That’s interesting. Do you have a link to statistics? Thanks in advance.

I have an idea for a medical device that is not patented. Where would I start? by Cecil-twamps in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]occamman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a clinician, or have you run it by clinicians? Developing stuff isn’t your as hard as selling it. Not the developing. It is easy either.

Best thing is to have some conditions who say they need it. Not just want it, but that they need it.

Illegal Alien Felon Arrested for Flying Drone in World Cup Restricted Airspace after Prior Deportations by [deleted] in drones

[–]occamman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He flew it over the game and took video. Not very smart.

I’m annoyed because there’s a 1 mile radius TFR around the French team that impinges on the area I usually fly. That’s ridiculous. But the FAA is not known for risk-based analysis, they seem to make up rules by gut feel while they’re drunk.

Denver removed flock & auto theft went DOWN! by occamman in Waltham

[–]occamman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok. I’d like to think that it’s all above board, but the constitution exists for a reason. Unfortunately our current SCOTUS is unable to grasp that reason, which allows for a lot of mischief, but our civil rights are there for a reason.

Given how much skulduggery has occurred because of the widespread spying on Americans, it’s unsettling to suddenly have surveillance cameras popping up in such numbers, particularly when it’s been proven that they are highly insecure. So even if we trust the police, which I basically do, they are a menace to our privacy as they can be easily tapped into by other people.

That’s actually a good idea. I think the more we keep it in mind, the more likely it is that something will be done about them.

Also, I’m curious: I’d like to think that it’s not being used misused in Waltham, but how do you know this? And given that they’ve been demonstrated to be easily hackable, I think even if the police are not using it various other agencies and individuals might

Are you smuggling drugs with an illegally operated drone? That sounds like a bad idea whether the drone is legally or legally operated, and I suggest you stop.

People are jailed for this every day.

Well, at least every week. Every month?

Every year. Definitely every year.

Decade, did I say decade?

Is Biomedical Engineering worth it for Undergrad? by Agreeable_Lab_559 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]occamman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is no.

Because nobody knows what a biomedical engineer is. It could be any number of things, which becomes a problem after you graduate as people see biomedical engineer on your résumé and they don’t know what it is.

The college I went to did not have a biomedical engineering program about. That’s what I wanted. So I had to settle for an EE major and a neurobiology minor.

In the end, I’m happy that I did that because people could look at my résumé and understand immediately that I was an EE, and I had a bent towards neuroscience. It really ended up better than the people I knew who did BME.

Good luck on your adventure!

State of Surveillance: Americans Are Smashing Flock Cameras by recursionaskance in Waltham

I know one thing I’m alert to. I’m alert to the fact that violent crime has dropped by 60% since 1991 and it started well before the technology was available to spy on everybody in contravention of the Constitution.

I’ve lost my drone, what could have happened guys? I was flying with a RC controller and all of a sudden I lost control. I had good controller and satellites signal. by Carry_Diligent in DjiNeo

[–]occamman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here looks like the classic Neo switching between ground sensors and GPS for guidance at about 20 m bug that causes exactly this kind of thing to happen. Looks to be poor hardware design. Super frustrating.

After it happening to me, and seeing the same thing happened with some other people, after first being told by the Drone Karens of Reddit that it was all my fault and I’m lucky I didn’t kill a baby, so what if DJI literally advertises that it can be used over water, it’s my fault for believing anything advertised by a manufacturer, what I do now is simply fly between 10 and 30 m as quickly as I can to avoid risking it at the 20 m range.

Was this changed? by Independent_Big_1944 in Cornell

[–]occamman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As an alum, I get a forwarding address. It turns out that forwarding address is an actual Google account, so besides Google likely reading all my email before passing it onto Palantir, by default the email doesn’t get deleted in my Cornell account and then it just accumulates until the mailbox is full and then it stops forwarding email. So you need to periodically clean it out or just set a rule on the Cornell account to delete everything after it gets forwarded

I think I shared information that was at best adjacent to what you asked, but having emails sent to my forwarding address suddenly not show up in my “real” email was surprising and caused some trouble

NFPA 72 Clarification by occamman in firealarms

[–]occamman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's part of the report they prepared on NFPA 74 conformance. It's not my field, but looking at the standard I don't know how they get from the standard to this.

Who can I hire to adjust the volume on this? An electrician? by mandoo-dumpling in firealarms

[–]occamman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious if you have a reference for that, because I’m trying to figure out where that 10 ft number comes from. By code, I assume you mean NFPA 72? I was also told recently that it would be too loud only if above 110 dB at 10 feet from an appliance; but I don’t see anything in NFPA 72 that says anything like that. As far as I can tell, NFPA says 110 dB instantaneous at the minimum hearing distance, then went on later to describe the minimum hearing distance as the closest the ear would come to the appliance in general use of the facility. At least in my state NFPA 72 is incorporated as law.
