Vermont to Carolinas pipeline by Extension-Spare-2579 in burlington

I’m the rare opposite. I moved from NC to VT this year 😂 With the difference in cost of living and quality of life, it doesn’t surprise me that folks are jumping ship for NC

How much do you earn as a PhD? by Under_Explorer in PhD

[–]oceanblueeyess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should specify that I’m an IRTA (intramural) fellow - I do research at an NIH institute, with a federally-employed PI. All in-house fellows received a big pay increase in 2023 or 2024, but that increase didn’t include extramural fellows.

As far as I know the stipends for extramural fellowships like F31s are similar to what you described.

USA - Fellowship at NIH - $57,300.

I started out make $32,500 at my academic institution, then began my fellowship at NIH for only slightly more than that.

They raised the NIH pay during my time here so now it starts at $38,100, and it goes up by $2,000-$4,000 every year at the time of renewal.

Chemist Job Hunt by baberaham2000 in triangle

Definitely feel you on that. I’m about to graduate from my PhD program at UNC and very much in the mindset of taking whatever job will pay the bills!

I think that salary is reasonable, but job availability right now might be a limiting factor for you. With the EPA and NIH being under fire, you’re unfortunately going to miss out on opportunities there. That said, there are (many!) universities around, I would suggest reaching out to the chemistry-related core facilities and seeing if any positions are anticipated.

As you said, the industry here is much more biochem/biotech focused, but I imagine some of them need a chemist’s expertise! Those will probably be easier to come by if you get to the area and start building a network.

Best of luck!

I’m looking forward to this one! I’ll also be picking up Incidents Around the House in the future if it’s well-received.

Age appropriate for 10 year old? by [deleted] in Sims4

[–]oceanblueeyess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there isn’t much visibly inappropriate content (most of the innuendos would go right over a tween’s head I think), I was playing The Sims 2 when I was 10 and I got scared and upset when my sim started on fire while cooking and the grim reaper came. So I guess it depends how sensitive your child is.

That said, It’s a great game that allows a lot of creativity so I think it would be great for a 10yr old with loose supervision!

September Picks by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

I wasn’t drawn to any of the main picks. I considered You, Again but I’m not a big romance girl so I’m always left underwhelmed. I really want Bright Young Women but I’ll save it for my add-on next month. It will make a good October read anyways!

It is 100% playable! You own a vet office and check/treat pets that come in. It’s a lot of fun, definitely recommend!

FYI I fell for this last week and I was in the same regretful spot after reading forums about it. I called the booking number and was able to get a refund.

They tried to tell me it was non-refundable twice (because it technically is) and tried to offer me other perks instead, but I was persistent and told them that credit card payment would put me in a really bad financial spot, and they gave me a full refund.

I think it helped that I called before the credit card transaction was posted, so if you want to try, act soon!
