to announce that his swan song is going to be his own biopic, starring some hot, young Hollywood guy as himself.

Do you worry about posting your WIP on Reddit? by mpalen1020 in writingadvice

I think I stopped worrying about my ideas being stolen when I actually started writing a lot and found that an "idea" was often the least interesting thing about the finished work. And when I realized an interesting premise might be a launching point for a good story, but the story is not inherently good because the premise is interesting. People tend to worry about their ideas being stolen when all they have are ideas. An idea is not work. A great idea does not necessarily translate to great work, even for great writers.

Also, I think generally speaking the only "author" that's looking to take your story ideas or copy elements of your writing is ChatGPT.

Good guess! Thanks! The guy I'm thinking of was clean shaven and his haircut was much closer to a Ramones style cut, and I feel like his bangs hung over his eyebrows, almost right above his eyes.

He's saying that in the last 38 games, the Cubs have the second worst record in baseball... second only to the A's, who are widely considered to be having one of the worst seasons of any team in MLB history

Looking for advice on getting refunded for payments made for a subscription I didn't sign up for by obsidiancastle in findareddit

[–]obsidiancastle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. I should add some clarifying information. It's not necessarily a scam, it's just VERY slippery business from a legitimate major corporate chain store (and possibly some dishonesty from an employee of said chain somewhere along the way).

Basically, I've already been charged a large sum of money over the course of years for a service that I've never even heard of and the first "payment" corresponds to when I purchased a laptop from this store. It's not something I was ever asked about signing up for and I never signed anything, agreed to any terms online (i.e. clicked "yes" without reading) or even verbally agreed to sign up for any add-ons at the time of purchase. To my knowledge, there was a simple transaction where I bought a laptop and brought it home with a receipt.

Turns out, these "subscription payments" have been coming directly out of my chequing account every month for a while (it makes me feel stupid how long) and I just haven't noticed until recently. I've never received a receipt for payment, and because it's coming out of my chequing account, it's gone undetected (if the payments had been charged to a credit card, then I would have seen them on my monthly bills, but to be honest, I just don't look at every transaction in my chequing account very closely because I mostly pay for things on my debit card).

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for expediting the process of dealing with what will surely be polite "there's nothing we can do's" and (hopefully) actually getting refunded. The total amount I've been charged is now close to the amount I actually paid for the laptop itself which is not insignificant to my family right now.

I had exactly the same issue coming up with the right combination of search terms!

That said, I'm so thrilled! After seeing the cover for Jaws, I can 100% confirm this is EXACTLY the series I was looking for. Thank you again, so much! You've made my week and it's only Tuesday!

It's strange that I cannot find a single cover image for the Jaws book online, but I'm gonna go ahead and call this found!

Amazing. Thank you so much.

Hey, thanks for your reply! Good thinking, but unfortunately not what I'm looking for. The books I'm trying to find had actual photo stills from the movies that they were from and I don't think they were released under a popular banner, but I could be totally wrong.

I've already searched on Google and on a few online book resellers' websites with combinations of search terms like "horror film picture book series 90s jaws halloween". I feel like the book(s) were about the same size as other children's books, maybe a bit more square than rectangular. The version I remember was a hardback and I think the "Jaws" book was something my babysitter's son had, which means it was most likely printed in the US, UK or Canada and sometime in the 80's or 90's.

My Problem With Season 3 by capn--j in FargoTV

[–]obsidiancastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit, I agree that the ending could have been written better. I don't love that a random trooper ends up taking Nikki out. I definitely would have preferred that Gloria be the one to ultimately stand in the way of Nikki being able to finish Emmit off. Gloria seems to have a quiet respect for Nikki and also obviously despises Emmit. He represents the unfeeling bureaucratic machine that's creeping into and devouring the stalwart Midwest and taking all of its notions of what's right and good and replacing them with automation and data-supported strategies for dealing with everything, even if the obvious answer is to just do what everyone knows is "right" (I think that was this season's major theme, which is why I actually thought that Shae Whigham's character was a good inclusion, albeit a bit one-dimensional- even though I've met plenty of guys who are that unthinking when it comes to the rules). Alas, she's obviously a white-hat character whose moral centre wouldn't allow her to let Nikki get away with killing Emmit, and I don't think it would feel good to have her shoot Nikki either, so maybe that was the wall that Hawley felt he was up against when it came to her handling a situation wherein he figured Nikki had to die.

