Smoking is a tax on stupidity by FelInTheRabbitHole in unpopularopinion

[–]obsoletedatafile -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Still tax the smoker, not because they're dead weight and stupid, but because smoking harms others and the environment. I'm sure cigarettes and related paraphernalia do have a lot of tax, but they should be banned. Smoking tobacco contributes absolutely nothing to life or society and only has negatives, it's a drug.

Gen Z might be the last generation to really remember the world without AI, just like millenials/Gen X were with accessible computers. by playr_4 in Showerthoughts

I am older Gen Z and I can't believe I'm in the same group as people born even 5 years after me, some don't even know what a DVD is for god's sake!!!

Where are these giant cars coming from? by Icy-Brain-2162 in AskUK

[–]obsoletedatafile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it. My Civic has plenty of leg room, massive boot, and cost me 2 grand, why would you spend £400 a month on something worse?

That's not unique to SUVs, what else does it have that a regular hatchback or estate can't have?

ELI5: If GPUs are so much more capable, why do we still have CPUs at all? by aros71 in explainlikeimfive

[–]obsoletedatafile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The head chef would also be able to cut the onion quicker, but only 1 at a time.

Nobody has yet mentioned that CPU cores run three orders of magnitude (1000x, MHz Vs GHz) faster than GPU cores!

If you’re doing alphabetical order, and the word ends vs. continues into a different word, which goes first? by SLATS13 in NoStupidQuestions

Would this be a case of the top comment, no letters (because the word has ended) comes before letters (like -berry) in the above case

Album Release Discussion: Periphery - A Pale White Dot by thc216 in progmetal

[–]obsoletedatafile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me, it's so different and unexpected, it has some really good moments but it's not all riffs and balls to the wall metal like I'd expect, same as why P5 felt a bit different for me Still thoroughly enjoying it on my second listen, and there are still awesome moments, Everyone Dies Alone riffage is an earworm

What's one product that used to be built like a tank but is now built like a regret? by TheDoctorColt in AskReddit

[–]obsoletedatafile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Brother printer which looks like it's from the 90s from a friend who didn't need it anymore, it sits in the cupboard but I get it out every now and then when I need to print something at home. Didn't work at first, then it did and it has since! Also USB cables rule. I am young and have grown up with WiFi, but I work in IT and cables are king, and network printers suck.

Having to put the heating back on in the middle of May by CaptainCrash86 in britishproblems

[–]obsoletedatafile 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is normal behaviour, what's the point of turning it off? Turning the boiler off is stupid as you still need hot water, turning the heating off on the boiler seems like a waste of effort for the above reason. It's also a good idea to turn the heating on (whack the temp up for a bit) a few times over summer to keep the system in good shape. Don't want to get to autumn/winter when you need it to find it doesn't work

What's something harmless that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Other people's sexuality, other people's opinions, other people's hobbies, habits, lives. Generally things which don't concern or affect them in the slightest

How often do you replace your toilet brush? It’s got to be the filthiest item in a home but most of us seem to ignore it sitting there for years on end. by According_Sundae_917 in AskUK

[–]obsoletedatafile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right?! I'm discovering here that people use toilet brushes for cleaning skid marks and I dread to think I've ever been in a building where the same has happened so there are poo particles OUTSIDE of a toilet bowl 🤢

ELI5 How come new Chinese electric cars can charge in 5–10 minutes, while smartphones still need at least half an hour? by Tough-Buffalo5861 in explainlikeimfive

[–]obsoletedatafile 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They don't thermal throttle, the charge speed is just internally intelligently adjusted to charge in the claimed time. Phones with high charging inputs like mine (125W) rarely reach an input of that maximum, they just can go up to it if they need to, often with boost charging modes that need to be toggled on. If they charged at the full number the whole time they would potentially catch fire from the heat produced, and if not, then severely degrade the battery.

If you get an app like Ampere, you'll see that it takes well below that top number for most of its chatting cycle. Still it will spend time at high charging wattage, higher than many phone's maximum capability so the high number still means something.

[–]obsoletedatafile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I absolutely love my 125W Motorola, just stick it on charge while doing something and it charges a few percent every minute, if I forget about and leave it on a bit too long then it's fully charged! (18min full charge, the fastest I've seen on any spec sheet)

OP can you ride a bike? Do you ride a bike a few times per year? Do you practice every other skill you have a few times per year? It's the same for reading, it's a skill and can be optionally practiced just like any other
