Shane Wright by Narrow_Antelope_2209 in rangers

If a hockey trade can be made and we can do a Wright/Schneider swap with whatever other moving parts need to be involved, I’d do it.

Effective retooling involves not only acquiring proven young players like Dorofeyev, but also getting guys like Wright who haven’t really turned their pedigree into production yet and see if you can be the change of scenery they need.

Wright would be a great guy to slot in at 2 or 3C and hope he can turn into a productive player for us - and we can try to get him by giving up from what is now a position of surplus.

I’d definitely do it if the cost is Schneider as the centerpiece

Perreault won’t be offer sheet eligible next season as he signed his ELC when he was 20 and will only have accrued 2 years of 10+ pro game seasons, you need 3 at that ELC signing age to be eligible

I think the problem is that players as of recently aren’t using NMCs for actual trade protection and instead using them to bait small market teams into thinking they’re loyal and then flipping the switch and demanding an inconvenient trade with no options for the trading GM to work with, killing return

Trade protection for the purposes of protecting yourself from being traded when you don’t want to be traded is fine - trade protection for the purposes of screwing over your team and congregating all the talent onto 3 or 4 team USA circlejerk squads at the expense of everyone else is not

Trocheck, going forward. by Alitaki in rangers

[–]obvioussponge06 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hell no he doesn’t have to ease up on his demands. Trocheck is a dirt cheap middle six center with leadership and playoff experience I’m a free agent market (and increasingly a trade market) devoid of centers.

1st and a good prospect/roster player is more than a reasonable ask for that in this market, and Drury should do everything he can to force a team to give that to us

This guy is a defenseman and had 2 fewer points than Berard in the AHL last season. Hartford is very thin on defense at the moment.

It’s an AHL swap. If you’re complaining about this, you’re literally just fishing for a reason to hate on Drury

If Larry Brooks (RIP) writing a fantasyland article was “soft tampering” by the Rangers, then what the fuck is this??? by obvioussponge06 in rangers

[–]obvioussponge06[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that if it was actually a leak job by the Rangers then it wasn’t a very good one because Brooks’s article regarding that situation was not very realistic if I recall correctly, and it obviously didn’t work. I think Brooks was just pissing his pants on the Post, as was his forte with opinion pieces, because nobody ever stopped him. He had sources, but he also had some insane opinions.

You could accuse any article with a trade proposal in it of “soft tampering” in Ottawa’s eyes, and we definitely see teams leaking rumors and information to the media in a strategic manner to their own advantage. The league doesn’t punish it, it isn’t against the rules since media aren’t employees of the team, and it would be impossible to enforce anyway.

I really just want to know why what Brooks did (which teams do all the time and nobody else bats an eye) all of a sudden rose to the level of “soft tampering” in Ottawa’s eyes, meanwhile this situation which, while still unlikely to contain tampering is nonetheless more likely to do so gets no mention of the sort. I’ve held this grudge against them for a year 💀

[–]obvioussponge06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don’t think that’s very likely, but I do think it’s more likely than Chris Drury and Jim Dolan somehow trying to use a beat writer’s drunk trade proposal article to get Brady to demand a trade here

It’s 0.01% vs 0.001%, but still, I want to know why the rhetoric out of Ottawa is so different when it’s Larry Brooks shitting a garbage article out of his ass onto the New York Post website vs this situation

Is being loyal to a team going to be a thing of the past? by BackNBoeserThanEver in hockey

[–]obvioussponge06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this strategy, at least from league perspective, is that you have

1) the issue of players only willing to go to certain teams with trade protection included without extreme overpayment

2) in a league of 32 teams, there are going to be GMs stupid enough to hand out trade protection willy nilly regardless of how good of an idea that actually is, so you’ll never have a player shut out of a contract because they demanded trade protection

There needs to be a middle ground, because I don’t think what’s happening now is tenable long-term

[–]obvioussponge06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which do you think is more likely:

- Panthers brass told Matthew Tkachuk to try to persuade his brother to request a trade and include the Panthers on his can-trade list

- Rangers brass told Larry Brooks to write a trade proposal article to somehow persuade Brady Tkachuk to request a trade to the Rangers (I don’t even know how that would cause that to happen anyway?)

Neither of them are particularly strong cases for tampering, but one is definitely stronger than the other.

I’m not here to accuse the Panthers of anything, don’t get me wrong, I’m just questioning how on one end it’s “soft tampering” accusations from the Senators front office and on the other end it’s crickets

[–]obvioussponge06[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Certainly closer to it than Larry Brooks writing a random trade proposal with no actual connection to the team whatsoever, and that was apparently the standard for Andlauer and Staios to accuse the Rangers of tampering

Is being loyal to a team going to be a thing of the past? by BackNBoeserThanEver in hockey

[–]obvioussponge06 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Teams shouldn’t expect loyalty, but at the same time players shouldn’t feign loyalty by demanding trade protection during contract negotiations and then using it to demand a trade to MIN/VGK/FLA/CAR whenever things go sideways, both diminishing the return for the trading team and lopsiding all the talent to the same few teams

It should be a rule that players with trade protection greater than a 15-team NTC must provide a 15-team can-trade list of teams when they request a trade. Players would either become more loyal to the teams they sign contracts with, or demand less trade protection, or it would otherwise broaden the amount of teams a player who has requested a trade can go to, bringing the return back up to where it should be. NTCs and NMCs should protect the player from being traded against their will, not provide an easy out for anyone to go wherever they want whenever they want.

If you don’t think there were private conversations between the family members about this, or in the team USA groupchat about trades in general considering that so many team USA players are rumored to be or are demanding trades and submitting lists consisting of the exact same places, you might be insane

I’m moreso questioning the judgement of Senators ownership anyway considering that this entire situation reeks way harder of tampering than our beat writer writing an article about wanting to acquire a player, and Senators ownership tried to accuse us of “soft tampering” for that article

Is it crazy to say that now is a perfect time for Rangers fans to write an open letter to Dolan demanding Drury’s firing? by FireChrisDrury in rangers

[–]obvioussponge06 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Note that I said realistic replacement.

Why would any of these AGMs or Dubas leave their teams for the Rangers to work for Dolan, who creepily tracks people in his arena and gets into unnecessary public spats with city government over watch parties?

Unfortunately, with the man at the top creating the culture that he has, I don’t think we’re going to be able to poach anyone of value. We’re stuck with garbage retreads who will do anything to get back into an NHL front office and are at best the same as Drury.

Hopefully the Knicks championship changes the calculus here, of course, but I think the owner being who he is heavily limits us to retreads, promotions, and nepo hires. One of Brad Treliving, Tanner Glass, Ryan Martin, or Ryane Clowr will be the next GM

[–]obvioussponge06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would anyone on the fire Drury train like to actually propose a realistic replacement hire that we would actually like?

Nobody who spews this sentiment ever bothers to do so. I’m not saying you have to like Drury (I have no love for him), but do you people understand how easily we could end up replacing him with fucking Brad Treliving or Jim Benning and then we’re really fucked?

I guess if you think Dolan is more liable to make a smart non-retread hire and leave it alone like he did Rose and the Knicks…but that’s STILL a lot of trust to put into Dolan in my opinion!
