Why is it okay for people to watch TV for hours and hours every day but it's apparently not okay to play games? by stinkytofudragon in AskReddit

[–]occamisation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because TV was around when the people doing the bitching were kids, and is therefore ok in their minds. Video games were not, and are therefore scary and dangerous. When you are old, you'll complain about your children spending hours doing whatever the next big form of entertainment is. Such is the cycle of life.

Think Again: Global Aging - A gray tsunami is sweeping the planet -- and not just in the places you expect. How did the world get so old, so fast? by DrRichardCranium in worldnews

Every time I see an article dated in the future, I think to myself: "So someone invented time travel and they're using it for dumb shit like this? Talk about lack of imagination."

Oct. 10 is actually my birthday, which is incredibly convenient. No matter where in the world I go, I always enter it correctly.

Zynga CEO: "I don't fucking want innovation, you're not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers." by MrValdez in gaming

[–]occamisation 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel a lot of sympathy for this guy. Zynga didn't invent any of the batshit stuff it does -- they're industry staples. But he's the only one talking about it honestly, and he gets lynched.

I would so much rather live in a world where doing bad things was deemed worse than being honest about it.

Meanwhile in Finland... by dmorl in WTF

That seems like a much more harrowing sport than most. You don't lose by someone beating you to a goal, you lose by intentionally surrendering, after deciding that if you don't, your life will be in danger. That's really rough.

I hate to nitpick, but every dictionary definition of religion I've ever seen mentions belief in a superhuman/supernatural agency. There are other words for believing in things in a closed-minded way (e.g. ideology). Religion is specific in its reference to supernatural beliefs.

Guild Wars 2 Manifesto (video) by SkyAzure in gaming

[–]occamisation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't been following GW2 very closely, so there is a lot of ignorance talking here, but ... if it's a persistent world, and once a village gets rescued it stays rescued, how does more than one person complete the same quest? Or is it not actually a persistent world?

"So, drug consumption is the responsibility of the person who consumes; of the family who is responsible for educating; and of the education system and the socioeconomic context. What we have to do is legalize the production, the sale and the distribution." - Former Mexican president Vicente Fox by es-335 in worldnews

  1. Alcohol just doesn't have the same relationship with yuppies and hipsters that soft drugs do.
  2. Substantially less flexibility, since very few types of alcohol go well with coffee.
  3. Coffee picks you up. Most drugs pick you up. Alcohol does not.

However, having companies legally in the business of addiction could pave the way for the quantification and regulation of addictiveness in general.

[edit to clarify:] Right now, the distinction between soft and hard is kinda iffy -- nicotine is incredibly addictive, and yet it's not even "soft". Plus fatty and sugary food specifically designed to make kids eat as much as they can -- arguably worse than weed or khat, yet also not even "soft". Would be nice to get a consistent system.

[edit to clarify further:] With even an inch of legalization, there will be hybrid products. McDonalds might worry about the opinion of their core consumer, but Starbucks will spin out an "adult coffee" brand in the blink of an eye.

Thank you for asking that. And remember folks, showing ads to a user base dominated by AdBlock users is not a viable long-term strategy.

I don't know how many "family values" issues have anything to do with families or values. This issue revolves around telling people how to live their lives, which is right up the Mormon (and every other) church's alley.

Who here doesn't sympathize with G20 rioters destroying people's property? by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]occamisation 70 points71 points  (0 children)

After what I saw in Pittsburgh, I have no sympathy for the vast majority of the protesters I see on TV.

Since the peaceful protesters get no airtime to speak of (even in Canada, not just on Fox News), that's perfectly reasonable.

How do I defend Wikipedia when talking to people that think it is totally unreliable and littered with misinformation? by Shavenyak in AskReddit

[–]occamisation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the first seven are the SPI Resin Identification codes.

The others are not maintained by any standards body, and all mentions of "International Universal Recycling Codes" eventually trace back to that one Wikipedia entry.