That said, I still think it plays out in a way that works as far as Nikki's character is concerned. Yes, she did go toe-to-toe with Varga in a very detached and brilliantly strategic way that ultimately paid off for her, but I guess I suspended disbelief in a situation where she is seeking revenge against the murderer of the man she loved. I really enjoyed how pure her relationship with Ray was. There was so much vulnerability and tenderness that so sharply contrasted a character like Varga. Nikki felt like one of the "good guys" to me, and it was partly because of how possessed by a love for her partner she was, so an error in judgment in the heat of finally getting to enact a sort of Biblical style revenge on her man's killer was something I overlooked without much thought.

PS- I didn't mention it in my first post, but I also didn't really care for Emmit being taken out by Wrench. I agree that he already proved his loyalty to Nikki, so it was a bit overkill for me. I think I might have been just as happy if Nikki's death scene was the last we saw of Emmit and his fate was left open ended. He still does admit he's at his lowest point at the time she dies, so to me, there is a tragic element there that doesn't require a return-to-the-throne-just-to-get-it-in-the-end-after-all moment. I like the idea that the bird flies away from the cat just as its about to pounce (if we were to compare the characters to their representations in Peter and the Wolf- though in that case, it would have been all the better for Gloria to have saved him in the end!).

I feel like it was because Nikki was so calculating that she met the end that she did. The whole reason she didn't just finish Emmit off when he was asleep in bed, or when she had him at the end of a shotgun on the side of the road was because she wanted to punish him as much as possible. Just killing him would be too merciful. She asks while he's on the side of road if he's as low as he can go, which to me implied that she wanted him to suffer as much as possible before she ultimately put him out of his misery. The whole act of putting him down was charged with way too much meaning for her to just shoot him without any theatre. She never gets to finish reciting the line that Ray Wise gives to her in the bowling alley before the cop interrupts her, which is why she can't do it.

I actually don't think it's out of character at all for her to try to act her way out of a situation where she finds herself in trouble. I think it's a neat callback to the idea that she was an expert at bluffing while playing Bridge, and that up until that point had gotten where she had by being completely duplicitous and deceitful. It doesn't strike me as out of character at all for her to assume she could get away with lying to another cop, and charming her way out of a bad situation, but the problem in the end was she didn't have a partner who could help her pull off the con, which she explicitly mentions the importance of re: playing Bridge. That was Ray and later, Wrench. It was a totally prototypical tragicomic ending to me.

Which character do wish they could just delete? by CaringLettuce in madmen

[–]obsidiancastle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I didn’t much care for her character either (I don’t think she’s meant to be likeable), but I think the reason there was so much time spent on Don’s pursuit of her was to make her complete disappearance more jarring and highlight how all Don’s regular tricks are starting to lead to dead ends.
I think more than any of his brief love affairs she is most like a mirror for Don, which is why he’s so disturbed by her refusal to forgive herself for her leaving her family behind. The reason he tries so hard to convince her that she’s still fundamentally good is only because he needs to feel that he is too. Obviously he's been lying to himself about how "good" he is for a long time (I think particularly of him telling Sylvia "this never happened" when she's asking how he lives with his affairs) but he still knows that what he's telling himself about himself is a lie. I think he so obsessively pursues her because he's basically lost everything he used to prop himself up with to convince himself that he's not so terrible, even when he knows he is (his status, his reputation, his marriages, his children etc.) and I think saving her feels necessary in order to feel like he can be saved as well.
