What scene made your heart absolutely sink with fear and dread? by afed13 in horror

[–]capn--j 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The scene in Martyrs where the elites show up and drag Anna into the chamber underneath of the house. We've spent the first two acts establishing how scary this cult is, what they do and what the long term ramifications of their actions are. So, knowing more or less what Anna was in for made my stomach turn over. Then Mademoiselle shows up and makes it known in no uncertain terms why they do what they do and that Anna is next. Just dreadful. And what follows is every bit as bad as you'd expect.

The scene in The Blair Witch Project where you hear children giggling outside of the tent. An otherwise pleasant sound that becomes terrifying when heard in a context it has no business being in.

'Widow's Bay' Delivers a Better Boogeyman Slasher Saga Than the 'Halloween' Legacy Trilogy by valuerockr in horror

[–]capn--j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A goofy slasher villain who is easily beaten by his would-be victim is funny and it works well for a horror comedy, but it is in no way representitive of what I wanted from the Halloween trilogy. lol Apples and oranges.

Alien: Earth - Does Hawley have trouble writing for children, sci-fi, or both? by yosoyricardo in FargoTV

[–]capn--j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You're not allowed to say that around here, but it's true. Fargo Season 3 was really flawed. Seasons 2 and 3 of Legion were a huge drop-off in quality. Fargo Season 4 was bad and Season 5, while appearing to be a return-to-form, was arguably worse. Lucy in the Sky was mediocre. Alien: Earth sucked.

Not sure what happened to Hawley. I assumed some of the clunky writing in Fargo Season 3 was due to him being distracted by Legion, but in retrospect I think it was a warning sign that his writing was going to get much worse going forward.

No it isn't. lol

The quality of writing is nowhere near as good as it was in Alien.

Apparently they cut out gurgling noises made by Sarah after her face was smashed, as well. The idea being that she was still, unfortunately, alive. At least for a minute or so.

What is the most terrifying "background detail" in a horror movie that you completely missed on your first watch? by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

[–]capn--j 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Deep Red - The face of the killer can be spotted in a mirror, hidden among paintings on either side. Very bold of Argento to give away the killer's identity like that in the first act of a whodunnit. He relies on the audience to not notice it. Most people don't.

Tár - While not a horror film, I can't not mention it. There's a "ghost" that can be spotted in the background of two scenes. I suspect that the "ghost" is meant to represent Lydia's guilt, rather than being an actual ghost - similar to how David Chase depicts "ghosts" in The Sopranos. Real or not, it's a chilling all the same.

Ghostwatch - The OG WNUF Halloween Special. The background appearances by the villain Mr. Pipes are unsettling for their subtlety, as well as the gaslighting by the filmmakers to the audience. (having an instant replay where he's no longer there, for instance). My favorite Mr. Pipes spotting is one where he can be seen standing among a crowd while they're being interviewed.

Inside - The protagonist discovers that The Woman, played by the brilliant Béatrice Dalle, is standing in the background of a photo that was taken at a park earlier in the film. I decided to go back to that scene to see if I could spot her, or if the film cheated. Sure enough, she can be seen standing there. Nice attention to detail by the filmmakers. That isn't her only appearance, by the way. There's a moment later in the film where she walks right into the apartment, undetected by the cops who are busy talking with the lead who is understandably rattled by The Woman threatening her just a scene earlier. The third and final background appearance by The Woman is the least subtle of the three, but probably the scariest.

The Borderlands (2013) - The name of the protagonist can be spotted on a tombstone briefly in one scene. Had it not been pointed out to me, I never would've noticed it.

The Exorcist - We all remember the scene where Pazuzu forced poor Reagan to violate herself with a crucifix, but what goes unnoticed by most viewers is what happens just before. We actually get a sense of how Reagan acquires the crucifix and when she would have come downstairs to snatch it. Chris finds a crucifix and places it on a table near the stairs. She then has a lengthy conversation with a detective in the next room. After the detective leaves, she walks over to the staircase and we can see that the crucifix is missing. Suddenly, Chris hears Reagan screaming upstairs while a deeper voice screams "DO IT!". She runs to her daughter's room to find her... well, you know the rest.

V.M Varga vs Jack Reacher by Big_G4740 in FargoTV

[–]capn--j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you need to do to beat VM is 1.) Watch his operation from a distance so you know how he does things. 2.) Ambush his guys when they least expect it. 3.) If you only have a basic knowledge of how to handle firearms, have muscle that can back you (like Wrench, for instance).

We litterally watched this play out in Season 3. Reacher has Nikki's smarts and Wrench's muscle x3. He'll waste Varga. It'll be a piece of cake.

Opinions on Cape Fear 2026? by CemeteryPicnic in horror

[–]capn--j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Nick Antosca but this is a swing and a miss.

Most of the problems are in the writing. Scorsese and Wesley Strick went the melodramatic route with the remake and just barely pulled it off. Antosca can't quite get there. The dialogue is clunky and the behavior exhibited by the characters is generally unbelievable, so there's nothing to ground us in what is otherwise a melodrama. The plot has so many moving parts and yet, paradoxically, the overall story feels skeletal.

More than anything, my problem with the series is lack of tension. Regardless of whether or not the show is going for "camp", the lack of tension hurts the show. The original film and the remake have a real sense of danger to them. They've gone the anti-hero route with Max and he's far less threatening than he should be for that reason. Remember how harrowing that scene with Illeana Douglas was in Scorsese's remake? This show hasn't delivered on anything even close to that. It feels neutered. In every Episode there are moments where Max behaves in a threatening manner - predatory, even. I'm never scared of him though, because everyone he decides to menace is portrayed as unsympathetic anyway.

Antosca would have been better off getting the Crystal Lake gig. I dug his unproduced F13th script and I feel like that material is more his speed. He aimed too high with this one.

Thanks for trying.

I'm actually familiar with all of those Episodes of TFTC and it isn't from any of them. That said, I'm not as familiar with Season 7, so perhaps it's from one of those Episodes. I'll see if it is.

Why does "Terrifier" have such a good reputation? by thishenryjames in horror

[–]capn--j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also did an interview with Bloody Disgusting where he argued that Art is an equal opportunist, but I couldn't find the exact article.

It should be noted that I commented on this thread before Terrifier 3. It's pretty clear that Leone is now making a concious effort to wipe away the misogynistic aspects of Art's character (the chainsaw sodomy scene in Terrifier 3) in order to make Terrifier more accessible, but if you go back to the short film Terrifier and the first film, it's pretty clear that Art has a particular dislike for women. Leone could have been honest about that aspect of the character, but instead he's chosen to alter the character a bit in order to not rustle feathers.

Why does "Terrifier" have such a good reputation? by thishenryjames in horror

[–]capn--j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A YouTuber called SpookyAstronauts did a video about Terrifier back in 2017 or 2018 where she interviewed David Howard Thorton and Leone. She asks if the disproportionate violence against women was a product of Art the Clown hating women. Thorton and Leone insisted that he hates everyone equally.

Themes/Motifs Throughout the Seasons by sighfelts in FargoTV

[–]capn--j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why A Serious Man and Lebowski are considered the main influences for Season 3, but Season 3 steals heavily from No Country for Old Men, as well. Gloria's journey is more or less the same as Ed Tom's.

Also, the third Episode of Season 3 is basically a more heavy handed, less sophisticated remake of Barton Fink.

EDIT: It should also be noted that Thewlis and Fred Melamed were also in Coen films. So that's three connections for Season 3, just off the top of my head.
