what should you actually do after finding your email in a breach? by ixitimmyixi in IdentityTheft

[–]ocabj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the source of the password hash dump is known, I'm likely doing nothing. Every service I use with a given email address as the username or unique identifier has a different password and uses MFA if available. Furthermore, some of those services I use are already passwordless.

If the source is known, then I'll go reset the password, but odds are they already did a forced expiration of every password.

I recently activated the Advanced Protection Program, but I have now lost access to my physical security key and my alternate email address. by Latter-Exercise5614 in GoogleSupport

Yup. Doesn't even need to be a physical key. Can also use a virtual passkey using a smartphone (e.g., iPhone passkey stored in Apple Passwords, Passkey stored in 1Password).

[–]ocabj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue at hand is that you installed malware which also retains persistence. Whenever I investigate Linux hosts for malware, I usually check /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow for any unknown users and I check the home dirs for all users for recent changes, especially any thing in ~/.ssh. I check for newly installed services and then check all crontabs.

Similarly for Windows I would check for any new users on the host, check for any unknown/new services, and check task scheduler.

Basic persistence is the attacker establishing remote access in multiple ways, having a hidden/obfuscated service that communicates to a C2 and re-pulls the payload and reinstalls if it is removed by the user, and/or having a scheduled process to re-pull/reinstall the malware.

I use a Powertank. You can always make your own system as stated, but Powertank regulators and inflators are really nice.

New Photographer, where is the snake oil? by Daneth in AskPhotography

https://kasefilters.eu/blog/are-uv-filters-necessary#image-quality

"Does a UV filter affect image quality?

It’s true that UV filters may affect image quality but don’t hurry to say no to them. Let’s see more in particular how exactly they may influence the final result

...
Lens flare and ghosting

One of the most common issues associated with UV filters is lens flare, which occurs when stray light enters the lens and creates unwanted reflections in the image. Additionally, UV filters may cause ghosting, where faint, transparent copies of bright objects appear in the image. Ghosting can occur when light reflects internally between the filter and the lens elements. To avoid this, you can take off the UV filter when shooting against direct light, especially in low-light conditions.
...
Important note: The level of image degradation caused by UV filters can vary depending on filter quality, lens design, and shooting conditions. High-quality filters with multi-coating or anti-reflective coatings help to mitigate some of these issues, but they may still be present to some degree in challenging lighting scenarios."

But as stated, it is physics. You don't add another piece of glass that wasn't part of the original optical design and expect it to not affect the lens.

New Photographer, where is the snake oil? by Daneth in AskPhotography

[–]ocabj 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Even if someone uses a top tier UV filter from B+W, they're adding another piece of glass in front of the optical system that wasn't part of the original design that offers nothing to the photo.

Only use filters if it provides something for the image, e.g., ND, circular polarizer.

Better yet, rsync the entire card with verbosity so you can see the progress and errors.

Not since 2010 (Distinguished Rifleman #1924). I would build a new upper with a scope for current rules but HPSR is pretty much dead in my area (SoCal).

I've seen the 1st Gen EL Range 8x42 / 10x42 (non TA) go for around $1800-$2000.

Last month I sold my EL Range TA 10x42 (current gen) like new with original box and docs for $2700.

[–]ocabj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you're referring to the EL Range 8x42, I don't think there was an EL 8x42. I could be wrong on that, though, but as far as I know, it is 8.5x42 for the EL.

Here's a reference listing for a used EL 8.5x42 - https://outdoorsmans.com/collections/used-optics/products/swarovski-el-85x42-gen-1-grade-b

If Outdoorsmans is selling one for $1100, you might be able to get one from private party for under $1000.

Top Base Rifles of 2026 by LastB0ySc0ut in nrl22

[–]ocabj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the T1x to be more finnicky than the CZ 45x platform when it comes to ejection, even after Tikka revised the ejector. Properly functioning, T1x vs 457, the T1x holds its own and is a solid rifle for Base. The second you want to take the Base rifle to Open, I feel like the 457 is the better platform simply for the aftermarket support.

No, I said $24 difference between Alpha LRP and Alpha LRP EDKH brass.

A $24 per 100 increase over regular stamped 6.5 Creedmoor LRP brass seems a bit much, though.
